CultureConFlix Screenwriting Lab 2011
Classroom 34's CultureConFilx is a Screenwriters Lab dedicated to the exploration of Culture and Conflict. The goal of CultureConFlix is to use storytelling to change the world. During CultureConFlix, screenwriters work intensively on their screenplays under the guidance of experienced screenwriters, producers, and script consultants. The lab is designed to help screenwriters improve their writing, develop their voices, and take their screenwriting careers to the next level. The three day workshop will take place in October 2011 in Washington, DC.
Why Culture and Conflict?
Ola Taiwo, founder of Classroom 34, believes that independent audiences "love stories of culture" and that we are in an era of "Post-Obama Cinema" where, "cultural fluency" - understanding how culture influences identity, communication, and conflict - will play a major role in independent film for years to come.
The Artist-In-Residence
This year's Artist-In-Residence will be Marilyn Horowitz. Marilyn Horowitz is a NYU professor, writer, producer, writing coach, and script doctor. She won the New York University Award for Teaching Excellence in 2004. Marilyn hosts two seminars per year on the "Creative Business of Screenwriting" for New York Women in Film and Television (NYWIFT). Marilyn was the script consultant and associate producer on The Reawakening, an independent feature film produced under the auspices of the ABC New Talent Development Scholarship Grant.
Marilyn's private writing students have gone on to sell scripts to Miramax, HBO, Hallmark Entertainment, and ABC, as well as gained admittance to the AFI Graduate Writing Program, Sundance Writers Lab, and the IFP Market's No Borders Forum. Marilyn's students have also won the 2002 and 2003 NYWIFT Screenplay Contests, placed highly in the Nicholl Fellowship, and were finalists in the Slamdance Film Festival and Austin Film Festival script competitions.
Marilyn has contributed articles to Screenwriter, Hollywood Scriptwriter, and Script Magazine, and has taught screenwriting seminars for New York Women in Film and Television (NYWIFT), Film/Video Arts, WGA East, Independent Feature Project (IFP), HBO/Montage Entertainment, and the Lake Placid Film Festival. She is also the author of How to Write a Screenplay in Ten Weeks and Pushing the Script Towards Greatness, the workbooks used in her NYU classes.
Each participant will have an opportunity to work one on one with The Artist-In-Residence.
Who Should Apply to the Lab?
Classroom 34 is looking for new screenwriters with ideas for screenplays that examine culture, identity, and conflict. We are seeking:

3. Screenplays with an emphasis on Multicultural Cinema: Stories that focus on the intersection of two or more cultures
4. High Concept: Ideas that deserve to be on the big screen.
5. Narrative screenplays with impact. They could be emotional, humorous or political, or designed to scare an audience.
6. Screenplays that take risks and challenge audiences. Scripts that have something to say.
Classroom 34 champions diversity in independent film. We are very interested in receiving submissions from screenwriters who are Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian, African-American, Bi-racial, Bi-cultural, First Generation American, Immigrants, Latino, Women, over 40, Gay, Lesbian, or Disabled.
