well its all subjective. Everybody is entitled to their own subjective opinions, and I have no problem with that. Its when a person starts saying their subjective opinions are truth and law, that i get irritated. I get further irritated when a person or an institution or a magazine sets themselves up as some sort of authority on a particular subject; but then I found out later they have absolutely zero working experience in the given subject. Even worse when they want you to pay for their opinion.
but peeps just jawing around the water cooler, aint nothing wrong with that as long as everybody agrees its just subjective opinions.

Guitar Player and Guitar World magazines have done that, probably others too. They were polls of their readers, who are almost all practicing guitar players. And its interesting. You get the exact same top ten or twenty guys in every poll, the deep wells that everybody eventually goes to drink from when they're learning. Its the guys you'd expect, Hendrix, Page, Beck, Clapton, Blackmore, Stevie Ray, people like that.
You also get a lot of great players from the past that are relatively unknown now, Peter Green, Albert King, Duane Eddy, Django, people like that. Then the last part of the poll is always the hot guys right now, guys in metal bands and alternative bands and hot country pickers that I never heard of.

so make one. 100 guitarists, and discuss the criteria you used to make the list.
