Depending on just how you hold/play them, putting something dry like salt, rice, beans etc. in them can give a little extra to your rhythm if the cup or pot moves a little when you hit or tap..

now, personally, i tend to play my teapots as little udu drums -- one thumb over the spout, palm over the top, plenty o' spare fingers for tippy-tapping. my favorite couple of mugs also play well this way, though lacking the spout, of course.
