Re: [Classic_Rock_Forever] The Beaky band

It's a mixed bag really, we have a few very large pub/hotel groups like JD Wetherspoon who have bought up the larger more profitable pubs. JDW rarely have live band entertainment because they already have the turnover. It's usually the private owned pubs that have the bands, but have to pay the price for them in licences etc. Lots of pubs were turned into either posh wine/coffee bars or adult bars (table dancing / striptease). The decline began in the late eighties and has got worse each year with tax rises on beer and spirits each year and recently the smoking ban in public areas. It's said 100 pubs are closing down every month and either being converted like I've said or remain closed awaiting demolition. Standard pub closing times here are last orders at 10.30 for an 11.00pm doors closed. Late licences are available at extra cost but it requires additional security, the drinks are more expensive as these are usually pubs which become night clubs for late night drinking and dancing.

wow, thats not good.

A friend of mine went over to London in the 70s and was shocked that a lot of the pubs were private, and the ones that werent, closed by 10 pm.

Is it still like that?

Unfortunately Howldog.....not much! London is worse affected as the local councils have imposed an extremely costly Entertainment Licence on venues including pubs, clubs, theatres which also have to meet a very demanding safety standard, and punish heavily if sound levels are exceeded or rules flouted.

Whats happening in Britain to replace these pubs?

For any non-brits here in the group (and I believe there maybe a few) here is an example of what the British Pub Entertainment scene is like. The clip is self explanatory regarding the performers, and you may not know the players ex bands either they they were fairly big names in their day. Sadly pubs like this one The Red Lion in Isleworth, Middlesex are becoming fewer and fewer.
