In his ongoing column in England's Sunday Times in which he offers medical advice, legendary heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne writes, "Christmas should be banned. Full stop. Although when I was drinking, I thought it was great, 'cos it was the perfect excuse to get blasted... Now I can't stand any of it.
"All this '10 more shopping days to go' bullocks is such a wind-up. I ain't exactly Mr. Holy, but what's that got to do with Baby Jesus being born?... The faster we get to New Year's Day 2011, the better."
Ozzy Osbourne will publish a new book called "Ask Dr. Ozzy" next year. The book will be co-written with Chris Ayres, who collaborated with Ozzy on his memoir "I Am Ozzy", and is a spin-off of the singer's column in Sunday Times.
According to the publisher, the book will "tell incredible survival stories not found in his memoir, offer advice that no human should follow, and shed light on his seemingly superhuman ability to keep breathing." An October 2011 release is expected.
Osbourne's 2011 dates get underway January 12 in Minneapolis. The six-week 2011 trek will include a pair of intimate shows: January 26 at the Dodge Theater in Phoenix and February 1 at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. Ozzy's longtime friend and musical collaborator Slash will open all the concerts on the second leg.
Legendary progressive rock veterans URIAH HEEP have entered Liscombe Park Studios in Buckinghamshire, England to begin recording their next album of all-new material for a 2011 release.
URIAH HEEP recently announced plans to release a new live album, "Official Bootleg Volume II – Live in Budapest, Hungary 2010", containing recordings from the band's May 4, 2010 concert at the Petofi Hall in Budapest Hungary. The band said, "There are going to be many more recordings from around the world, as this will be an ongoing series, giving fans the chance to hear the band in many different countries.
"These recordings are true official bootlegs in every sense and they reflect that nights performance as it happened, totally untouched. You can almost feel that you are at the concert, so put the CD on, turn it up loud, close your eyes and enjoy a night in Budapest with URIAH HEEP."
"Celebration", the latest album from URIAH HEEP, was released in North America on March 16, 2010 via a new deal between DisManic Distribution and Knife Fight Media.
HEEP history has been an extraordinary journey and it was time that their greatest classics were recorded in studio by the lineup playing them live to fans all over the world for more than 20 years.
For "Celebration", the band re-recorded twelve of their most successful songs — classics like "Free Me", "Gypsy", "The Wizard", "Easy Livin'", and, of course, their all-time smash hit "Lady in Black". In addition to that, they composed and recorded two completely new songs as a special gift to their fans: "Only Human" and "Corridors of Madness", two of their best tracks in years.
Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister – better known as just Lemmy – is
65 today. A new documentary film about him features Dave Grohl, Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, Johnny Knoxville and Jarvis Cocker. Motörhead also
have a new album out on January 17.
Happy 65th birthday. How are you celebrating?
I'm not. Celebrate being 65? Not me.
You're known for your steady diet of Jack Daniel's and Marlboro cigarettes. What kind of shape are you in?
I know. It's amazing really. I've never done a day's exercise in my life. I get a good workout onstage, I suppose.
Has a doctor looked at your liver lately?
Yeah, he said I had the liver of a newborn child.
Are you in bed after shows now or do the band still like a good party?
You don't get a good party after the show usually because we're working. We're probably on the bus and on the way to the next show. If you drive at night, there's no traffic – you get there a lot quicker. For a couple of hours after the show, we hang out. We get less female visitors than we used to.
You worked as Jimi Hendrix's roadie. Did you learn from watching him?
I learned you can do anything onstage as long as you can carry it off, as long as you can back it up. You can do anything. You've never seen anything like it in your whole life. If you want to see a small taste of what he was like, Monterey Pop Music Festival is the one to watch.
Is it flattering to have such a big range of people, from Ozzy Osbourne to Jarvis Cocker, praising you?
Of course it's flattering. People keep saying they're surprised by that. They say they're surprised if we do a slow song. Everyone's always surprised and analysing. Everybody's always surprised by something. It kills me. We've done tracks with no drums or guitars on them. We've done tracks with cellos and violas on them. We've done all kinds of stuff.
Everyone in the film says you're the definition of rock 'n' roll. How do you define rock 'n' roll?
Rock 'n' roll is rock 'n' roll – it speaks for itself. You hear it and you know it, whether it is or not. It's quite simple. It means 'f*** you' – that's the attitude of rock 'n' roll. It's about music that makes you 10ft tall and immortal.
Do you hope the film clears up a few myths and rumours about you?
Oh, I don't care. You know, I've been dead twice. A French magazine published my obituary.
Did they say anything nice?
I don't know. It was in French.
You collect Nazi memorabilia. Why?
Because I like it. I don't like the ideas – I just collect the stuff.
A lot of people might assume if someone collects Nazi memorabilia they're into far-right ideas.
My deeds have spoken enough for my beliefs. My girlfriend's black. I'm the worst Nazi you've ever seen.
What kind of things are you writing about on the new album?
I don't have issues. When I was younger, we didn't have issues – we had problems. I still have problems. Everybody's drowning for want of a decent wage. There are problems there. Same old, same old.
You're a famous, wealthy rock star – are you still bothered about that kind of stuff?
I'm famous; I'm not wealthy. I really don't care about politics. It takes up too much time. And there's always misery. Every politician is an a***hole. Sorry about that but they are. Everybody from Hitler to Stalin and back – all of them. To want to be a politician, you've got to be an a***hole.
What's still left for Motörhead to do?
We've never played China or India or Africa. I'd like to do those before I drop.
How do you think you'd go down in China?
I have no idea. All I know about it is the bloody economy out there. I see it on TV all the time but I've no idea what the kids are like out there. I'd like to give it a shot.
Lemmy is out on DVD (eOne) on January 24. Motörhead's new album, The Wörld Is Yours, is out January 17.
For the readers living under a rock. Can you introduce yourself?
Hello! I'm Ron Thal, aka 'Bumblefoot' (named after my solo band) Been releasing experimental punky guitar-oriented hard rock music for 20 years on my own, then crossed paths with Axl & band in 2004, joined with them in 2006. Started making music when I was six years old - 35 years later, I'm a guitarist, singer (& bassist), recording artist, years of touring with my own band and others, producer & engineer, songwriter for TV, video games & other artists, teacher, guitarist in Guns N' Roses, and still a workaholic.
You keep the fans updated about your new album through Twitter and Facebook. Can you tell us more about the new upcoming solo- album?
I'm not gonna do an album. It's a big investment of time, and I don't have time. It's the big ongoing battle in my life, finding time for everything and everyone. So I'm gonna take it a song-at-a-time, and release each digitally. I'd rather keep releases at a steady simmer than wait for a big pot to boil every few years, know what I mean? We have the technology to do it this way now, wanna give it a try...
This year Ron's Beard came alive on Twitter and Facebook, and became a instant cult-hit! Will he be a part of your new record too?
(Whispering...) The beard – it's evil. And it's grown. A lot. Best not to wake it or mention it...
I have seen you do a voice recording for the single "Invisible" when can we hear the full song?
'Invisible', yes! Next song I'm puttin' out. When I get back from the GNR tour I'm going to take care of the final touches and release it. We're in Abu Dhabi this week, gettin' home before Christmas. Will keep everyone posted and updated...
Will Dennis "The Dutch Dude" again play the drums on the next record?
Absolutely. And awesomely. He'll be on these next songs comin' out.
You come over as a very social guy. You always got time for fans and often play with them outside the hotel. Is it hard to keep being that way. Now that you are in the famous rock-band Guns N' Roses?
Playing in GNR, I have more of an opportunity to do things like this, it's been good. It always happens spontaneously, fans outside a hotel, I'm walking in with a guitar, or they have one, we're talking for a while, next thing ya know we're all singin' and playin'. It's nice. It's why I'm here. On Earth, I mean.
You've seen a lot of the world now and you have been with Guns N' Roses recently in Holland are there any fun moments you wish to share with our readers?
What happens in Holland stays in Holland. Haha... fun happens everywhere, but just normal life stuff, nothing unusual.
Being away from home for such a long time must be a hard thing to do. How do you keep up the good spirit and continue being on the road for that time?
My wife visits a lot – we get to see the world together, it's great. I think Skype keeps everyone sane, fathers getting to see their families. There's a lot of band and crew walking around with laptops in front of their faces, talking to it, everyone waving to each other through the screen as they walk by...
What is the most intense moment in your career so far?
When a tornado tore down the stage in Rio early this year, right before doors opened. Crew was pretty bruised up, and if the audience was there, we would have had a lot of deaths.
You are a "monster" on guitar, who easily throw out the most mean and difficult riffs, where did you learn to play like this?
Just happens over time, experiencing life in and out of music... that's the key to it all, live your life to the fullest, and tell the stories with your songs.
If you had to name one inspiration for your musical career, who would that be and why?
There's a lot – Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Angus Young, Ace Frehley, but I'd have to say George Martin. He was the Beatles' producer, a classical musician, he added the instrumentation and depth to their songs - and that's the part I love the most within the songs I love the most.
You are co – founder of the indie label "Bald Freak " Why did you start your own indie-label?
I want to own and control my own music. My first two albums were out-of-print since the late 90s, nobody could get them, not even me. It was heartbreaking, I wasn't going to let that happen ever again.
You worked as teacher on an University in the USA , don't you miss teaching?
Very much. Was teaching music production at SUNY Purchase College, right above NYC... I miss everyone there a lot, I miss teaching a lot. In the last few years I've been living out of a suitcase, traveling the world, connecting with great audiences, but touring puts a halt on recording, teaching, everything else. When the touring slows down, I'd love to get back to teaching.
You performed as a guest on many records, is there still an artist you wish to collaborate with?
Other than the people I'm already workin' with, hmmm... for me it's about anyone who's a cool person and doing something interesting musically. Because time is limited, I'm forced to be choosy about what I take on... would love to do something with John Sykes – we spent some time together last year jamming, and the dude's so fucking good, so inspiring.
Besides making good solo-records, you also are one of the lead-guitarist in Guns N' Roses. Is it hard to combine your solo-work with being in Guns N' Roses?
Yes, the more we tour the less time there is for everything else. The last thing I did was put out my own 'Abnormal' album and acoustic 'Barefoot' album in 2008, while GNR's 'Chinese Democracy' was in its final stages to be released. I spent most of 2009 living out of a hotel room in LA, prepping with GNR for this past year of touring – took a break over that summer and wrote & recorded a batch of my own music, toured with Lita Ford for a few months, then got back to bizz with GNR, hit the road end of '09 and have been touring since. On breaks in-between legs of the tour I'd try to knock out whatever I could – my first album was re-released by the label that owned it and I transcribed & released a 200-page TAB book of the album, I laid some guest solos, started laying vocals to the '09 songs I wrote ('Invisible' will be the first of them...), did a song for a 'Rock Band' style video game of rock versions of Chopin's music, mixed Return To Earth's new
album 'Automata' (Metal Blade Records), mixed and mastered some other demos and albums, did work with some charities as well... just a big race against the clock all the time. I'm getting' things done, but I definitely feel the constant impending 'To Do' list hovering over my head at all times, and scramble to knock down the list every free chance I get....
You are a food-addict especially when it's spicy, What's been the best meal you eaten this tour ?
Been so many great meals, great restaurants – one that stands out is Roka in London – best cod fish I ever tasted...
The Guns N' Roses world tour recently will come to an end. What's the next project you will focus on?
Don't know what comes next, can't predict. Ya know, 'We make plans, and God laughs...' GNR has some tentative touring plans, will have to see what comes of it – if not that, will keep putting out my own music, would love to get back to producing bands and teaching, and maybe finally making that instructional DVD that's been on the ol' list for a decade....
Thanks for this interview.
I got one final question, is there anything you wish to share with our readers?
Thank you for the interview! Thanks to all for reading... and Happy Holidays! Hope to see you all in 2011!
ICED EARTH's long-awaited live DVD extravaganza, "Festivals Of The Wicked", has a running time of nearly six hours — containing three full headliner shows (over 40 live tracks!), a photo gallery shot by famed rock photographer Ross Halfin, plus a 90-minute documentary. The DVD cover art features ICED EARTH "mascot" Set Abominae emerging from the fires of Hell, riffing on a Les Paul. It will be released in early 2011.
I recently had the chance to speak with Chuck Billy, the lead singer from Testament. Testament recently concluded two years of world-wide touring in support of their award winning album, "The Formation of Damnation". The most recent leg of their tour was as part of American Carnage, with Megadeth and Slayer.
Hi Chuck, this is Glen Medley from MisForMusic.com. How's it going today?
Oh pretty good. How are you doing?
Excellent, thank you. I appreciate you taking time out of out of your busy schedule to talk to me today.
Yeah, no problem.
I'd like to start off by talking about Dimebash 2010 where you recently performed. This was a concert that was held in honor of the late, Dimebag Darrell, to benefit the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. What was it like being there?
It was awesome! It was a cool event with an all-star lineup of people and people showing up at the last minute like Lemmy and Phil Campbell. The guys from Alice in Chains just showed up to play. It was really, really, really cool. Everybody kicked ass! It was a little bit challenging for me because at first I was just gonna do one song. Then one song turned into five songs, so I had to cram learning five songs in three days. When all was said and done, I pulled it off and it sounded awesome.
I saw the video of you singing Slayer's "Raining Blood" and you pulled it off well. It sounded great and it looked like it was fun for everyone.
Thanks. It was a lot of fun.
I had the chance to see the American Carnage tour in Phoenix and Testament's performance was phenomenal. What are some of your personal highlights from that tour?
Every day was a highlight. It was such a good tour. All of us have been long-time friends and it wasn't like any attitudes or any turmoil. It was just a really cool tour every day in and day out. The shows were awesome. Everybody was on their game and that's what it was about; everybody brought their A-Game to that show. You saw it, everybody had a good time, good show. It wasn't like an opening act and two headliners. It was like all of us were bringin' it.
It was very enjoyable for the fans, and I'm sure you guys had a good time too.
Oh totally. Having the opportunity to do that just added another dimension to the band's live performance. It definitely enhanced it.
In early 2010, Testament hit the road with Exodus and Megadeth and played the album, "The Legacy" in its entirety. How cool was it to play that classic album from start to finish?
It was very cool. It's kinda not like something that unless you're asked, that you would do. I don't think that any of us would say, "Hey, let's play that record." We did it before in Europe a couple times. We played "The Legacy" and "The New Order" back-to-back. We knew how much fun we had with it, so when we were asked to play "The Legacy" on that tour, we said, "That's fine, we only have a forty minute set time and the record is forty minutes. That's perfect so let's do it." It really brought back old memories. There are some songs that we haven't played for a long time. By the end of the tour, we really had the set down. That was cool; those are fun songs to play. It definitely gives a different feel to what you do in a live performance.
I caught that show in Tucson in March and Alex Skolnick wasn't able to perform that night. Was that due to a scheduling issue?
Yeah. Originally we were supposed to do American Carnage starting in January, and when that fell through, they put the other tour together, but Alex already had other commitments. He was out doing the Rodrigo y Gabriela tour with his Trio (The Alex Skolnick Trio), which was already planned and booked, so there was no way he could bail on that. Glen Drover has been there for us. He did a great job filling in.
Yeah, Glen just plugged right into that spot like he knew the songs already.
Oh, he does. He comes well-rehearsed. He comes to our rehearsals with us; he's on top of it.
In 2008, I had the chance to see Testament play two consecutive nights. The first night was supporting the Masters of Metal tour with Judas Priest and Heaven and Hell in Phoenix in front of 20,000 screaming fans. The next night, Testament headlined a show at the historic Rialto Theatre in Tucson, which is a much smaller venue that holds about 1000 people. What is it like to switch gears from a larger venue to a more private venue from one night to the next?
It's definitely a big contrast. During a big-stage show, you can't connect with the crowd like you can in a club show. Usually there's more lights and everything, and there's a spotlight, so you can't see anything. You're behind the monitor line performing. When you're at a club, for me, I clear the front edge of the stage. I don't like the monitors up front. I like it when I can get right up to the edge, just an arms-reach from the people. I actually don't mind it when people come up and stage dive, just as long as they're not thrashing the gear or disrupting the performance. The big shows are consistent every night. You go the small clubs and you're using a different sound system every night and it's inconsistent from night-to-night, so it has its plusses and minuses in all areas. Production is plus or minus and performance is plus or minus.
Every time I have seen Testament perform live, you guys look like you're having a lot of fun. How rewarding is it for you to perform in front of your fans?
Well, back in 2001 and 2002 when I had cancer and I was bald headed, I thought that I might lose my career to that. That was about it. Now here I am in 2010 and we're rockin' and we've made a couple great records. It's like "Wow", the opportunity is here. I'm going to enjoy every minute of it, that's for sure. All of us are trying not to be too serious about it but just enjoying it.
It really shows too. I think that everyone in the crowd is having a really good time and that stems from you guys being up there having so much fun and passing it along.
Cool! That's what it's about.
Now that the American Carnage tour has concluded, will you will be heading into the studio to begin record your tenth studio album? What can you tell me about the forthcoming album?
We're working on it right now. We're still in the writing process. It's gonna be what it's gonna be. We definitely want it in the root and in the vein of the last record. We felt very positive about the last record. If we can just write ten more songs as if we were writing "The Formation of Damnation" still. I would love to put some more elements of blast beat drumming in the new stuff, like in "The Gathering".
Are you going to work with Andy Sneap again during the production?
Yes, we will.
It's a recipe that seems to work well for you guys.
Yeah, we work well with him. He knows the music and he knows us, so it works out.
"The Formation of Damnation" won the Best Album award at Metal Hammer's Golden Gods Awards ceremony in 2008. Does that make you feel any kind of pressure during the song-writing process for the follow-up album?
No, not really. For us, when we got that award, it wasn't like, "All right." It was like, "Fuck yeah! It's about time God-dammit!" So it's not like that. We're not thinking about that. We just try to keep the same mindset and just keep rockin' and keep writing good Metal.
I think it's a sign of the times when TV channels like VH1 Classic are occasionally playing the metal bands that I grew up listening to in the '80s. In what ways do you see times are changing regarding metal?
Well, for me because I lived the fallout of it in the early '90s, I think it's come full circle again. It's the strongest that it has been in a long time right now. You have to figure that twenty-something years ago, Thrash style, there was limited bands around the world playing that, whereas today, it's everywhere. In every country, there's all forms of metal and the Thrash style is everywhere. It's come full-circle right now I believe; it's pretty healthy. And I think for us from where we stood, from the brink of the band and the fall of Metal in the early '90s to deciding to just keep forging ahead and writing heavier records than we did like stuff from "The Ritual" onward. That's what we're about. Now here we are, the full-circle cycle is here and we put out "Formation" and we're still writing hard music. It's kind of cool seeing how strong it was from the early '80s to the early '90s to being strong again
here now.
Yeah, definitely, Metal is as strong right now as it has ever been.
Yeah, and that's good. Look at the Bay area. Forbidden has a new record. Death Angel and Exodus are kicking ass! It's kind of sparked us all back up here in the Bay. It's kind of like, fuck yeah!
I was watching "That Metal Show" recently, and they asked the question that if The Big 4 had room for one more band, who would it be? The co-winners in that debate were Testament and Exodus. Obviously, that's very high praise. How big of an impact do you feel that Testament has made on music over the years?
I definitely feel that Testament has had their own sound and style. From back in '83, when Eric and them started writing some of these songs; I definitely feel that Alex and Eric's guitar style is part of it. And for me, when I got into the band, Alex was 16 years old and writing songs like "The Haunting" and "First Strike Is Deadly". To me it was like, holy shit, how is this kid writing this stuff? To me it was always them and their chemistry as songwriters. I think that in over twenty-five plus years, I hear it out there in other bands and other styles and that's definitely part of it.
In 2006, you sang dual vocals alongside Steve Souza in the band Dublin Death Patrol. Can you please tell me how that band was formed?
It was basically that we all grew up in the town of Dublin, California. It started off as just some drunk, jibberish talk at a high school reunion. We were talking about getting together with some friends and rehashing some of the old tunes that we wrote as kids. So that's what the plan was and a couple phone calls led to a get-together and a practice. The next thing you know, a lot of people started coming out of the woodwork and we made it that you had to be from Dublin to be in the band. The next thing you know, we had about 13 or 14 people calling, wanting to be on the record. We had fun. We had eight people on the stage when we played live, I think three or four guitar players, two bass players, one drummer but we had two drummers on the record. It's a good time when we get together. It's only really about talking about the good ol' times, kinda getting together and unleashing everybody. All the other guys have families and jobs
and so for them to get together and play music and have fun and bullshit is awesome! We actually went to Europe in 2008 and played a couple festivals out there. A couple of the guys have never toured before in their life and never been to Europe and them playing the festival with 45,000 people at these shows. We played right before Heaven and Hell. It was awesome! For me, doing stuff like that and seeing the looks on their faces getting to experience what I've been doing my whole life was so cool.
"Mentally Unstable" is my favorite song from the "DDP 4 Life" album. Do you have a favorite song from that album?
My favorite song from that album is "Pigs in the Hollow".
Please tell me about 70,000 tons of Metal and how Testament got involved with it.
Really, it's as simple as we were approached with an opportunity to play live on a cruise ship with a bunch of Metal bands for a bunch of Metal fans. It sounded really cool so we decided to participate in it.
I hope it turns out as cool as it sounds.
Thank you, I hope so too.
Well, Chuck, thank you for taking the time to talk with me today. I look forward to Testament's forthcoming album and seeing you on tour again.
It's been my pleasure.
STRATOVARIUS' German drummer Jörg Michael, who was was recently diagnosed with cancer and had his entire thyroid removed, has issued the following update:
"I hope this message finds everybody well and everybody is in an easy-peasy Christmas mood already.
"The first leg of the European tour with HELLOWEEN is over — time to have a few words with you.
"First of all, let's not forget the brilliant emergency rescue action and playing of Alex [Landenburg; AT VANCE, ANNIHILATOR, MEKONG DELTA]. Thanks again for all what you did for the fans, the band and also for me.
"Surely I hate the idea of somebody is sitting on 'my chair,' but this special action needed some special treatment and I am proud and happy that it was you, Alex. Thanks again; we'll get together for a real drink, not like these other Scandinavian pussies in the band :-)
"I was overwhelmed by all the wishes, tons of emails and text messages I received from all over the world wishing me a speedy recovery. Thank you so much for supporting me, and it made me feel very strong when fighting these bastards inside of me.
"I have some good news to tell you and believe me — I really enjoy to tell the world:
"The surgery was done about six weeks ago and the first therapy is done as well. All looks good so far and as Jens [Johansson, STRATOVARIUS keyboardist] told me before: 'Do not worry, Jörg, nothing survives in your body after all what you did to it!'
"Finally he was right, there are only small bits and bobs left — I will fight those with another therapy in about four months' time.
"I think I have been very lucky that it was discovered by one of my friends in a very early state. Very good that my friend decided to become a doctor; he was very lousy when he tried playing the guitar.
"Besides preparing myself for Christmas, I am currently practicing the drums to be ready and kickin' again when the tour continues in the New Year. I will be back.
"Thanks again for everything and let's get alive and kicking once again.
"See you in Paris and everywhere else."
STRATOVARIUS will release its thirteenth full-length studio album, "Elysium", in Asia on January 12, 2011 via JVC and in the rest of the world on January 14, 2011 through earMUSIC/Edel.
Alex Landenburg (AT VANCE, ANNIHILATOR, MEKONG DELTA), who just completed a European tour as the stand-in drummer for STRATOVARIUS after the band's regular drummer, Jörg Michael, was diagnosed with cancer and had his entire thyroid removed, has issued the following update:
"I'd like to take the opportunity to say thanks to Jörg for asking me to step in and to the wonderful STRATOVARIUS fans for accepting me with open arms in this difficult situation.
"Despite these sad circumstances that led to me doing this tour, I had a lot of fun still.
"It was a weird situation....sometimes I almost felt a bit guilty for having such a great time. However, from meeting Jörg right before the tour and seeing that he was doing considerably good already, I knew that he'd back soon and that made things easier right away.
"My most heartfelt thank you goes out to Timo, Jens, Mati and last but definitely not least my clone brother Lauri... my bandmates of five weeks!
"I had such a great time with you, guys... I'm happy things went as good as they did and I'm glad to call each of you a friend.
"It's not about touring... it's about having fun — while you're touring!
"Finally I wanna thank the 'rest' of the whole tour party....crew, drivers and last but not least the HELLOWEEN guys. What a bunch of cool and down-to-earth people!"
STRATOVARIUS's thirteenth full-length studio album, "Elysium", will be released in Asia on January 12, 2011 via JVC and in the rest of the world on January 14, 2011 through earMUSIC/Edel.
Southern California's heavy fuzz rock legends FU MANCHU will celebrate the 15th anniversary of their major label debut, "In Search Of…" The hardworking group will be undertaking a headlining tour with a set comprised of the entire album from start to finish. Many of these songs will be performed live for the first time ever.
On March 1, FU MANCHU will make "In Search Of…" available as a 180-gram vinyl reissue on the band's own At The Dojo Records worldwide. The band will also be selling the reissue at these shows as well as on CD. On March 2, FU MANCHU will launch its European trek in the U.K. A full listing of the 26-city, 13-country, four-week tour can be seen on the poster below.
Recorded at Grandmaster Studios in Hollywood, California by the band and Brian Jenkins (KYUSS, SCREAMING TREES) and mastered by Eddy Schreyer (SLAYER, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, BAD RELIGION, ALICE IN CHAINS), "In Search Of…" was the band's first effort for Mammoth Records. This 12-track collection is considered a classic of the '90s and a pillar for the "stoner rock" movement. Highlights include the lead single "Asphalt Risin'", "Redline" and fan favorite "Cyclone Launch".
Originally formed in 1985 as a BLACK FLAG-influenced hardcore punk band called VIRULENCE, FU MANCHU has since become one of hard rock's most celebrated names. The band released its first single, "Kept Between Trees", in 1990 and in the years following, helped give rise to a celebrated style of heavy music tagged "stoner rock" alongside peers such as KYUSS, MONSTER MAGNET and SLEEP. Since its inception, the quartet has built itself a fanatical army of loyal enthusiasts all drawn to the group's ridiculously catchy, unpretentious music, guitar-driven sound and carefree lyrics centered on "old muscle cars, choppers, vans, skateboarding and science fiction."
"I can't believe that it has been 15 years since we recorded 'In Search Of...'," states FU MANCHU vocalist/guitarist Scott Hill. "We are stoked to be playing these tunes for the fans and will be doing a few of them for the first time ever and maybe the last."
The band intends to replicate the classic album experience in upcoming tours with subsequent albums and their companion vinyl reissues. FU MANCHU will also tour the U.S. for "In Search Of…15 Years" later in 2011. Details are expected to be announced in the near future.
In addition to Hill, FU MANCHU features guitarist Bob Balch, bassist Brad Davis and drummer Scott Reeder.

Legendary rocker Sammy Hagar will release his autobiography, titled "Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock", on March 15, 2011 via It Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. Check out the cover below.
"The book's basically done, but the editors want me to go deeper in a couple of areas," Hagar told the Marin Independent Journal last month. "They said, 'There were problems in VAN HALEN? Well, what kind of problems?' The way I've written this book is that I'm just telling the stories, from childhood until now. It's humorous in places, there are sad things, inspirational things."
According to Sammy, his book won't pull any punches.
"It's sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll, tequila and success and cars and money and fame and fortune," he said. "I've gone over the top. It really is crazy. I was shocked when I read my own book. It floored me. I said, 'Wow, what a guy.' I've had the most complete friggin' life on the planet. I can imagine people thinking this guy couldn't have done all that in one lifetime. But I've been a busy boy."
Hagar, the multi-platinum Red Rocker, is best known as the bombastic frontman of VAN HALEN, one of the biggest-selling rock groups in history, and the lead singer of the hard rock group CHICKENFOOT.
"Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock" was acquired by Lisa Sharkey, Senior Vice President and Director of Creative Development for HarperCollins from Frank Weimann, President of The Literary Group International. Senior Editor Matt Harper will edit the book.
Hagar will provide readers with incredible behind-the-scenes stories from his multi-platinum career, including his rise as a solo artist and his eleven years with VAN HALEN, after the controversial departure of original lead vocalist David Lee Roth. During Hagar's time with VAN HALEN, the band released four consecutive No. 1 albums. From worldwide stadium concerts tours to private jets, Hagar enjoyed the trappings of fame and success with VAN HALEN until he was, as he puts it, "unceremoniously fired." Hagar later thrived as a solo act, leading his band, the CABO WABOS, before returning triumphantly to VAN HALEN for an historic reunion tour after which he set off on his own once again.
Honest and compelling, Hagar's account spares no one, least of all himself. Hagar's autobiography reveals the inside story of one of rock music's most recognizable voices, from his humble beginnings in the town of Fontana, California, to his incredible business success with Cabo Wabo Tequila and the Cabo Wabo Cantinas. The book is being co-authored by Joel Selvin, longtime pop music writer for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Wacken Open Air was first held in 1990 as a small event for local German bands. By 1998 the event had become the major festival on the European metal calendar and has included over 70 bands from all over Europe, North America and Australia.
Wacken Open Air is usually held at the beginning of August and lasts three days, during which the festival-goers camp on several large camping grounds surrounding the actual festival area. The 70 or more bands perform across four separate stages over the course of the event.
The 2009 edition of Wacken Open Air set a sales record; it sold out on December 30, 2008. All 70,000 tickets were sold over 200 days before the start of the festival.
Wacken Open Air, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, was honored with a Live Entertainment Award in 2008 in the "Festival Of The Year" category. This award recognizes distinguished achievements in live entertainment and is given out by Live Entertainment Award (LEA) committee.
After touring all over Europe supporting W.A.S.P. on the second leg of "The Return to Babylon 2010 Tour", Brazilian female-fronted metallers SHADOWSIDE will enter Fredman Studio in Gothenburg, Sweden in January 2011 to begin recording their new album with producer Fredrik Nordström (AT THE GATES, IN FLAMES, DARK TRANQUILLITY, ARCH ENEMY, SOILWORK, BRING ME THE HORIZON).
SHADOWSIDE currently consists of Dani Nolden (vocals), Raphael Mattos (guitarist), Ricardo Piccoli (bass) and Fabio Buitvidas (drums). The band's tour with W.A.S.P lasted nearly two months, hitting such countries as Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania and Estonia.
SHADOWSIDE recently inked a deal with SHP Records for the North American release of the "Dare To Dream" album. The deal also includes the worldwide release of the group's next CD.
SHP Records is a new music label and distributor launched by Sean Healy Presents, the dominant local Los Angeles live concert promoter for over 15 years. The label was founded by Sean Healy Presents owner Sean Healy, along with music industry veterans Fred Sherman and Jason Rothberg. SHP Records is run by proven music industry professionals who are combining their skills, knowledge and network of contacts to form a new kind of music label to work in partnership with artists to connect them directly with fans.
"Dare to Dream" was produced and mixed by Dave Schiffman (RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, AUDIOSLAVE, AVENGED SEVENFOLD) and mastered by Howie Weinberg, whose client list includes several gold- and platinum-selling artists, such as AEROSMITH, IRON MAIDEN, METALLICA, PANTERA and RUSH.
"Hideaway", the latest video from SHADOWSIDE, can be viewed below. The clip, which was directed, produced and edited by Luiz Felipe Amorim, was filmed in an abandoned garage in the group's hometown of Santos. It features the band performing as well as lead singer Dani Nolden playing the main character. She says, "[The track deals with] people who are misunderstood, mistreated and put down by society for their whole lives, for the sole reason of being different and unusual. In this case, we portrayed it on a more personal level and showed a teenage girl accused by her mother of painting masks to disrespect her, to be aggressive, while all she wants is to express herself and ends up hiding who she really is."

Austrian symphonic metallers VISIONS OF ATLANTIS will release their fourth album, "Delta", on February 25, 2011 via Napalm Records. The CD was recorded Dreamscape Studios in Munich, Germany and marks the debut of the band's new singer, Maxi Nil, who joined the group last year.
"Delta" track listing:
01. Black River Delta
02. Memento
03. New Dawn
04. Where Daylight Fails
05. Conquest Of Others
06. Twist Of Fate
07. Elegy Of Existence
08. Reflection
09. Sonar
10. Gravitate Towards Fatality
French atmospheric doom metallers IXION have inked a deal with Avantgarde Music for the release of their new album, "To The Void". Due on February 28, 2011, the CD features 10 tracks with a running time of 56 minutes.
"To The Void" track listing:
01. Beyond The Skies
02. The Plague
03. Leaving
04. New Heaven
05. Fear Of The Hidden
06. Rebellion
07. Falling To Apathy
08. Funereal Dance
09. Soothing In Agony
10. Fade To Blue
The song "Beyond The Skies" is available for streaming on the IXON web site along with a medley of tracks that appear on the CD.
Commented the band: "We are very happy about this partnership and to be part of the new era of this well-known label."
Added the label: "In a (current) time when 'doom metal' went all directions outwards (sludge, drone, funeral, stoner, gothic whatever reggae-doom !) from what it once was in the mid-'90s or even a bit earlier than that, we liked IXION's simple yet complex in the same time formula. A formula based on the essential numbers: atmosphere, mood, good musical melodies.
"On their debut album, 'To The Void', IXION will never be that extreme as russian funeral doom undertakers are, and we guarantee they will never be cheesy as female fronted gothic metal bands are and probably not as trendy as today's all presumed sludgy/stony U.S. doom rooted bands are (a.k.a. the post-Southern Lord epidemy). In fact, they essentially are a mid-tempo-paced doom metal band with an Albion '90s imprinting, for all those like us who didn't forget early ANATHEMA and MY DYING BRIDE, with some more actual referrals in the like of Finnish atmoshepric doom metal bands (SHAPE OF DESPAIR, SWALLOW THE SUN, etc.) even though the role of keyboards is quite higher in IXION, taking their sound to maybe a wider, though softer at times, level."
Former THE GATES OF SLUMBER drummer "Iron" Bob Fouts has finished engineering and mixing the debut album from STEEL AGGRESSOR, a "great, brand new thrash/heavy metal band" from Indianapolis, Indiana. Fouts also laid down all the drums on "From Ruins To Dust", which was recorded at his Basement Rage home studio. Bob says, "[The CD] will appeal to every real metalhead in the universe, in my opinion! [It has everything from] super-heavy and raw thrash to powerful, melodic and epic traditional metal. The record has a ton to offer, and it;s real, totally fucking real! No question about it!"
"From Ruins To Dust" is tentatively due in March 2011 via Stormspell Records on both 12-inch vinyl and CD.
STEEL AGGRESSOR's current recording lineup is rounded out by Rick Cope (ex-PHANTOM WITCH) on guitar and vocals and Damon Black on bass.

When Los Angeles media agency Heavy Metal-World (HMW) opened submissions for new artists during the 2010 holiday season, the indie outfit had some very specific goals in mind. Focused on assembling a unique approach by re-engineering the relationship between artist and record label, the company was hell-bent on crafting a common vision for success and set out to find musicians that would understand and share a passion for creativity.
Scouring the earth to find a combination of that kind of character, skill and work ethic sometimes requires looking beyond the norm. It's exactly that type of magnetic synergy which introduced unearthly beings A BAND OF ORCS to HMW's newly formed division, IME Records.
A BAND OF ORCS is literally a big bunch of gruesome, brutal, intimidating Orcs that also happen to be kick-ass musicians. If you're having a hard time digesting this concept, give it some time. But don't take too long or you may just end up the one digested as Orcs have a nasty tendency towards being hungry.
It just so happens they've also developed a strong affection for composing and performing heavy metal music, a combination that only the head-banging population could embrace, encourage and endorse.
Now, some might challenge whether or not non-humans could interact or even exist among our kind. Not only do they exist but they've found a welcome, new home within the cave of Itchy Metal Entertainment, recently joining as the latest signees of the Los Angeles-based record company.
"A BAND OF ORCS delivers the perfect combination of performance and chemistry to our roster of new artists," states Ed Fassio, President of IME Records and VP of A&R for Heavy Metal-World. "Drama, theatrics, characterization and brutality — these are core ingredients we wanted for our label and this band does NOT disappoint. This is skillfully accurate death metal delivered through larger-than-life manifestations: Orcs, heavy metal and pure genius."
As mentioned, the ORCS' musical preference is VERY heavy metal. But one might inquire as to how they acquired this taste. Hence, the official story as told by their manager, Gruesom Grimp:
"In December of 2006, a group of young nerds playing Dungeons & Dragons inadvertently summoned the monstrous Orcs into your realm by rolling dice on a 'Random Encounter Table.' Unfortunately for them, they encountered A BAND OF ORCS, who reacted with all of the inappropriate violence that you might expect from such savage warriors. The Orcs' world changed forever, though, when they heard the demonic sounds of SLAYER coming from downstairs. Enchanted with this new form of noise they forced the amateur guitarist they unearthed there to teach them how they could generate such sounds. They spared his life, and he gave them the materials they needed to make metal into magic."
With critically acclaimed releases such as their debut EP "WarChiefs of the Apocalypse" and their Fuse TV-promoted video "Into the Maelstrom", A BAND OF ORCS has already made significant impact within music, film and radio circles.
Known for their theatrical live performance, the Orcs have also shared stage with Bay Area action-adventure-hardcore legends ARNOCORPS, European death metallers MASTER, Canadian power-houses 3 INCHES OF BLOOD (remember their 2003 epic challenge to all orcdom "Destroy the Orcs"?), as well as nationals DEICIDE and SKINLAB. Venturing outside of metal into the hardcore punk scene, they've also played with BATTALION OF SAINTS in San Diego.
As it states on their official website: "A BAND OF ORCS want nothing less than to become Metal Gods in your puny human realm. As such they crave praise and glory on the road. We would be honored for the opportunity to assault your puny human ear-drums to secure apotheosis for A BAND OF ORCS as deities in the Metalverse."
And Itchy Metal Entertainment is here to help them do just that.

Wisconsin death metallers JUNGLE ROT have recruited 21-year-old Newark, Delaware native Jesse Beahler (HER VIRGIN WOMB, NIGHTFIRE) as their new drummer.

JUNGLE ROT recently completed a North American tour with Metal Blade recording artists LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH and WOE OF TYRANTS.
"Worst Case Scenario", the latest video from JUNGLE ROT, can be viewed below. The clip was directed by Jason Meudt and Emmet Austin of Vision 4 Films and it features crushing old-school death metal, leaving nothing but a blood-soaked battlefield in its wake.
"Worst Case Scenario" comes off JUNGLE ROT's most recent album, "What Horrors Await", which was released in June 2009 via Napalm Records. The CD was recorded at Studio One in Racine, Wisconsin with longtime engineer Chris Djuricic. Artwork for the release was handled by Gyula Havancsák (DESTRUCTION, ANNIHILATOR, GRAVE DIGGER).

The cover for the CD version was created by our favorite Dutch artist Thomas Kynst [see below]."
BLOOD MORTIZED adds: "All material for our upcoming second album has been written. The plan is to start the recording in a quite near future. The title for this sophomore album is 'The Key To A Black Heart'."
