arguably Chet Atkins, who was huge; Hank Marvin, James Burton, Eddie Cochran, Scottie Moore, Link wray and Duane Eddy, all those guys were enormously influential onto the crop of guitar players who later came to fame in the 60s and 70s. Berry, sure, is a giant. but not the only one. It was obviously a mix. Otherwsie everybody in the 70s would sound just like ChuckBerry.

Iommi didnt really come on the scene until 1970 or so. Even before him, ask Jimmy Page, the guy who got the whole "les paul+Marshall" amp sound was none other than Eric Clapton, in about 1966, the Beano album
and before that you had Dave Davies slitting the speaker on his amp to get arguably the first "power chord distortion" on You Really Got Me, about 1964.
there are guys within the old Yardbirds camp that claim half of what Hendrix did, he stole from Jeff Beck; ie Hendrix's use of the early Mayer fuzzboxes, Dallas Rangemasters, Arbiters, etc
You can also take into account townshend and entwistles relationship with amp maker Jim Marshall and his early shop, about 1965 or 66. those guys together all invented the 4x12 amp stack, which had an enormous effect on the overall guitar community
so, see, what you are saying, isnt exactly supported by historical chronology of the "development" of "the rock and roll sound"
the point is, by 1969, you already had all kinds of guys stacking up cabinets and running trebleboosters as preamps to do exactly what Iommi did a couple of years later.

and sometimes personal preference is just somebody saying "I like this" without really knowing why or much about the subject, and theres nothing wrong with that.. unless you're selling that opinion and you want people to buy it.
