I was using some hi end Inifinity studio reference monitors to mix with a couple of years ago, but it made everything sound "too good". then when we played the mixes in our cars or on a boombox, didnt sound good.

so I bought a pair of nice Yamaha flat studio nearfield monitors, which sound flat as heck but really good. No bass at all, so, I use a pair of old Polk audio bookshelf speakers, via another outlet, and mix them in to taste. I use old recordings by Abba, Heart, and Steely Dan to bring the bass up to where I think it sounds good. Then I start mixing my stuff. Its sort of low tech but gets the job done. The mixes have improved to where they sound pretty good no matter where you play it.

I like it real as well, although I must admit to enjoying my paradigm subwoofer. Not shaking the house apart, but when I experimented with some very small Boston Acoustic speakers a few years ago, the sub just added some of the bottom end that they required.

I stand by those BA speakers as the best I've ever owned. Surprisingly, and most welcome is the fact that they were not overly expensive, especially compared with some of the beasts I owned by in the day.

That hits the nail on the head for my taste. Just say....no..... to home eq's and booming speakers. I want to hear it the way the artist intended it to sound. While all my other electronics are new I will not let go of my 25 year old jbl studio monitors
