Re: [Classic_Rock_Forever] Why do pop-culture fans stop caring about new music as they get older?

Oh I know, its been beat up before here.

I'm currently working with some 30 somethings who came of age musically after the 80's, which is a new experience for me. As usual, they are most comfortable with what they started out listening to. The interesting bit is that their disdain for the 80's eclipses mine quite handily. Its all in good fun, but I'm more than happy to poke at the 90's as well as the 80's, just to get a rise out of someone.
Honestly, this groups 'seems' to know their music better though. Not just the grunge rockers, either. Lots of Radiohead and Tool talk, so visual image of the artist is not a focus whatsoever. The albums seem to have importance to these guys.

Well Clint you know how I feel about this. I dont feel like most of the modern rock bands can play nearly as well as the classic artists. I know there will be intense debate, and some of you can point to all kinds of modern bands where they are good players, but, I see things like Arctic Monkeys, White Stripes, Kings of Leon, even Queens of the Stone Age, and all I hear is mediocre and worse musical ability. It just doesnt do it for me.

A lot of it is backlash, surely, the 80s hairmetal people took music ability to an almost Olympic level of competition.

It could also be that old farts like me simply cant relate to the new stuff, for example, I loathe rap, and it seems to be an almost invasive movement into rock. Probably a natural tendecy for a lot of people to give up on modern stuff and start looking farther backwards.
