ive only been a radio fan of styx, wheel in the sky does it for me. as far as sabbath i like most of it, use to play paranoid live, if i recalled they actually called the bar and told us to quit copying, no kidding. ronnie has a wonderful message board but its really quiet now. i really dont go to concerts no more with health issues, but id probably buy an mp3 or dvd but not another last supper, more music less talk. i also like when the girls show them selves. its all good fun.//

Blue Oyster Cult have at least three live albums. I saw the Some Enchanted Evening tour and a bunch of tours after that. The first Cult live album, On Your Feet or On Your Knees, was a fave of mine in my teen years. Some incredible playing on that, but the sound isnt great. Buck Dharma was quoted back then as saying, "we had more money a few years later thanks to a couple of big hits so we wanted to make a really good sounding live album to make up for the first one"

the last live album I heard from them was years later, Extraterrestial Live, I didnt like that anywhere near as much as the first two

I have the original live record. Bought it next to new way back, and it is on my radar to rip to digital. Interesting that there is a double disc release. That would be cool to hear, since that live album I own probably clocks in somewhere around 35 minutes.

Typical of many live albums from that time, brutally edited from the original length. Honestly I don't mind the touch ups in the studio, if the length and context of the entire concert remains intact.

Lots of albums fit this bill. Blue Oyster Cult's Some Enchanted Evening comes to mind immediately.

I was doing a cover band gig a couple of years ago maybe, and we closed a set with Paranoid. This drunk idiot walked up to me and wanted to impress me with his expert knowledge of all things music and he said, "dude, Ozzy wrote that song when he was only 19 years old, MAN!"

Heh.

He seemed crushed when he found out Ozzy wrote very little of their lyrics at all.

I wouldn't argue that. Iommi is still the creator of that sound, which for me, is why the transition to Dio didn't really bother me.

Something I didn't know for many years, is that it was Geezer who penned all lyrics.

Interesting that Black Sabbath was on the ropes before Ozzy left. Those last two albums (Never Say Die, Techical Ecstasy) were released to very little interest. I liked them, but for my money Dio in the mix brought them back from the brink. Heaven and Hell, and Mob Rules were great records.

Thanks for the link. Listened to both Pineda and Perry doing Faithfully and definitely nothing against Pineda but to me .... without Perry, its just not Journey.

Its always difficult to replace the lead singer of a successful band, especially if that singer has a rather distinctive vocal presentation. I think for Pineda [who has a terrific voice], taking on lead of the "new Journey" may prove to be a bit of an albatross around his neck.

Heck for all the success Brian Johnson has had as lead singer of AC/DC, to many he is still walking in the shadows of Bon Scott.

"Mad Shadows" was the second Mott The Hoople record - their self titled LP with that wonderful Escher cover being their first. "Brain Capers" = their fourth LP, also holds good in my stead from the Atlantic Record years. I was always glad for the success years - 1972 through 1976. I saw some great shows of theirs back then - that show with the marionettes at the Uris in 1974 stands out notable. I know Queen opened for Mott at that show and later on as well ... those were good days, my friends.

It was actually my first concert. Mott opened, so they were actually the first real arena band I ever saw. Then Styx, touring for Equinox, which was pretty good, and then the headliners were Kiss, touring their first Alive.

Helluva great concert and probably my favorite one, still, out of the hundreds I've seen and all the gigs I've worked, big and small. Watching ZZ Top, Heart and Cheap Trick from stage left are close seconds.

..is my new discovery of the day.

Plucked that one out of my stack of vinyl and ripped it. I learned that I did play it back in the day, because at least 3 songs were quite familiar. Other than that, I must say that this album is quite good.
Due to the familiar cut-out hole in the side, I would say that I bought it because it was a) somehow related to Mott the Hoople, and b) cheap in a cutout bin.
I used to cruise those bins religiously at the local woolworths, hell, .99 cents or maybe 1.99 for a new album was very tempting to a kid who only had x amount of money to spend each week. Found some treasures, and honestly found some tripe as well.
This one is a treasure, and much better than I recall.

Re: [Classic_Rock_Forever] Mott the Hoople - Mad Shadows

"The Hoople" was their 1974 follow up to their finest moment, "Mott". If you like Mott the Hoople at all, you should check out "Mott", which was the follow up to "All the Young Dudes" album. That one isnt bad either but the depth of writing, the playing and the recording of "Mott" is a real step up from everything before that.

"The Hoople" followed the departure of Mick Ralphs to Bad Company and Hunter drafted ex-Spooky Tooth guitarist Luther Grovsvenor and renamed him "Ariel Bender" to play guitar. Supposedly Bender was a hot player but when they got into the studio, he had very few ideas of his own and Hunter took the proceedings over. Previously with Ralphs, there was a real give and take, and that was gone. "The Hoople" sort of suffers from that, its all Hunter gone wild with no restraint, but there are some great moments, Alice, Crash Street Kidds, and Overend Watts funny Born Late 58.

a side story about Ralphs; he had already written "Cant Get Enough of Your Love" while he was in Mott, and he tried to sing it and couldnt do it, Hunter tried and he couldnt do it. There was a demo floating around and somehow Peter Grant of Led Zep got ahold of it. Swan Song records had just been formed and Pagey and the boys were looking for new British bands to manage and publish. Ralphs was contacted but couldnt sign due to contractual obligations with Motts management. Pagey said, "no problem, as I think I know a guy to sing on this,Paul Rodgers". Page and Grant bought out Ralphs contract and put him together with Rodgers and BLAM Bad Company was more or less formed, with some other bits of the story.

Another must have Mott album is "Live", which was recorded on their famous "Broadway tour" in NYC just after the release of "The Hoople". Its absolutely fabulous. I dont know how "clean" it is in terms of studio stuff afterwards, but its a great listen. Highly recommended. In the olde days it was a single vinyl release; these days its a double CD, with all the original tracks, PLUS lots of extra songs from the same concerts that didnt make it on the original version; plus a written introduction by Brian May (Queen opened for Mott on many of those concerts and May has often said it was truly a wild time)

No Waterlow on this one. I read that it is the 2nd album. I can verify that its very 'rough and tumble' to quote you. I enjoyed it much more than the 'The Hoople' album, where the glam seemed to be kicking in a bit more. Not that I don't like Glam, but the Mad Shadows album just seems to fit them better.

track list:
  1. "Thunderbuck Ram" (Mick Ralphs) - 4:50
  2. "No Wheels To Ride" - 5:50
  3. "You Are One Of Us" - 2:26
  4. "Walkin' With A Mountain" - 3:49
  5. "I Can Feel" - 7:13
  6. "Threads Of Iron" (Ralphs) - 5:12
  7. "When My Mind's Gone" - 6:31

to me, a singer does not define a band. I'm happy with whoever they get, if it sounds good. It doesnt bother me at all when a band replaces a singer, unless that singer happened to be a main music writer (as in the case of Freddie Mercury)

From my music biz pals in Chicago, Dennis DeYoung is a jerk, and the guys in Styx are happier without him.

Journey, I never liked Steve Perrys lyrics anyway. I know they sold 10billion albums to women, and I do like Dont stop believin, but other than that, I liked them more before Perry showed up.

Just my opinions.

Subject: [Classic_Rock_Forever] New Styx and Journey

I must tell you that I was reluctant to listen to the new Journey without Steve Perry, and the new Styx without Dennis DeYoung.  My boyfriend sent me some music last night with Arnel Pineda from Journey and Styx with their new lead singer.  I must tell you that I was blown away by how fabulous they were.  I should have known, as I'm a fan of older Van Halen opposed to the Roth era, and I still am to this day.  I'm very partial to the RedRocker Sammy Hagar.  Roth and Hagar debate I'm very vocal about, and it was even a deal breaker in my current relationship.  Granted I like Roth songs, just not him as a person.  I'll end my rant for the day.  :)

Life goes on, come what may
Pick up the pieces and roll!!!!!!!!!

Just be yourself, you're like no one else
There is nobody
You can't find it on a shelf
Just let the world know
That you're ready for show
