Some of the early kazoos used gold beaters skin for the membrane. It is made from steer's intestine. Originally used as the interweaving material for beating gold into fine sheets.
Also used for repairing parchment and vellum as well as other art applications.
If anyone wants to experiment with that material 6" x 22" piece of the 1ply transparent is available from
http://apps.webcreate.com/ecom/catalog/product_specific.cfm?ClientID=15&ProductID=20728
This would be enough for an incredible number of kazoo membranes.
I am thinking of getting some and splitting with others.
