Legendary BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphocytes, a type of cell that forms part of the immune system.

Iommi, 63, is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan and remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery.

This comes as BLACK SABBATHOzzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums) — are writing and recording their first album in 33 years in Los Angeles (still set for release this fall) with producer Rick Rubin. They will now go to the U.K. to continue to work with Tony.

Iommi's BLACK SABBATH and HEAVEN & HELL bandmate, legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio, died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010 at the age of 67.

In a June 2010 interview, Iommi stated about his former bandmate, "I was talking to Ronnie [a few days before he died], and he said, 'I've gotta have this new chemo, but I think it's working.' And that was the real big shock of it, because within a week of that, he had passed away. So it was a big shock for all of us, because we built ourselves up to [have him beat the disease] and, of course, we didn't expect to lose."

According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, lymphoma is the name for many different types of cancer that arise in the lymphocytes (immune cells). Treatment might involve chemotherapy and in some cases radiotherapy and/or bone marrow transplantation, and can be curable depending on the histology, type, and stage of the disease.

There are three types of lymphocytes: B lymphocytes (B cells), T lymphocytes (T cells) and natural killer (NK) cells. B lymphocytes make antibodies to fight infection; T lymphocytes have many functions, including helping B lymphocytes make the antibodies that fight infection; and natural killer cells attack cancer cells and viruses. Lymphoma may arise in any of these types of lymphocytes. In general, B-cell lymphomas are more common than T-cell lymphomas; however, in the skin, T-cell lymphomas are the most common type.

About 20 percent of the white cells in the blood are lymphocytes. Most lymphocytes are found in the lymphatic system, the major part of the body's immune system. The lymphatic system consists of a network of organs, including the spleen, the lymph nodes (small bean-shaped structures located throughout the body), the lymphatic vessels and areas in the gastrointestinal tract.

Lymphoma is divided into two major categories: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs), cancers of the T lymphocytes, constitute a rare group of NHLs that arise primarily in the skin and have various signs and symptoms, outcomes and treatment considerations.

JUDAS PRIEST's Rob Halford, MOTÖRHEAD's Lemmy Kilmister, DEEP PURPLE's Ian Gillan, Alice Cooper, Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH), Sebastian Bach (SKID ROW), Chris Jericho (FOZZY) and Dave Grohl (NIRVANA, FOO FIGHTERS) are among the artists who have signed on to be part of the upcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album which is being assembled by the singer's widow and longtime manager Wendy Dio.

"I'm letting them pick what songs they wanna do in the way they wanna do it," Wendy told Artisan News at last month's Dimebash event in Hollywood, California.

Tentatively due before the end of the year, the Dio tribute album will see Grohl covering BLACK SABBATH's "The Mob Rules" and Halford contributing a version of RAINBOW's "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll".

Ronnie James Dio, best known for his work with BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW and his own band DIO, died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010 at the age of 67.

Dio was renowned throughout the world as one of the greatest and most influential vocalists in heavy metal history. The singer, who was recording and touring with SABBATH offshoot HEAVEN & HELL prior to his illness, was diagnosed with stomach cancer in late 2009. He underwent chemotherapy and made what is now his final public appearance in April 2010 at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards in Los Angeles.

A free public memorial service was held on May 30, 2010 at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles, attended by more than 1,500 fans, friends and fellow musicians.

Wendy Dio, still oversees all projects and releases related to the career and music of her late husband.

Ronnie James Dio, real name Ronald James Padavona, was born in New Hampshire on July 10, 1942.

He moved to Cortland, New York at a young age, where he began playing with local acts. A street in Cortland, Dio Way, was named after him in 1988.

He released his first single, with a band called RONNIE AND THE REDCAPS, in 1959.

His first heavy rock act, ELF, released three albums and opened for DEEP PURPLE, where Dio's voice caught the ear of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Blackmore recruited Dio for his own band, RAINBOW, after leaving PURPLE in 1975.

Dio recorded three studio albums and one live set with RAINBOW before exiting in 1978, including "Rising" and "Long Live Rock And Roll".

He replaced Ozzy Osbourne in BLACK SABBATH in 1980, recording the "Heaven And Hell" and "Mob Rules" albums, plus "Live Evil", before leaving in 1982. He rejoined the group 10 years later for an album called "Dehumanizer", and again teamed with the group under the HEAVEN & HELL banner in 2006. HEAVEN & HELL released an album called "The Devil You Know" in 2009.

He has also recorded 10 studio albums with his own band, DIO, including a classic 1983 debut, "Holy Diver", and an equally renowned follow-up, 1984's "The Last In Line".

Dio was also behind the HEAR N' AID project, a collection of metal artists who recorded the track "Stars" in 1985 to raise funds for African famine relief.

Rock and metal musicians around the world paid tribute to Dio in the weeks and months following his death. STONE SOUR and SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor shared his feelings with The Pulse Of Radio about the fallen metal icon. "When I got that news that he had passed away, man, it seriously — it broke my heart. It broke it in two. Because honestly, I just feel like there will never be another Ronnie James Dio. He had such a pure voice — and still singing his ass off. I just know he'll be missed, and I will miss him as well."

Ex-VAN HALEN and current CHICKENFOOT bassist Michael Anthony also shared his memories of Dio with The Pulse Of Radio. "I don't know anybody that didn't grow up listening to his stuff," he said. "You know, VAN HALEN, we used to do from the first RAINBOW album, we did 'Man On The Silver Mountain'. I remember one time, the second VAN HALEN tour we were doing some festivals in Europe, and we actually played on the same show as Ronnie's band. Real powerful voice, you know, and definitely a driving force in hard rock music, that guy was."

Slash told The Pulse Of Radio that he felt the loss of Dio very keenly. "He's just somebody I was influenced by," he said. " I played all the RAINBOW stuff, I played the DIO stuff, the SABBATH stuff when I was in, you know, high school. I don't think that it's really set in what a, you know, huge figure in rock 'n' roll we lost, you know. Really major. Probably one of the most influential heavy metal singers of all time."

"American Idol" returns for its 11th season with a two-night premiere event Wednesday, January 18 (8:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT) and Thursday, January 19 (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET/PT) on Fox. Featuring host Ryan Seacrest and returning judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and AEROSMITH singer Steven Tyler, television's No. 1 series continues with a special, extended primetime broadcast Sunday, January 22 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/7:00-8:00 p.m. PT) following the NFC Championship Game on Fox.

Jackson, Lopez and Tyler traveled to Savannah, Aspen, Galveston, Pittsburgh, Portland, San Diego and St. Louis in search of contestants with the raw talent and potential to become the next "American Idol."

Lopez will reportedly earn $20 million next season, a nice raise from the $12 million she is said to have gotten for her first season. Tyler reportedly got an increase as well.

Despite Tyler's insistence that AEROSMITH would play the finale of the last season of "American Idol", AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry said in an online posting that the band was "never asked by producers" to perform at the event. He added that "Brad [Whitford, AEROSMITH guitarist had] a gig that night with [Experience Hendrix]. [It was] not logistically possible."

Perry did write that AEROSMITH is "looking forward to playing 'American Idol' next season when our new CD is out and we can prepare [for] a kick-ass show if they ask us."
AEROSMITH singer Steven Tyler tells Access Hollywood that behind the scenes, his life has changed since he signed on to appear as a judge on "American Idol", despite his superstar rock 'n' roll status.

"[Last season] it wasn't really accepted up front [with the rock community], mostly from my own bandmates because they didn't know what was going on with the AEROSMITH thing at the end. But it's brought younger kids to our music anyway," he said, noting AEROSMITH sales last year were up 260 percent.

Additionally, Tyler said it's been hard for him to now step out in public.

"It's like, 'Really?… I can't go anywhere anymore," he said.

In a 2010 interview, Kid Rock called Tyler's decision to become a judge on "American Idol" "the stupidest thing he's ever done in his life. He's a sacred American institution of rock 'n' roll, and he just threw it all out the window. Just stomped on it and set it on fire."

Rock added: "I think whoever's advising him ... we should bring back the guillotine, or whatever they call that thing. And if it was himself, he needs some serious counseling. I love him to death, but I gotta speak the truth."

MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx stood up for Tyler, saying on his syndicated radio show, "I don't have a problem with Kid Rock. I get what he's trying to do — he's trying to say 'American Idol' is cheesy… but the whole point of Steven Tyler being on 'American Idol' is to not make it cheesy!"

Sixx pointed out that the AEROSMITH frontman is "a real artist...he knows how to write songs, he plays instruments; he's one of the greatest singers and one of the greatest frontmen of all time. So who's better to judge somebody then Steven? There should be more Steven Tylers on there!"

Sixx added that he chatted with Tyler about potentially finding "the next Jimi Hendrix, the next Janis Joplin" via "Idol". "This is a positive thing for music," he insisted. "This is a pipeline that we usually don't have. . . I do know this: Steven is doing a forward-thinking, really cool thing."

GODSMACK singer Sully Erna also came to the defense of Tyler, telling a Detroit rock station of Steven's decision to join "Idol", "I think it's brilliant. Beyond good. I think he's gonna be the male Paula Abdul, 'cause he's a little bit dingy, you know what I mean?! He's probably all pilled up, and he's gonna be funny. I mean, he's witty, he's really witty."

Erna added, "It's supposedly the right thing to do is to rag on a show like that, 'cause it's so popular, and everybody that has a problem most of the time, they have a problem with something that's really popular — it's the envy/jealousy thing . . . I think it's brilliant that Steven Tyler is gonna be one of the judges."

As for Rock, Erna said, "Kid Rock needs to shut up. This is gonna be great for TV, man."

Speaking at an "Idol" press conference in Los Angeles, Tyler responded to Rock's comments, saying, "He's just jealous, he's just jealous. And he's working his new record, so God bless him."

Slash also called Tyler's decision "disappointing."

Tyler's "Idol" gig stunned his bandmates when it was announced. Bassist Tom Hamilton said he'd never watched "American Idol" and that the band found out about Tyler's involvement from its management. Guitarist Joe Perry voiced his displeasure in public, calling the program "one step above ('Teenage Mutant') 'Ninja Turtles'."

"American Idol" returns for its 11th season with a two-night premiere event Wednesday, January 18 (8:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT) and Thursday, January 19 (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET/PT) on Fox. KISS lead singer Paul Stanley underwent successful surgery on October 25, 2011 for "recurring vocal cord issues" that the musician said "come with 40 years of preaching rock 'n' roll." Stanley told The Hollywood Reporter that he powered through four decades of concerts "through sheer willpower" so his band could "cram in as many shows as possible to maximize profit." But, he cautioned, "the nature of rock singing is a strain on the voice and when you compound that with that amount of shows, you're not giving yourself time to recuperate and the problem is compounded… I was finding myself working harder and harder to do what was once effortless, and having already passed through puberty, I was surprised to hear my voice cracking."

In a new segment scheduled to air on January 9, Paul shares his thoughts with ABC's "Nightline".

KISS has completed recording its new album, "Monster", for a late spring release. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "It's A Long Way Down", "Back To The Stone Age", "Shout Mercy", "Out Of This World", "Wall Of Sound" and "Hell Or Hallelujah".

Stanley recently admitted that he's never surprised by how deep KISS' fan devotion continues to run worldwide. "It really for me, resoundingly once again, I guess validates for me why this band exists," he told The Pulse Of Radio. "It's not a tepid recreation of the past, it's really an ageless beast that dominates at will. It's timeless."
Last fall, METALLICA started writing the studio follow-up to 2008's "Death Magnetic", working from riffs and licks taped during the band's tuning-room jams over the past three years of touring.

"We're about seven, eight songs into it," METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich tells Rolling Stone magazine about the record, which will once again be produced by Rick Rubin. "We do it in rounds. We come up with something, we leave it, go to the next thing, come up with something basic, leave it and circle back around. Next month we'll go back and start embellishing: 'Let's double that one part and come up with a middle bit.'"

"If 'Death Magnetic' was a logical successor to [1988's] '…And Justice For All', the next album will be a heavier Black Album," METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett tells Rolling Stone, using the popular nickname for 1991's "Metallica". "We're not going to the depths of complexity that we did for 'Death Magnetic'. The stuff we're coming up with is more groove-oriented, a heavier version of what we were doing in the early Nineties."

"When people talk about the old stuff, they think 'Justice'," Ulrich tells Rolling Stone. "But look at 'Harvester Of Sorrow' on that album. It's a fairly simple five-minute song. And 'Fuel' [on 1997's 'Reload'] is an absolute scorcher live. Right now, I'm thinking shorter, more to-the-point."

A 3D movie starring METALLICA is in the early stages of production, with a projected release date of summer 2013. The film does not have a title yet, a finished script or a director. "Imagine if you took 'The Song Remains The Same'," Ulrich tells Rolling Stone, referring to the 1976 LED ZEPPELIN movie, "which is 75 percent concert, 25 percent other stuff, and flipped it around. And all the nonconcert footage, instead of being about the band members, is a story that unfolds, set against the backdrop of the concert."

According to Ulrich, the METALLICA members are financing the film production on their own. "We tend to pay for these things ourselves," he says. "The minute you take somebody else's money, you have to consider their opinions. And that's no fun."

"We didn't want to do it at first," Hammett tells Rolling Stone about the 3D flick. "We were sold on it by our managers, that it would be a lot of fun and we would have a big-ass stage to play on — the biggest METALLICA live show we've ever done, next-level stuff."

METALLICA will release a physical CD edition of its current digital EP, "Beyond Magnetic", on January 31. The four-song EP, which featured songs recorded during the sessions for "Death Magnetic", was issued digitally on December 13, shortly after the band premiered all four songs live during its quartet of 30th anniversary shows in San Francisco earlier that month.

The tracks are "Hate Train", "Just A Bullet Away", "Hell And Back" and "Rebel Of Babylon".

METALLICA issued a collaborative album with Lou Reed called "Lulu" in November, but the conceptual disc was a commercial and critical flop.

The band is scheduled to perform the Black Album in its entirety at several European festivals this summer, and has hinted at several other big events on tap for 2012.

An El Paso arson suspect told investigators she set her father's home on fire because of messages in the heavy-rock music of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails, a court document stated.
Fire Department investigators arrested Christina Paz, 29, soon after she allegedly set an early-morning fire that seriously damaged her father's home in the Cielo Vista area last week. No one was injured in the blaze.
Paz faces a felony charge of arson of a habitation and remains jailed in lieu of posting $20,000 bond.
A complaint affidavit obtained Tuesday by the El Paso Times described what Paz told investigators while being questioned in an interview room at the police Pebble Hills Regional Command Center.
After being asked whether she was comfortable or wanted anything to drink, Paz was read her Miranda rights but agreed to talk when an investigator asked about the fire, the affidavit stated.
Paz told investigators she grew up in the house in the 8000 block of Parkland Drive. She said she broke into the home and had been staying there for a few days, the affidavit stated.
Neighbors and relatives had said Paz's father had been in a nursing home dealing with an illness. Paz's sister had said the situation was complicated and she had not seen Paz in years.
The document stated that Paz told investigators "she was angry at her mom and dad for trying to kill her on Christmas Day, that they had planned to sodomize her and chop her up with the help of a neighbor."
An investigator asked Paz how she knew her parents wanted to kill her "and she said through the music of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails."
Marilyn Manson, a heavy-metal rocker known as the "Anti- christ Superstar," was embroiled in controversy in the 1990s with a freakish image, outlandish lyrics and stunts such as burning the Bible on stage. Nine Inch Nails is an industrial rock band that is also no stranger to controversy.
Paz, according to the affidavit, told investigators she wanted to burn the house to get back at her parents. On Dec. 27, she allegedly poured flammable super glue on a bed, which she then lighted, and then went into another room and set fire to the curtains.
After starting the fires, Paz grabbed her bags, walked outside and waited in the front yard.
The document stated a police officer with the El Paso Independent School District saw smoke coming from the house and arrived before firefighters. The officer saw Paz standing in front of the home. When he turned on his police car's flashing lights, she walked over to him and told him she had burned the house. She was taken into custody.

HALFORD guitarist "Metal" Mike Chlasciak has tapped Mike LePond of progressive metallers SYMPHONY X to play bass on Chlasciak's solo album, "The Metalworker".

"I am really excited to have once again being able to work with Mike," said Chlasciak.

"Mike's ability as a musician and bassist are hard to match. He came in unbelievably well prepared and just tore it up as we all expect of him to. It was amazing to see how quickly he works in the studio.

"I would like to thank Mike for his fantastic work!"

He added, "If you are in need for no-apologies screaming heavy metal we all love, then we have the record for you. I'm really looking forward to sharing this with everyone."

Drummer Kevin Talley (DAATH, SIX FEET UNDER, CHIMAIRA, HATE ETERNAL, DYING FETUS) stated about his involvement with "The Metalworker", "As a full-time studio drummer, it is sometimes overwhelming to constantly track ultra-technical brutal death metal songs. But, while tracking 'The Metalworker' album for Metal Mike, it reminds me why I got into metal in the first place … straight-forward brutal catchy riffs without any of the B.S. associated with most metal bands today. This is the 'meat and potatoes' of metal, if you will. It's not one of those 'Can I have a side salad, please?' type of bands. The album plows with killer riffage, ragin' leads, and ultra-sick double bass for days."

"The Metalworker" is currently being mixed at Dead Room Recording Studio in San Antonio, Texas with engineer Orlando Villasenor.

"The Metalworker" additionally features vocal siren Carlos Zema (OUTWORLD).

Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "On Leather Wings", "Don't Shoot The Crown" and "Hell No".
"Imaginaerum", the first album in four years from Finnish/Swedish symphonic metallers NIGHTWISH, has been certified gold in Germany for sales in excess of 100,000 copies.

Commented NIGHTWISH keyboardist/mainman Tuomas Holopainen: "Germany never fails us! Only five weeks since the release and 'Imaginaerum' goes gold! Magical, wondrous, imaginative and grateful times we're living. Huge thanks to all the fans and the fellowship of Nuclear Blast!"

"Imaginaerum" entered the official chart in Finland at position No. 1 and has already been certifield triple platinum in the country after shifting more than 60,000 units.

Note: The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) in Finland has revised the sales requirements for albums to reach platinum status in the country from the pre-2010 level of 30,000 to the current 20,000.

The band's first CD since 2007's "Dark Passion Play" — which was then-new singer Anette Olzon's debut — "Imaginaerum" is due in North America on January 10 via Roadrunner Records.

"Imaginaerum" track listing (note that track 12 is broken down into four parts):

01. Taikatalvi
02. Storytime
03. Ghost River
04. Slow, Love, Slow
05. I Want My Tears Back
06. Scaretale
07. Arabesque
08. Turn Loose the Mermaids
09. Rest Calm
10. The Crow, the Owl and the Dove
11. Last Ride of the Day
12. Song Of Myself
Song 1: From A Dusty Bookshelf
Song 2: All That Great Heart Lying Still
Song 3: Piano Black
Song 4: Love
13. Imaginaerum

NIGHTWISH will play a "secret" gig under the name RUBBER BAND OF WOLVES at the Key Club in West Hollywood, California on January 19 — two days before the Finnish/Swedish symphonic metal act's world-tour kick-off performance at the Gibson Ampitheater in Universal City. The Universal City concert will be the biggest NIGHTWISH show production ever on North American soil and strictly a one-off — there will be no U.S. tour until later in 2012.
GODSMACK singer Sully Erna is at home resting after undergoing surgery on his left knee from a sport injury he sustained a while back. According to a post on the band's official web site, Sully "said he is already bored and ready to get back to work."

Erna told BostonHerald.com last month that the band was heading back to the studio in January to mix a live disc and record a handful of cover songs that Erna says "inspired us along the way." A spring tour with fellow Massachusetts rockers STAIND also is on tap.

Erna's December 16 solo performance at The Wilbur Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts was professionally filmed for an upcoming 3D DVD release. The concert is also slated to air on Palladia, a cable music channel that ran a documentary about the making of his solo album "Avalon".

Released in September 2010, "Avalon" features flutes, cellos, hand drums and other exotic instrumentation, along with female vocals. Erna has emphasized that it is "not a rock record."

SIXX: A.M. — the band consisting of Nikki Sixx (also of MÖTLEY CRÜE), DJ Ashba (also of GUNS N' ROSES) and James Michael — has begun writing material for its third album. According to Sixx, the CD will "probably [be] a 2013 release considering the body of work we're setting as a goal."

"7", the latest EP from SIXX: A.M., came out last month and sold around 2,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The effort contains acoustic versions of songs from the group's first two albums — 2007's "The Heroin Diaries" soundtrack and 2011's "This Is Gonna Hurt".

SIXX: A.M. will be "doing a proper video" for its next single soon, according to Sixx. In addition, "tour options keep coming, but we haven't found the right fit yet to open up the conversations," Nikki writes on his Facebook page.

SIXX: A.M. recently revealed plans to film a video for the song "Skin" in the Los Angeles area. The band put out a casting call for people whom the song has affected personally because of their own scars — whether physical or under the surface.

"Skin" comes off SIXX: A.M.'s sophomore album, "This Is Gonna Hurt", which has sold around 95,000 copies since its May 2011 release. Released on May 3, 2011, the 11-track CD is a companion piece to Sixx's "This Is Gonna Hurt: Music, Photography And Life Through The Distorted Lens Of Nikki Sixx" book, a follow-up to his New York Times bestseller, "The Heroin Diaries".

"This Is Gonna Hurt" is part photo, part journal — but all Nikki Sixx. It is a collection of compelling snapshots and stories that capture the rage, love, optimism, darkness, and determination that shape his work. Told with the raw authenticity that defined his New York Times bestseller "The Heroin Diaries", "This Is Gonna Hurt" chronicles Sixx's experience, from references to his early years filled with toxic waste to his success with MÖTLEY CRÜE, his death from an OD and rebirth to his addictions to music, photography, and love along with the journey of photographing these images over the past couple of years.
The "This Is Gonna Hurt" album as a whole deals with many raw, human issues. Nikki talks about the CD as "pulling back the veil on your internal truth," saying, "We are who we are… Either poisonous and evil or honest and willing… Willing to make a difference… I haven't led the life of a saint nor do I intend on it now." The album — produced entirely by James Michael with writing credits going to Sixx, Michael, Ashba and band friends John William Lowrey and Blair Daly — dives deep into meandering emotions through epic melodies. The resulting work is a deep, dark and intoxicatingly addictive mix of sounds and passion.
Mike Patton (FAITH NO MORE, TOMAHAWK, MR. BUNGLE) has been selected by writer/director Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine") to provide the score for "The Place Beyond The Pines", which stars Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes.

Patton, who rose to prominence as a teenager as the frontman for FAITH NO MORE and is known as one of music's most eclectic musicians, has done a series of scores over the past few years, including the Italian drama "A Solitude Of Prime Numbers", "Crank 2: High Voltage" and the short film "A Perfect Place". Patton is also currently working on a new TOMAHAWK album with a projected late summer release date.

According to RadarOnline.com, KORN guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer married actress Evis Xheneti on Monday, January 2 in Paris, France.

"We wanted to get married in Paris because this is our city," Evis told RadarOnline.com. "James proposed at the Eiffel tower, so it just seemed like we were supposed to get married here."

Described as a 1920s-style romantic wedding, it was held inside "a small, 200-year-old church on the Seine river." A small group of family and friends attended the wedding, including the bride's sister, singer Xhoana Xheneti, KORN's manager of twenty years and one of Shaffer's best friends, Jeff Kwatinetz, and KORN's tour manager, Jens Geiger.

The newlyweds will go on a honeymoon in a secret tropical location in a few months.

German thrash metal veterans KREATOR have entered Studiomega in Varberg, Sweden with producer Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMON AMARTH, PARADISE LOST) to begin recording their new album for a late spring 2012 release.

When asked about the musical direction of KREATOR's new material, the band's guitarist/vocalist Miland "Mille" Petrozza stated in a recent interview, "The songs are coming along great and I think it's OK to say that this will be our most epic album so far. There's some classical, a lot of traditional metal, and, of course, a huge dose of thrash metal influences in the new stuff. Everyone in the band is very excited at this point. The demos sound killer so far. We have about 10 songs we're working on so far.

Regarding the lyrical and visual concept for the forthcoming CD, Petrozza said, "It's too early to talk about the lyrics yet; many are written, but they keep changing all the time. Visually, we have tapped Wes Benscoter [BLACK SABBATH, DIO, SLAYER, CATTLE DECAPITATION, BLOODBATH] for the cover art. I can tell you this much: The artwork will be insane!"

In an interview with Aftonbladet journalist Mattias Kling, Petrozza stated about KREATOR's collaboration with Jens Bogren, "He's really good; I like him. I like the sounds that he gets. And I think the combination — Jens Bogren and KREATOR — it will be pretty heavy."

On the topic of how the new material is different from KREATOR's previous output, Mille said, "It's always a little hard for me to talk about music has been written but is not released yet. It will definitely have all the KREATOR trademarks. The lyrics will talk about nowadays stuff, as usual, so it will be like a photography of the year 2012. Also the lyrics will deal a lot of things that are actually happening at this point in time. It will be like reading a newspaper or something [laughs], with all the stuff happening. And, of course, the music will be typical KREATOR, and we also wanna expand the sound and progress as musicians. I mean, this lineup has been the strongest lineup KREATOR ever had since ten years, and now I think we're ready to come out with an album that blows everyone away."

KREATOR is:

Miland "Mille" Petrozza – Vocals, Guitrar
Sami Yli-Sirniö - Guitar
Christian "Speesy" Giesler - Bass
Jürgen "Ventor" Reil – Drums

German thrash metal veterans DESTRUCTION have commenced work on their 30th-anniversary album. The CD is tentatively due before the end of the year.

Inspired by IRON MAIDEN, MERCYFUL FATE, MOTÖRHEAD and VENOM, DESTRUCTION was formed as KNIGHT OF DEMON in 1982. The band's original lineup included vocalist and bassist Marcel "Schmier" Schirmer, drummer Tommy Sandmann, and guitarist Mike Sifringer. They soon changed their name to DESTRUCTION and released a demo titled "Bestial Invasion Of Hell" in 1984.

"Day Of Reckoning", the latest album from DESTRUCTION, sold around 800 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 58 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

"Day Of Reckoning" entered the German Media Control chart at position No. 95. The CD was released in Europe on February 18, 2011 via Nuclear Blast Records. The first limited edition of the album did not feature the band's logo on the booklet while the vinyl version and second pressing of the CD showed a red DESTRUCTION logo on it.

"Day Of Reckoning" was the first album to feature DESTRUCTION's new drummer Vaaver (INDUKTI, ex-UNSUN).

Massachusetts metallers KILLSWITCH ENGAGE have released the following statement:

"We've been getting a lot of inquiries about the [vacant KILLSWITCH ENGAGE] singer position. If you are interested, please send an MP3 or a song link, a photo and a brief description of yourself to the management email address provided in the contact section of KillswitchEngage.com."

Former KILLSWITCH ENGAGE frontman Howard Jones issued a statement regarding his departure from the group, which was announced last week. Jones wrote in part, "I've had a pretty interesting couple of years, to say the least, battling with some personal issues. One of the low points being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes that went unchecked for years. The rest of the band stuck with me through it, and, to be honest, they are the ones that kept me going. The whole experience definitely put a scare in me."

He continued, "Recently we've all been in writing mode, but somehow I couldn't get excited about the new album and all the touring that would go with it. The guys saw it before I did. In hindsight, I now realize that my heart wasn't in it."

Jones thanked the rest of the band for "an amazing decade," adding, "I have so many good memories, and those are the ones that I will keep."

The band said in its statement last week, "We love Howard and are thankful for the nine years that we've had him in the band. Out of respect for everyone involved we will not be discussing the specific reasons behind this decision. Howard is a part of our family and always will be, and we wish him well."

No replacement has been found yet for the 41-year-old Jones, who joined KILLSWITCH in 2002 after the departure of original vocalist Jesse Leach. Jones sang on the band's last three studio efforts, including 2009's self-titled set.

SEVENDUST members Clint Lowery (guitar) and Morgan Rose (drums) have launched a brand new project called CALL ME NO ONE. They will begin recording their debut album before the end of the month for a late spring release. "[It's] gonna be very exciting," says Lowery.

In other news, SEVENDUST will begin writing a new album over the summer for an early 2013 release.

SEVENDUST's latest CD, "Cold Day Memory", sold around 27,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 12 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The band's previous effort, "Chapter VII: Hope and Sorrow", opened with 25,000 units back in April 2008 to land at position No. 19.

"Cold Day Memory" was released on April 20, 2010 on the band's own 7Bros. Records, through Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group. The CD — produced by Grammy Award winner Johnny K (DISTURBED, STAIND, 3 DOORS DOWN, PLAIN WHITE T'S) — was the group's first new album with its original lineup back together with guitarist Clint Lowery's return after his departure in 2003.

According to a new Facebook post from THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN frontman Greg Puciato, he and Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SEPULTURA) recently took part in another songwriting session for their collaborative album.

Puciato previously stated about his project with Cavalera, "[I] maybe haven't heard Max sound this pissed since [SEPULTURA's] 'Chaos A.D.'"

In a 2011 interview with Sweden's Metalshrine, Max said about his collaboration with Puciato, "Greg loves NAILBOMB and he's trying to get me to do a NAILBOMB kind of project. He's saying we can do something very similar to NAILBOMB where the both of us sing, like me and Alex [Newport of FUDGE TUNNEL did in NAILBOMB] and what we had and it will be what me and Greg have. We're gonna share the vocals and I think the drummer from MARS VOLTA might be the drummer and the bass player from CONVERGE might be playing bass and we're looking for a guitar player right now. But it's gonna be like a project, not a band like CAVALERA CONSPIRACY or SOULFLY. It's gonna be just a one-off album, something heavy to put out there. Something that me and Greg like to do. I had a great experience with him working on 'Rise Of The Fallen' [song from the latest SOULFLY album] and we became good friends and he started calling me about this 'NAILBOMB part 2' idea and I couldn't say no. I just thought it would be great and I'm really looking forward to it. I'd like to do as much music as possible, so he came with a new project for me."

Puciato joined SOULFLY on stage at the 14th annual "D-Low Memorial" on August 28, 2010 at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Arizona to perform the song "Rise Of The Fallen". Fan-filmed video footage of his appearance can be viewed below.

Jägermeister has just announced details of its next "Ice Cold" studio session where rock bands and icons meet for the first time in a recording studio and "break the ice" by working on a track together.

The next "Ice Cold" studio session will feature British heavy metal band MALEFICE and football legend Marcus Hahnemann and will take place at London's famous Strongroom Studios on January 17.

Hahnemann, U.S. international goalkeeper ("Best goalkeeper in the world" – 2009/2010 Castrol Performance Index), who is currently playing for Everton is a well-known heavy metal fan but this will be the first time he has ever taken his passion for metal into a recording studio.

Hahnemann said: "Today I have come down to London for the Arsenal game. Getting ready for the game always includes some heavy rock to get me going. But I can't stop thinking about when I am coming back down here in a few weeks to record with MALEFICE! So hopefully my love of music and their love of football with translate to a really cool track!"

Reading band MALEFICE is one of the leading exponents of modern British heavy metal and released its album "Awaken The Tides" to critical acclaim last year.

Commented MALEFICE vocalist Dale Butler: "We're really stoked to be recording a special track with Marcus Hahnemann. Given that before every game he listens to FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH or SLIPKNOT to 'get himself psyched' for the game has to be a pretty good indicator of where his musical tastes are! We even have a track 'Outnumbered/Outgunned' on our album 'Awaken The Tides' which is all about that rush of adrenaline you get when you're with your mates at the terraces in the away end on a Saturday afternoon, so this collaboration of football and metal is gonna be something you won't want to miss."

The collaboration will be streamed from February 1 exclusively on the Jägermeister U.K. Facebook page, where you will also be able to find photos and extended footage of the recording process.

Brian Giffin of Australia's Loud magazine recently conducted an interview with guitarist Ben Weinman from New Jersey's avant-garde supremos THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the band's next album:

Ben: "We're about to start working out ideas and we'll be doing that basically until we come to Australia [in February]. I traditionally come up with the start of most of the ideas and then myself and our drummer will kind of work on them and formulate songs and get the ball rolling."

On the songwriting process:

Ben: "You know, every time I finish a record, I feel like I can't make another one. I'm done. I have no more DILLINGER in me. Then after a year or two of just touring heavily on that music, it just seems to come naturally, to start working on new stuff."

On the recording process:

Ben: "It takes a while. Because one of the things that we try to maintain is a certain level of… we're pretty critical about how we record and the music we make. Sometimes playing those guitars parts takes hours and hours because not only do we have to get it done once correctly — which is difficult enough — we have to do four or five more overdubs. It certainly can be pretty daunting."

On the use of electronics and technology during the making of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN's last album, "Option Paralysis":

Ben: "There's a lot less electronic elements on 'Option Paralysis' than there was on 'Ire Works', we definitely used it. We use computers quite a lot to come up with ideas. While we did a lot more traditional jamming in the basement, so to speak, on that one, I definitely sort things out on computers a lot. Really try to look at things and try new things and push things and I've even used the computer at times to re-arrange ideas so they're different to what I'm used to and take myself out of the comfort zone that I'm used to.

"From Day One we've always incorporated new ideas and new influences and never stuck to just the traditional metal sound that's just stuck to a formula. It definitely created a scenario where we had a lot of freedom to be creative and enjoy what we're doing and not feel that we're bound to a specific style that fans are strict about."

On working with jazz fusion pianist Mike Garson, best known for his long-time role with David Bowie's band but whose work has appeared on about 100 albums with artists as diverse at Stanley Clarke, Seal, SOMETHING FOR KATE and NINE INCH NAILS, among others:

Ben: "Just because of the amount of stories that he has, just from being a professional piano player for… oh God, for well longer than I've been alive. I mean, the stories are amazing, just sitting there… but also to see his enthusiasm to just sit down and play music. To be so enthusiastic about playing with a band like us, it was amazing. I mean, it made me realize that we can keep doing this as long as we want to. As long as our heart's in it, we can continue to push ourselves and play and make music that's inspiring and feels good. That was a great inspiration. But I have to say, I originally wrote that song on piano… having him come in and play parts of it, it really put me in my place, I'll tell you that much. I realise that playing piano like that is like a superpower that I will never possess."

Oakland, California thrashers DEFIANCE have officially called it quits.

Commented the band: "After coming to the realization that the music industry was falling apart, and without the internal bond that DEFIANCE had in back in their heydays, it was decided by [guitarist] Jim [Adams] to shut down all activities to avoid being completely financially wiped out. Jim has since moved on and joined SEVERED FIFTH and will be releasing a full length album in February 2012 titled 'Liberate'.

The final lineup of DEFIANCE was as follows:

Jim Adams - Guitar
Shawn Bozarth - Guitar
Keven Albert - Vocals
Mike Kaufmann - Bass
Burton Ortega - Drums

DEFIANCE played its first show since 1994 on December 19, 2009 at Blake's on Telegraph in Berkeley, California.

Mark Hernandez (drums) and Steev Esquivel (vocals) left DEFIANCE in 2009 to concentrate on their primary bands, FORBIDDEN and SKINLAB, respectively.

DEFIANCE's latet album, "The Prophecy", was released on October 19, 2009 via Candlelight Records. The first collection of new music from DEFIANCE in over 15 years was recorded at Trident Studios and Greendot Studios in East Bay, California.

An e-card for "The Prophecy" can be accessed at this location.

Part of the so-called "second wave" of Bay Area thrash (which also included the likes of FORBIDDEN, VIO-LENCE, DEATH ANGEL, and TESTAMENT), DEFIANCE officially disbanded in 1993 after the departure of vocalist Steev Esquivel (who would go on to form SKINLAB, and later RE:IGNITION), while the remaining members, with the addition of vocalist Dave Godfrey White (HEATHEN), formed INNER THRESHOLD, which would also eventually disband.

"I Am Heresy", a song by I AM HERESY, the new band featuring members of BOYSETSFIRE (Nathan Gray), CHAMBERS (Gregg Kautz), MAY 4TH MASSACRE (Simon Gray, Jonah Latshaw), and THE DEAD AND GONE (Jay Konieko, Crumbs Konieko), can be streamed below.

What happens when your band falls apart and everything you worked toward is abruptly thrown away? You start a new one! That is exactly what Nathan Gray (BOYSETSFIRE, THE CASTING OUT) decided to do once his last musical effort, THE CASTING OUT, ceased to exist. Not one to sit around and cry about the situation, he decided to move forward and form something completely new. He didn't have to look far though, realizing that his son Simon Gray and fellow bandmate Jonah Latshaw both were very talented musicians in their own right, he recruited them to start a new band. Going back to the roots of what made BOYSETSFIRE such a powerful force in the punk/hardcore scene, mixed in with the younger metal influence of Simon and Jonah, I AM HERESY was formed. To help complete the band and take it to the next level, brothers Jay and Crumbs Konieko were added on bass and drums, respectively. The last piece to the puzzle to help reinforce such and imposing sound was former CHAMBERS guitarist Gregg Kautz.

As a whole each, bandmember brings their own unique musical style to form an imposing wall of sound that has and will continue to grow and evolve.

Finnish melodic gothic metal/rock band LUNAR PATH will release its debut album, "Memento Mori", on February 1 via Inverse Records.

According to a press release, "Memento Mori" is "a concept album about a downward spiral in depression and death, set out to stretch the boundaries of traditional melodic/gothic metal with its dark and brooding atmosphere. This nightmarish journey through hell and back was inspired by arson, mishaps, bad luck as well as the lineup changes the band endured during these past years. These events shaped the band and transformed the album into a dynamic ensemble with warm and cold flashes of traditional metal and darkly progressive stunts, promising to raise eyebrows and make hearts race."

"Memento Mori" features guest appearances by such acclaimed musicians and vocalists such as Attila Csihar (MAYHEM, ABORYM), Tuomas Saukkonen (BEFORE THE DAWN, BLACK SUN AEON), Juha-Pekka Leppäluoto (CHARON, NORTHERN KINGS, HARMAJA) and Antti Leskinen (FATAL SOUND PROJECT, CHAINED, MURENA).

Formed in late 2006, LUNAR PATH released a few demos and EPs before starting to work on "Memento Mori". The band became victims of arson in early 2010 when a deranged person intentionally set fire to the ground floor of their practice flat while the band was playing, trapping them upstairs. During the attempt to reach safety, guitarist and album producer Jonas Eriksson sustained severe damage to his foot, but luckily nobody else was hurt in the fire. The band didn't spend their time crying over spilled milk as a few months later the band toured Scandinavia supporting DEATHSTARS and ex-IRON MAIDEN vocalist Paul Di'Anno; with Eriksson playing the entire tour sitting down with his broken leg in a cast.

LUNAR PATH lead vocalist Janica Lönn has been working with BLACK SUN AEON lately, most notably singing on their newly released and highly acclaimed "Blacklight Deliverance" album. She will also perform live with BLACK SUN AEON at this year's Summer Breeze open-air festival in Germany and other European festivals.

Former INCANTATION bassist Joey "Fingers" Lombard passed away on January 3, 2012 at the age of 42. A resident of Windber, Pennsylvania, he was most recently employed by Lockheed Martin in Johnstown.

Commented INCANTATION drummer Kyle Severn: "Joey was one of the nicest people you could ever meet.

"Joey had stepped up to the plate and joined John McEntee and myself back in 2000 to create some of INCANTATION's finest blasphemy to date!!! He stuck with us for five-plus long years of writing and traveling the death metal roads!! He was an amazing musician and bass player. He had contributed more than most could imagine to the death metal scene. He had made many new friends through those years on the road; he was such a likable guy. I don't think he had a mean bone in his body. He will be truly missed.

"Services will be held in Johnstown, Pennsylvania Sunday evening."

Joey was preceded in death by mother Gladys (Byrne) Lombard and brother William Lombard. He is survived by father Dennis Lombard and wife Mary, Florida; wife of 16 years Cynthia (Headrick) Lombard; stepdaughter, Ariana Lamer; sisters Cathy, wife of Steve Aviles, Ohio; and Christine Lombard, Florida; and nieces and nephews, Brian, Rebecca and Emily Aviles; Cori Headrick; and Tyler and Karson Headrick; also godson Skyler Stiles.

Also available will be a limited amount of special pre-order bundles containing merch items exclusive to these bundles.

In a recent interview with Decibel magazine, GOATWHORE guitarist Sammy Duet stated that the band's forthcoming CD will feature "the same exact [guitar] sound I used on 'Carving Out The Eyes Of God'. We're just trying to improve on that sound — make it bigger and fatter. That 'Carving' guitar sound was fucking incredible, and that's why me and Rutan spent half the week trying to get it to sound even better, which I believe we achieved. It's gonna have that growly, sub-nuclear kind of sound, but I think it's gonna be almost more refined in a way — but still very nasty."

He added, "The drums are a lot more natural-sounding. A lot of producers today, I don't know; they make the drums sound fake. They sound good, but almost too good. We're just trying to make it sound real and not like a drum machine.

"There's the same amount of solos on 'Carving'; maybe a few more. But there's gonna be a lot of other… I wouldn't exactly call them guitar solos that are gonna be going on underneath the music, but there's gonna be certain things there that will be very different. There's definitely some shit I've never really done before ever that I've just been experimenting with. You have to hear it. It's hard to explain. It's like a solo and not a solo."

"I think a lot of people are expecting us to repeat ourselves, but it's not gonna be like that. We could have easily gone and written 'Carving Out The Eyes Of God Part II' because that album is such a natural feeling for us musically. But we didn't want to do that."
