That is the truth. Not sure of the details, but a newsletter that came out a while back said that Jon had cancer and was thanking the many well wishers who had contacted him.
Here's an excerpt from his homepage.

When Classic Rock Awards recently honoured Deep Purple with The Innovator Award, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover and Ian Paice were there to accept the award.
Ian Paice read out this message from Jon:
I very much wanted to be there this evening to stand with these fine chaps - my musical companions of more than forty years and indeed my friends for a lifetime but, although my progress is really good, I am finding that the treatment I am undergoing often leads me more towards a cup of cocoa and an early night than to a bottle of red wine with it's accompanying table-full of wonderfully scurrilous gossipmongers and joke-tellers. <--pins

Coincidentally, I bought tickets to see Deep Purple this week.
This will be the first time for me. I`ve seen a pile of those legacy groups
over the years, but these guys have eluded me till now. I`m well aware of
the current lineup, and am good with that. Don Airey was a struggle at
first. Certainly not because of ability, he`s very good, if not as
adventurous as Mr. Lord.
Now, as long as they don`t bow out, I`ll be a happy camper come Feb 16th.

Yes, December 3rd, 1971, Frank Zappa and the Mothers were playing the best
place in town, the Montreux Casino, when some stupid with a flare gun burned
the place to the ground.
..and a group af musicians were given the inspiration for a classic song
with a riff every young guitarist wanted to learn.
We looked at Deeep Purple's "Made in Japan" live album and the story how we
almost never got to hear it!
