I'll add into this that it also depends when your group shows up. If they're coming a half hour before the gates open, people are going to get pissed. If they're coming at 9 a.m. and putting their time in the line, I'd expect that people would be more forgiving.
It's just not cool no matter which way you slice it, though. If they want a great spot on the field, they should come and put in the time on the sidewalk just like everyone else. If they're not willing to get there early, then allow the people who will put in the time and do care to get better spots.

Sometimes...I've seen it done and I've seen other people get upset. Depends
on the crowd that day.
Also depends on the number of people. If it were me and 2-3 people latch on
to a group in front of me, then no big deal.
If it's some large group like 5 or more...I might get a little pissed.
