I could use some input here.
I have seen some statements that indicate that size of a kazoo affects the pitch range. The Kazoobie Kazoo site give the following sizes:
The Soprano Kazoo- the size of a standard kazoo, can bring out the highest pitch, flute.
The Alto Kazoo- 15 cm, imitating the sound of a clarinet and a trumpet.
The Tenor kazoo- 30 cm, saxophon.
The Bariton Kazoo- 46cm, french horn og jagdhorn.
The Kaboom Kazoo- 90cm, a membran diameter of 12,5cm, tuba.
I have not found that to be true. I can get very low notes out of a kazoo made with an inch of plastic straw and kitchen wrap. How high of notes I can get from a very large kazoo depends on how high I can get my voice at the time (I am normally a tenor, but sometimes can get up to soprano) not on the size of the instrument. That is, the pitch that goes in doesn't seem to vary much from the pitch that comes out, no matter what the size of the kazoo.
Now I can see that people may think it looks more realistic to use a small kazoo for high notes and a larger one for low notes. One of the great things about a kazoo is its versatility. In my experience, if the membrane is balanced between its diameter and it's thickness and or stiffness, you can get a lot of different instrument sounds out of it, in the full range of your voice.
Does anyone have any input on this? What are your experiences in this respect?
