Sounds like things have not changed much. I've seen Bob five times now (4 of them in the last 12 years or so) and he still does the same thing on the oldies. The newer songs are easier to pick out right away, but with a lot of the old stuff you are listening for a lyric that you recognize and then you have that 'Holy crap, it's Shelter From the Storm!' moment.
I totally dig it, but walking out with the crowd there are always a lot of folks who aren't impressed.

the only tour I ever saw was in the late 70s, when he started going against his own "conventional" production... He played a strat the whole time, and changed up the music AND the vocal melody to every song. So he was playing all his old songs that were favorites, but because of the shitty arena sound, nobody could understand a word, so, everybody thought he was playing a bunch of new work, nobody recognized a thing.
I figured out what he was doing here and there, and I dug it, but, few others did.
