I'd probably agree with Led Z. They were not celebrated nearly as much back then as they are now.
2 other groups that took it on the chin regularly was Grand Funk and Black Sabbath. Terrible press, I'm not sure if I've ever read a positive review of anything they've done. That only applies to reviews of a new release. Revisionist journalism now puts alot of Classic groups into a different circle, many years after the fact.
Of course Sabbath held onto success with a few ups and downs along the way.
Grand Funk for some reason has been forgotten by alot of folks. Intersting to wonder why. They were monsters back in the day, and now they have a helluva time filling the show lounge at our local casino. Realizing full well that Mark Farner is no longer a part of the group.

I believe that honor goes to Led Zeppelin.
