"Soundscape Study 001" was devised as a way of attempting to blur the boundaries between two major reflective elements of the soundscape - that of the listener who exists within and contributes to the soundscape on a continual basis, and that of the visitor, the passing critic who appreciates and contributes only momentarily to the sound world he/she is absorbing.
Just as a classical composer may visit some small corner of the world and return with a symphony, Daniel Alexander Hignell was interested in absorbing, recording and composing with the soundscape of an area, and yet in doing so, attempt to shed his "visiting composer" moniker, and instead listen to the soundscape as a local would - as a durational, emotional, experiential feast of sound that affects every aspect of life within it.
"Soundscape Study 001" was designed as a means to this end - by exploring the soundscapes of two geographically distant villages and by spending an extended period of time in each location, he has attempted to (as much as is possible) understand the soundscapes he encountered, not only as a series of sonic events, but as a sensory whole. By comparing two villages, he has been able to understand better how sound affects those who live it side by side, what non-sonic events affect the interpretation of sound, and attempted to record, collate and re-compose the soundscapes in a manner that is suggestive of the total soundscape therein.
Aware that, by the simple act of recording a sound you are stripping it of its context, these compositions are augmented to offer an interpretive context where the true and whole experiential world has been removed.
