Heart and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are among the acts nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

The list of 15 potential inductees put forward Tuesday by the Cleveland-based Hall of Fame is unusually strong on women who rock.

American-born sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson formed Heart in Vancouver in the 1970s and had enduring hits with Magic Man and Barracuda.

Jett, who created rock anthem I Love Rock 'n Roll, is a first-time nominee. Her leather-clad persona, formerly with the Runaways, is an icon for women rockers. The Blackhearts was formed in 1982.

Also nominated:

 a.. Beastie Boys
 b.. The Cure
 c.. Donovan
 d.. Eric B. & Rakim
 e.. Guns 'N Roses
 f.. Freddie King
 g.. Laura Nyro
 h.. Red Hot Chili Peppers
 i.. Rufus with Chaka Khan
 j.. The Small Faces/The Faces
 k.. The Spinners
 l.. Donna Summer
 m.. War
The Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donna Summer, Laura Nyro, Donovan and War have all been nominated before, but not made it to the final list.

Guns 'N Roses, the 1980s rockers led by Axl Rose with Slash on lead guitar, are first-time nominees. They sold 100 million albums and had hits such as Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise City.

An act must have released its first single or album 25 years ago to qualify for induction. The final list of inductees is determined by voters.

New members will be inducted at a ceremony at the hall of fame in Cleveland on April 14, 2012.
