[Classic_Rock_Forever] Re: Top 5 Metal bands and Top 5 Rock bands

I think an better way to look at it is rock genre encompass a bunch of different sub styles. Looking at it that way it is easy to see why artist are listed under so many styles but Billy Joel said it best "it's all rock and roll to me"

Clint you are on the right track about iggy being the godfather of punk seeing he was playing it back in the 60's. The New York Doll took it to a different level in the early 70's. It wasnt till the Ramones that punk was even a gerne. They really put punk rock on the map. The Sex Pistols followed later. (but no less important).
In just a few years punk evolved from nothing to one style, changed and taken to another level and changed again. (makes me dizzy)

top 5 metal bands

1) black sabbath
2) metalica
3) Godsmack
4) Iron Maiden
5) Disturbed

top rock bands

1) rolling stones
2) zeppelin
3) Queen
4) Motley Crue
5) Aerosmith (just not live)

Didn’t do a whole lot for me, but I did test the water. Other groups were added in, and that’s where the confusion began for me. The Clash, which were much more appealing in sound, didn’t have what I considered Punk. Hell, they had a reggae-ish feel at times. Perhaps it was the lifestyle that was implied? Then, the Punks adopted Iggy as their Godfather, which is similar to the groups that are now considered ‘metal’ before metal was a coined term.

Metal bands came on the scene soon though......categorizing was never a science!

Now i think of them more as a hard rock band, compared to the metal that followed. Makes no difference though, they are a tremendous band whatever label they get - and i will be seeing them for the first time next month.
