Legendary progressive rock veterans URIAH HEEP have announced plans to release a new live album, "Official Bootleg Volume II – Live in Budapest, Hungary 2010". The band states, "This is an official bootleg recording from our concert in the Petofi Hall, Budapest Hungary, on the 4th May 2010.

"There are going to be many more recordings from around the world, as this will be an ongoing series, giving fans the chance to hear the band in many different countries.

"These recordings are true official bootlegs in every sense and they reflect that nights performance as it happened, totally untouched. You can almost feel that you are at the concert, so put the CD on, turn it up loud, close your eyes and enjoy a night in Budapest with URIAH HEEP."

The official release date for "Official Bootleg Volume II – Live in Budapest, Hungary 2010" has not yet been announced.

"Celebration", the latest album from URIAH HEEP, was released in North America on March 16, 2010 via a new deal between DisManic Distribution and Knife Fight Media.

HEEP history has been an extraordinary journey and it was time that their greatest classics were recorded in studio by the lineup playing them live to fans all over the world for more than 20 years.

For "Celebration", the band re-recorded twelve of their most successful songs — classics like "Free Me", "Gypsy", "The Wizard", "Easy Livin'", and, of course, their all-time smash hit "Lady in Black". In addition to that, they composed and recorded two completely new songs as a special gift to their fans: "Only Human" and "Corridors of Madness", two of their best tracks in years.

URIAH HEEP's progressive heavy metal made the British band one of the most popular hard rock groups of the early '70s. Formed by guitarist Mick Box and vocalist David Byron in the late '60s, URIAH HEEP released their debut album "Very 'eavy... Very 'umble" in 1970. Since then the band has released 21 studio albums and played to millions of fans across the globe.

URIAH HEEP remains one of British rock's most consistent and long-standing acts, with album sales of over 30 million worldwide.

Former Geffen Records executive John Kalodner, who oversaw AEROSMITH's late Eighties comeback and some of their biggest albums, such as "Permanent Vacation" and "Pump", told the New York Post that the band's guitarist, Joe Perry, was "completely wrong" when he stated in a recent interview that singer Steven Tyler would never have pursued a job like being the judge in the next season of "American Idol" during the group's formative years.

Perry told The Calgary Herald on September 7 about "American Idol", "It's a reality show designed to get people to watch that station and sell advertising. It's one step above ['Teenage Mutant'] 'Ninja Turtles' . . . I'll tell you one thing, when we put this band together, this is not something that [Steven Tyler] would do."

Kalodner, who is credited with reuniting the original lineup of AEROSMITH in 1984, told the New York Post that Tyler always "sought Hollywood recognition, and now he can get that."

He added, "Joe is completely wrong. It's jealousy. He's ultra pissed off.

"Simon Cowell was a failed A&R person, a nothing, who is an incredible TV personality. Randy Jackson? The greatest studio musician, but an average A&R guy who became a terrific TV personality. I don't know what will happen because Steven gets his energy from singing in front of 20,000 people. Sitting in a TV studio with scripted sound bites? I'm not sure he'd be able to even use his own great quips. I'll be able to tell you in the first show or two if he'll be his superstar self."

Regarding Perry's claim that AEROSMITH may tour with a different vocalist while Tyler is doing his TV gig, Kalodner said, "If [Steven] makes a giant success as a TV personality he won't want to go back on the road. And there is no AEROSMITH without Steven Tyler. Period."

Perry told The Calgary Herald that he has no idea when fans might get a chance to see the band perform again. Perry said, "Technically speaking, after the gig in Vancouver (on September 16), I don't have a job with AEROSMITH. We know these are the last shows for awhile. And I really do mean awhile. I don't know when we'll be out there again, the five of us, so we'll be playing with everything we've got."

Asked about learning that Tyler had taken the "American Idol" gig, Perry said, "When we decided to do this tour . . . we basically laid out plans for the next two years. And when you're sitting there . . . and one of the band members knows full well he's signed a contract that's taking him out of the music business for up to seven months of the year — that kind of throws a wrench into things."

Tyler, seemingly the center of most of the band's problems over the course of the last year, told The Pulse of Radio that he thinks AEROSMITH is too good a band to let their differences break them apart. "You know, sometimes differences do get in the way, but when we start playing together, it just is the truth of why we were both born and put on this planet," he said. "There's a lot of things that I hate Joe for saying and he hates me for saying, and things we've done back and forth, but this band is a band and married forever. So we may have our differences, but the marriage still holds, especially when there's a stage for us to get up on and rock out on."

According to The Calgary Sun, AEROSMITH and its western Canadian tour promoter have settled their legal differences in advance of the band's Calgary concert Friday night.

AEROSMITH was sued by Keystone Entertainment Inc. of Canada for $6 million over its canceled tour of the country's western provinces in August 2009.

The band was forced to scrap five shows there after singer Steven Tyler was injured in a fall during a concert in South Dakota.

Keystone's suit claimed that AEROSMITH breached its contract with the concert promoter by failing to reschedule the 2009 dates, further alleging that the company is out expenses incurred for promoting and producing the canceled gigs.

According to The Calgary Sun, a "discontinuance of action" filed last week in connection with a $6-million lawsuit launched by Keystone said the case has been settled.

"The plaintiff hereby discontinues its claim against the defendants pursuant to a settlement agreement between the parties without costs," said the document.

According to FIMI (Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana), the Italian branch of the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), IRON MAIDEN's new album, "The Final Frontier", has topped the official Italian chart for the third consecutive week.

As previously reported, "The Final Frontier" has also spent the past three weeks at No. 1 on the Norwegian chart. According to the Norwegian music blog Lydverket, this ties the best chart stretch IRON MAIDEN has enjoyed in any country during the band's 30-year recording career.

Rod Smallwood, IRON MAIDEN's longtime manager, told The New York Times that more than 800,000 copies of "The Final Frontier" had been shipped to retailers around the world by the end of August, with the group having sold about 85 million records in its 30-year career.

"A lot of bands could learn a lot from MAIDEN," Smallwood said. "MAIDEN is essentially about the relationship with the fans, and nothing comes between that. They don't want to be rock stars. They just enjoy playing for the fans."

According to David Kassler, chief operating officer of EMI for Europe, digital tracking services showed only small levels of illegal downloading of "The Final Frontier", whcih is attributable in part to the fact that IRON MAIDEN's songs do not fit the mold of a radio single — three of them, on the newest release, are more than nine minutes long.

"You'd expect some people to be pirating, but they don't," Kassler told The New York Times. "They want the physical album. They love the artwork, the lyrics. It's something they want to show their friends and family."

Two classic DIO tracks — "Holy Diver" and "Stand Up And Shout" — will be made available on September 14 in the Rock Band Music Store of downloadable content for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and Wii.

With more than 400 artists, including JIMI HENDRIX, THE WHO, AC/DC and GREEN DAY, who are exclusive to Rock Band, as well as more than 1,100 songs available through the Rock Band platform and 65 million songs sold through its download store alone, Rock Band is the undisputed sales and content leader in the interactive music space, providing the deepest and best selection of artists, songs and albums. Rock Band DLC additions for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 system and Wii.

Back On Black — the company which specializes in vinyl reissues of classic metal albums and is dedicated to providing top-quality releases for record collectors and metal fans worldwide — released the classic debut album from DIO, "Holy Diver", on 180-gram limited-edition gatefold red vinyl on July 30.

Originally issued on May 25, 1983, "Holy Diver" has been hailed by critics as DIO's best work and a classic staple in the heavy metal genre. The LP was certified gold in the U.S. on September 12, 1984 and platinum on March 21, 1989.

"Holy Diver" re-entered The Billboard 200 chart in late May — shortly after the band's frontman, Ronnie James Dio, died of stomach cancer — at No. 149 and bowed at No. 11 on Pop Catalog (4,000; up 322%). A best-of from DIO, "The Very Beast of Dio", also debuted on Catalog at No. 32 (up 617%).

DIO's "The Very Beast of Dio" was officially certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on March 11, 2009 for shipments in the United States in excess of 500,000 copies.

Issued in October 2000, "The Very Beast of Dio" is the second greatest-hits collection CD — and the first to be released in the U.S. — from the Ronnie James Dio-fronted band.

DIO's last release was the "Holy Diver Live" CD, featuring a performance of the classic "Holy Diver" album in its entirety, from start to finish, recorded live for the very first time in 2005 in front of a sold-out London crowd. It also includes, among others, "Heaven & Hell", "Sign of the Southern Cross" and "Mob Rules" from vocalist Ronnie James Dio's BLACK SABBATH days, "Tarot Woman", "Man on the Silver Mountain" and "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll" from the RAINBOW era and "We Rock" from his solo career.

The two-disc DVD release of the award-winning documentary about legendary Canadian trio RUSH, called "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage", has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments in excess of 100,000 copies. (Note: Due to the fact that the set consists of two discs, it was eligible for platinum certification after shipping 50,000 copies; platinum certification for a single-disc release is 100,000 copies.)

According to Nielsen SoundScan, "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage" has sold around 82,000 copies in the U.S. so far.

Guitarist Alex Lifeson told The Pulse of Radio that it wasn't until he saw the film himself that he thought there was actually an interesting story to tell about the band. "It's just kind of a, you know, a success story — kids from the suburbs have a dream and they live their dream," he said. "And everybody can relate to that. There's been quite a dynamic in the band, a lot of stuff has happened, so there was a story to tell there. And I don't think I really realized there was one until we actually saw a rough cut and how they pieced it all together and the chronology and the ebbs and flows of the story."

RUSH bassist Geddy Lee told RollingStone.com that the band was initially hesitant when approached by filmmakers Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen about making a documentary, saying, "We thought, 'How foolish are these guys?' We're just this dull band. I remember [drummer] Neil [Peart] asked them rather pointedly, 'What's your angle? What's the story you want to tell?' They said, 'Well, to be honest, we don't know.' We liked that and said, 'Good luck, let you know what you want us to do.'"

"Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage" won the Audience Choice Award at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival this past April.

RUSH began a 40-date North American tour on June 29 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The trek features the band's first-ever performance of its 1981 album "Moving Pictures" in its entirety.

The band recently released two new tracks, "Caravan" and "BU2B", online and will return to the studio after the tour to complete its next album, titled "Clockwork Angels".

According to RTÉ, DEF LEPPARD singer Joe Elliott will officially launch his own beer in Dublin next week.

Down 'n' Outz, which is named after Elliott's musical side project and is described as "a pilsner style" that has "a deep, rich malt character, with generous hop bitterness," will be launched on on Wednesday, September 15 at The Porterhouse North Rock Garden in Glasnevin.

Brewed and bottled by The Porterhouse, the beer will be available in all Porterhouse bars.

Commented Elliott: "Over the years I've noticed a lot of musicians putting their names to a variety of wines etc which, as nice as a glass of red or white is, well, it's not very rock and roll is it?!

"Beer or lager seem to be the drink of choice at nearly every gig I've ever played or attended so for me it's a much cooler thing to do and having seen how The Porterhouse put quality over quantity, I'm extremely happy to get involved with Oliver [Hughes, Porterhouse MD] and his gang."

Denmark's Gaffa web site recently conducted an interview with GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Gaffa: You became a member of [GUNS N' ROSES] a few years before the release of "Chinese Democracy", but you ended up playing on all the songs. To what extent did you add new parts to them, and to what extent were you redoing existing parts?

Thal: I didn't redo anybody's parts. I only added my own things. And then in the studio they would make the decisions — let's keep this in, let's leave this out, let's make this louder, let's make this lower — but everything I played was my own stuff, whether it was rhythm chords or a solo.

Gaffa: Did you or anyone make a special effort to make sure you were on all the tracks?

Thal: We just did a whole lot of time in the studio, and I kept playing and playing and playing — until we ran out of songs! I played on the stuff that wasn't released, too. I mean, there's a whole big chunk of music from that era, and I played on pretty much everything. Then they decided what to put out, and I'm sure something at some point will happen to the other existing songs. But I'm hoping we could write some music now, with the current lineup, and do something completely fresh.

Gaffa: You're pushing your five year anniversary as a member of the band. How is it different to be a member of GUNS N' ROSES today than it was when you first joined?

Thal: Well, I'm not the new guy anymore! In the beginning, they didn't know what the hell to make of me, but now I think they get it. The good and the bad. And the ugly. And the very ugly! When I first joined, I'm sure they thought, "Who's this dude that the stork just left on our doorstep?" Tommy [Stinson, bass], who was always a punk guy, knows I grew up with a lot of that stuff, and we connect on that level. Me and Richard [Fortus, guitar]will be jamming and talking about old YES music. And actually, the first song that me and Richard both learned to play was "Rock N' Roll Hoochie Koo"! We all e-mail, call and text when we're on different sides of the continent, and when we're on the same side, we hang and jam. Frank [Ferrer] brought his drums to my house last week and we just jammed for a few hours, and the week before that we went over to Sebastian Bach's house and jammed.

Gaffa: What's your take on the reception of "Chinese Democracy"?

Thal: It's like any album — some people are gonna love it, some are gonna hate it, and some are not gonna care either way. Production-wise, you can look at it two ways. Either it's "The White Album", or it's "Pet Sounds" – a big, personal statement. There was so much production, and it was such a fine, fragile balance of getting everything just right. To me, it's more like an orchestration. It wasn't the typical raw rock recording, and I think it took people a minute to understand that, 'cause I think a lot of them were expecting "Appetite II". With the "Use Your Illusion" albums, things were already heading in this direction, and if you take all these years of growth and suddenly you come out of the cocoon with this thing, it's definitely a shock to people.

Gaffa: Chris Cornell has talked about how he thinks albums should be reviewed ten years after their release, 'cause that's when they will be seen in the proper context. Do you think he has a point?

Thal: Oh, totally. When "Chinese Democracy" was released, it still had all the baggage attached to it. "It took this long to make, and rumors say it was this expensive! And it doesn't have the original band members on it!" And it biases people's opinion of what they're listening to, when they have all that stuff on their mind. But if you give it time and look back on it, all those things are no longer relevant, and you're just looking at it for what it is — an album, a collection of music — and you'd get to review it with a fresh take. So I think as more time goes on, people are gonna start appreciating that album more.

Former SKID ROW frontman Sebastian Bach has been added to the Spanish portion of GUNS N' ROSES upcoming tour.

Commented Bach: "I am SO EXCITED to play the biggest tour I have ever done in Spain!!! First time ever playing San Sebastian. Gee, I think I will have fun doing raps during the San Sebastian show. Hahahaha! First time ever playing arenas in Spain! First time in Zaragosa!!

"We are so overjoyed to play with GUNS N' ROSES in Spain and UK and headline shows in U.K. as well!!

"Thanks, Axl and GN'R and everyone involved in putting us on the big stage! Thanks so much.

"See ya soon, Spain and U.K.!"

Bach recently posted 100 new photographs, including shots from the set of JOHN RICH's video shoot for his new single, "Country Done Come To Town", and pictures from Bach's recent trip to Norway to perform at the Norway Rock festival.

Sebastian is currently working on material for his next solo album, which he expects to release sometime in 2011.

Although nothing has been confirmed yet, Sebastian's new CD will likely be made available through Sony Music in Japan.

Bach's current solo band includes guitarists Nick Sterling and Johnny Chromatic, drummer Bobby Jarzombek and bassist Rob DeLuca.

Sebastian last year collaborated with HATEBREED frontman Jamey Jasta on several tracks for Bach's new solo album, with Nick and Charlie Bellmore of the Connecticut band PHANTOMS assisting during the pre-production process. The singer has also written material with John 5 (ROB ZOMBIE, MARILYN MANSON).

According to The Pulse of Radio, a VAN HALEN fan named Doug Lyle posted a report at the Van Halen News Desk web site in which he said that in a chance encounter last weekend, frontman David Lee Roth told him that "You'll be hearing from (VAN HALEN) in the next seven to eight months." Lyle wrote that he met up with Roth on Sunday, September 5 at, of all things, the 145th annual Scottish Gathering & Games in Pleasanton, California, where Roth apparently had a dog competing in the event's sheepdog trials.

Lyle wrote that he recognized Roth by the sound of his voice and that the singer was sporting "a dark goatee" and wearing "a hat, sunglasses, cargo pants, a San Francisco Caledonian Club T-shirt, and what looked like wool socks."

Lyle confirmed that it was Roth when he saw the singer's name on a board listing all the dogs and their owners. He approached the singer, who was friendly, confirmed who he was and posed for a picture (see below).

Recent rumors have indicated that a new VAN HALEN album was in the works, with the band's music publishing company noting in a press release last month that the band is "currently in the studio recording an album with Roth that is due for release in 2011."

The new album would be the first with Roth on the mic since 1983 and first full studio effort since 1998's "Van Halen III".

VAN HALEN's 2008 reunion tour with Roth grossed more than $93 million and drew nearly one million fans to 74 shows.

SOUNDGARDEN officially reunited in early 2010 after 13 years apart, playing an April hometown show in Seattle and a tiny Chicago gig before headlining Lollapalooza last month. A new song called "Black Rain" is out and a retrospective set titled "Telephantasm" arrives later this month. Yet with all that going on, singer Chris Cornell told The Pulse of Radio that it doesn't feel like the band has "reformed". "That word has been weird," he said. "The idea of us getting back together has been strange. You know, we did officially break up, but it honestly doesn't feel like we broke up and now we've reformed. It's hard to explain, but it feels like we've just sort of always been a band and we just took a long break and now we're back together."

"Telephantasm" will come out on September 28 and will include a mix of hit singles, rare live material, alternate takes and album cuts, along with the previously unreleased "Black Rain", which was recorded during the sessions for the band's 1991 "Badmotorfinger" album but left off the album.

In an unusual marketing move, the band has partnered with gaming company Activision Publishing to release the single-disc, 12-song edition of "Telephantasm" inside one million copies of the new video game "Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock". This marks the first time a full-length music album will be bundled with a video game. "Telephantasm" will also be issued in three expanded editions.

SOUNDGARDEN does not have any other shows on its schedule at the moment, although more gigs are likely. The band has not said whether it will record a new album, but a collection of B-sides and a live release are also possibly in the cards.

Three of the remaining DREAM THEATER members — singer James LaBrie, guitarist John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess — have issued separate statements commenting further on the departure of drummer Mike Portnoy, the band's co-founder and leader for 25 years.

James LaBrie: "Thought I would give you time to digest the news of Mike's departure.

"Mike stated that he was burnt out with the DREAM THEATER world and needed a break.

"We have to respect where he is at and where this will lead him at this particular point in time. With that being said, we are more than pumped to continue the legacy of DREAM THEATER and jump full on into the next chapter. Rest assured, it will be great. You can count on it."

John Petrucci: "Obviously you've all heard the news of Mike's departure from DREAM THEATER by now. I felt it important to open up a line of communication in an effort to kill any rumors and to promote clarity.

"I love Mike and really hope he's happy and successful in whatever he does.

"I realize that Mike was always the one to actively stay in touch with our fans, and I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to try to be at least a bit more present on both mine and DREAM THEATER's websites and to let you all know that I am here.

"To me, DREAM THEATER's story is one of defying the odds, standing for true integrity in music and creating our own success through perseverance and hard work, so although Mike's leaving is heartbreaking, I still look forward to an amazing musical journey that continues on with some of the most talented and respected musicians and composers on the planet!"

Jordan Rudess: "Everyone is asking me to comment on my thoughts about Mike Portnoy leaving DREAM THEATER and this huge change that has happened in all of our lives. I have always been able to express my feelings and do my best 'talking' through music, so I decided to voice my statement in this improvisation [see video below]. Hope you 'understand.'"

Portnoy, who is currently out with AVENGED SEVENFOLD as their touring drummer, said of his decision to quit DREAM THEATER, "Please believe me that it is not a hasty decision . . . it is something I have struggled with for the last year or so . . . After having had such amazing experiences playing with HAIL!, TRANSATLANTIC and AVENGED SEVENFOLD this past year, I have sadly come to the conclusion that I have recently had more fun and better personal relations with these other projects than I have for a while now in DREAM THEATER."

Portnoy added, "I love the DREAM THEATER guys dearly and have a long history, friendship and bond that runs incredibly deep with them — it's just that I think we are in serious need of a little break."

The drummer said that DREAM THEATER's "endless write/record/tour cycle for almost 20 years" was the main factor in his decision. He said he wanted a "break," not a "split," but that the band decided to move forward without him.

Portnoy added in a separate post on Facebook that his current gig with AVENGED SEVENFOLD had nothing to do with his departure from DREAM THEATER, writing, "They are just as shocked as you guys."

AVENGED recruited Portnoy to play on its new album, "Nightmare", following the death last December of the band's drummer, James "The Rev" Sullivan. Portnoy was Sullivan's favorite drummer.

Singer M. Shadows told The Pulse of Radio that Portnoy has done a tremendous job filling in for their late bandmate. "He's done everything with the utmost respect for Jimmy's drumming and I think he's gained a lot of respect for Jimmy's drumming," M. Shadows said. "You know, he's had to learn these songs going, 'Man, these are complicated drum parts, this guy was a hell of a drummer.' And it's fun because, you know, Mike gets to see that, but Mike's also able to sit there and bring his own style to it."

DREAM THEATER said in its own statement, "All of us in DREAM THEATER wholeheartedly wish Mike the best on his musical journey. We have had a long and meaningful career together. It is our true hope that he finds all he is looking for, and that he achieves the happiness he deserves. He will be missed."

German power metal veterans HELLOWEEN will release their 13th studio album, "7 Sinners", in North America on November 9 via The End Records.

If there is a golden thread throughout the more than 25 years of HELLOWEEN's history, 13 studio albums, countless headliner tours around the globe and more than 5 million records sold, then it is their special kind of attitude: don't take yourself too seriously and simply live statements like "just have fun with the shit you're doing." Maybe it is exactly this easiness that allows HELLOWEEN to be one of the most constant bands of the genre while simultaneously being the one band who dares to experiment more than their musical peers.

While some copycats would rather stick with the same old patterns, Andi Deris, Michael Weikath, Sascha Gerstner, Markus Großkopf and Dani Löble aren't afraid of taking risks — and are rightfully rewarded with success.

"7 Sinners" is definitively one of the fastest and hardest albums in the HELLOWEEN's history and it bursts with vitality. That might partly be due to the versatility of the various songwriters within the band, who over time have become so homogenous, that the 13 songs formed a unity on their own in the studio , but it may also be due to the fact that the album was recorded completely without a click track, which, considering the extreme speed of the songs is an impressive feat. Especially drummer Löble, who proves that his technique is at a world-class-level. Following his excellent inner clock, bass and drums drive tracks like "Are You Metal?", "Long Live The King" and "Who Is Mr. Madman?" to dizzying tempos. "7 Sinners", with its typically strong melodies and the tangible joy of playing, is a true metal album whose range reaches astonishing dimensions.

It has become a cliche for metal band's to tout their newest opus as their "fastest" or "heaviest" album ever made, but in HELLOWEEN's case, "7 Sinners" is truly a return to form and is indeed their fastest and heaviest release in years. HELLOWEEN bass player Markus Grosskopf stated about the band's new material: "For all those out there who found our special best-of [CD] 'Unarmed' to be too smooth and calm, I have great news: The new album will hit you right in the face! It's gonna be very heavy and contain all [the classic] HELLOWEEN trademarks! Some songs are very powerful and hymnic, others contain the fastest bass-drum patterns our drummer Dani ever played, and this means a lot!"

Jessica Pressler of New York magazine conducted an interview with MÖTLEY CRÜE singer Vince Neil when the band played at the August 22 Ozzfest concert in Camden, New Jersey.

On his recent separation from his fourth wife:

Neil: "You know, we'd been together for ten years. It was a long time. All of a sudden you feel like you're roommates — you're not husband and wife anymore. Sometimes you just drift apart."

On newly single MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx who recently split up with tattoo artist Kat Von D:

Neil: "He took her [on tour] to Europe, and she broke up with him on the flight home."

On Vince Neil Aviation, the private-jet company he launched this year:

Neil: "[I did it] kind of out of necessity. I was chartering airplanes, but it got real expensive. And I realized it was actually cheaper to buy a plane. And then I got two, so …"

"Lately we've been doing some flights running raw gold from Colombia to Atlanta. Like, we pick up like 400 pounds of gold and fly it to Atlanta. They refine it, and then fly it all up to Montreal."

On his upcoming autobiography, "Tattoos & Tequila: To Hell and Back with One of Rock's Most Notorious Frontmen":

Neil: "You can't sugarcoat your life. If you were an asshole, then you have to own up to it. I was an asshole. There's a lot of things that I've done bad."

On being arrested for DUI this past June in Las Vegas, where he lives:

Neil: "I was at the Emmys, somebody handed me some champagne, and I was like, 'All right.' At the after-party I was talking to Susan Lucci and I just kept telling her how pretty she was …"

Zoiks! Online recently conducted an interview with GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Zoiks! Online: You've got a new solo album, "Avalon ", coming out on September 14. If you had to describe the album, how would you do so?

Sully Erna: Wow, you're right at it, there's no messing around with you. That's a good question, because creating this thing was such a journey and it was just trying to figure out what it sounds like, and then as each song came out… they're very different from the next. Every song could be a different genre of music, but for some reason when you listen to it as a whole body of work it just works and connects really well. I would have to describe it as more intellectual and eclectic, hypnotic and tribal, because it was all done with hand drumming. Sometimes we just hit these pockets, these grooves where it just kind of puts you in this trance. It's still got really beautiful melodies, I think, and some great compositions and some amazing musicians that were on the record with me. Yeah, so I'd have to use words like that, eclectic and tribal and very intellectual at times I guess.

Zoiks! Online: You've been working on it for what seven years, on and off, is that right?

Sully Erna: Well you know… No, I haven't been thinking much about a solo record, I just had some songs over the past seven years that I kicked to the side because I knew they'd never be quite right for GODSMACK, but I really liked the songs and I didn't want to just throw them away. I was just like I'll eventually record them someday for something. GODSMACK took that two year break and I found myself with a lot of time, so I thought why not try to put this together. Of course over the last several years I've grown musically as well and then I pulled in some musicians that I really thought would bring in some authenticity to these certain styles I wanted to use, like with more of the Native American drumming. My percussion player, he's from DEAD CAN DANCE (Niall Gregory), he's from Ireland. He's proficient in Brazilian drumming and Australian drumming… all hand drumming. Then reeling Lisa (Guyer) into this project who has this four-octave range, then
we have this Bulgarian cello player Irina (Chirkova), everybody plays at such a level and much more beyond what I have been as a musician, but it was really great to bring in these different inspirations from different parts of the world and having that to add to the process as well. It's been a really great experience making this record.

Zoiks! Online: GODSMACK has become such a huge band that has a definitive sound that the fans want maintained. Do you feel restricted in anyway working in GODSMACK and has that had anything to do with the versatility in "Avalon"?

Sully Erna: You know there was a point in time when I was starting to feel choked, but now what's happened is it's come around full circle, because I've realized that over the years I've always had this other style of music in me and that's why you've heard songs like "Voodoo" and "Serenity" and pieces like that come out of me, because I really have this whole kind of primitive vibe that I love to pursue, this world music kind of stuff. I've now identified what GODSMACK is. I also utilize this solo stuff as my vehicle to present those other kinds of music that are inside of me. There's a whole different kind of art that I love to create. Now I have this vehicle to exercise that through, also at the same time maintain the integrity of what GODSMACK is, because GODSMACK is just a big power monster that is just raw and tough and in your face. This is more like… if there is a masculine and feminine to my art, this would be more of the feminine… a strong
female, very powerful and GODSMACK is the masculine.

Zoiks! Online: Do you think this is your most personal work?

Sully Erna: Without a doubt man, I have literally slit my wrists open and dumped it into this record. Everything I have known in this life, from the time I was born until now is reflected in this record. I have never been so vulnerable (laughs), I mean it's all there. Hopefully people will appreciate the honesty in it.

Zoiks! Online: Are there going to be any live shows or a tour that go along with the album?

Sully Erna: Man, I hope so. I definitely don't want to just stop it here at a record. I have to finish doing some runs with GODSMACK first. I'm not sure what this is live yet, that's what I'm still trying to figure out, I have so many different, great ideas for this project that I don't know if it's a special event project, like awards shows or if it's going to be more theatrical production in theaters. I'm not sure yet, it's a little bit premature to say, but the hope is for sure to get it out there for people to see live, because I for sure want to play this stuff live.

Liljegren Records has confirmed an October 15th release date for the new album from Sweden's 7DAYS called Into Forever.

The 'superstar' band is led by DARK WATER/HARMONY guitarist Markus Sigfridsson features singer Thomas Vikström (THERION, STORMWIND, CANDLEMASS), drummer Daniel Flores (MURDER OF MY SWEET, MIND'S EYE), keyboardist Kaspar Dahlqvist (STORMWIND, DIONYSOS), bassist Andreas Passmark (ROYAL HUNT, NARNIA, ROB ROCK) and singer Christian Liljegren (DIVINEFIRE, NARNIA).

Drummer Troy Patrick Farrell (WHITE LION, LOST ANGELS) will play his final show with glam rockers PRETTY BOY FLOYD tonight (Friday, September 10) at the second installment of the Stockholm Rock Out festival at Gamla Tryckeriet in Alvik, Sweden.

"I wish the guys the best and it has been a fun couple of years but it's time for me to move on," Farrell wrote on his Facebook page. He added, "I would like to get into a project that can not only be challenging, but that can prove to be a natural step up."

Farrell will also play Stockholm Rock Out's day two on Saturday (September 11) with John Corabi (MÖTLEY CRÜE, THE SCREAM, RATT, UNION, ESP). In addition, he has a show scheduled with LOST ANGELS (the band featuring Corabi, guitarist Eric Dover [SLASH'S SNAKEPIT, SEXTUS, ALICE COOPER], bassist Muddy Stardust [L.A. GUNS, GILBY CLARKE] and Farrell) in Leon, Mexico on October 9.

Swedish bassist Magnus Rosén (REVOLUTION RENAISSANCE, HAMMERFALL, X-WORLD/5, FULLFORCE) has just embarked on his second tour performing a one-man solo bass show. This time it's off to Svalbard in the northernmost part of Norway (about midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole) where Magnus is playing three concerts.

"To have this wonderful opportunity to see the world with music is a privilege," Rosén says. "Solo bass is, after all, a very narrow field of music."

Magnus, who toured China earlier in the year, added, "It's just fantastic to have the opportunity to convey my music all over the world and I am really looking forward to gigs in Svalbard."

The first of three concerts is being held tonight (Friday, September 10) in Långebyn in Svalbard, a town that was built with only 1200 inhabitants.

"Svalbard is the world's northernmost inhabited spot which makes it feel extra special to play there," says Rosén.

In addition to performing, Magnus will talk about what it's like to be involved in music and he will discuss his charity work.

On Monday, September 13, Magnus will return to Sweden. Five days later (on Saturday, September 18), he will perform at a cultural promotion concert at Royal Sweden Hong Kong Business Council alognside the Chinese concert pianist Colleen Lee.

"Judgement", the third album from Ashland, Kentucky based hard rockers HYDROGYN, will be released on October 25 in Europe and October 26 in the rest of the world. The CD will be made available via Bad Reputation out of Paris, France for Europe and Rapid Fire Global Music in the States and rest of the world. Each of the two versions of the album will contain different artwork and different bonus tracks.

HYDROGYN recently parted ways with guitarist Jeff Young (ex-MEGADETH). The band's frontwoman, Julie Westlake, stated about Young's exit from the group, "After five months of recording the new [HYDROGYN] album ['Judgement'] with Jeff, it has become very obvious that our personalities and work ethic are very different. I worked alongside Jeff to complete three songs that he brought in for the album, and I must say, I'm just not pleased. Knowing it would have been an argument if anything was said, and trying to give him the opportunity to take part in the writing of the album, as the release date draws near, I just don't want them on the album because I don't think they are strong enough, and knowing what kind of tension it would cause, I just really feel that this is just not a good fit."

Former MEGADETH/BLACK LABEL SOCIETY bassist James Lomenzo played bass on "Judgement" but will not be part of HYDROGYN's touring lineup when the band hits the road in support of the new CD.

The group's last CD, "Deadly Passions", came out in 2008. The effort, which was recorded in Huntington, West Virginia's Smash Hits Studio, included a cover version of ALANIS MORISSETTE's mega-smash "You Oughta Know".

Jonathan Zwickel of The Seattle Times recently conducted an interview with THE SMASHING PUMPKINS leader Billy Corgan. An exceprt from the chat follows below.

The Seattle Times: It's hard hearing music from your childhood without nostalgia or sentimentality overshadowing immediacy and true appreciation.

Corgan: Yeah. The thing I've learned over the years is to play in the moment you're in. You can't go back. You have to play those [old] songs, when you do play them, with a 2010 perspective. You can't try to recreate the mosh pit in '92. It's just not gonna happen.

There's a lot of material that I've tried to play in practice and I just say to the band, "No, it doesn't feel right." The band feels very contemporary, and that's the best way I can describe it. We're standing on that knife-edge of sounding contemporary and not getting sentimental. I think sentimentality with music is death.

At the end of the day, no matter what my roots are, I'm basically playing some bastardized form of pop music. And pop music and sentimentality is a bad mixture. So the way I look at it — for example, we're doing a version of my song "Star". And the way I approach it and the way I try to sing the lyric is I'm not trying to be the 25 year old that was singing about child abuse. I'm standing there as a 43-year-old man that has a different take on the world. So the lyric comes out of me differently. And I don't treat it as this sort of precious moment from my life, I treat it as a very relevant thing that has a different significance as a 43-year-old person as opposed to the 25-year-old that I was when I wrote that. I've learned a lot from Bob Dylan from that approach.

The Seattle Times: Does it seem like the audience is picking up on that?

Corgan: Listen, buddy, who knows what the audiences pick up on, you know what I mean? [laughs] I learned long ago to just do what you believe in and let the chips fall where they may. I'm constantly astounded by the way people interpret what I do, for better and for worse. At this point, they see ghosts where there aren't ghosts and hear voices where there aren't voices. I'm in a happy place. I'm very excited to be playing my music. It's a really good time for me in my music life. I feel a sense of accomplishment to even be standing here in a healthy place with a healthy band. Fans are excited about the shows. I just don't get caught up in that anymore because that's too much of a rollercoaster.

I just had to come to a point as a man where I had to be OK with my value system and not get caught up in anybody else's. Because, believe me, I've heard it for 25 years, the [expletive] indie world's crap about how I should be, how you should be, how you should dress, how you should think, your shows, no guitar solos, all that crap. You just get so tired of hearing it.

DELAIN's second album, "April Rain", was released in North America on June 30, 2009 via Sensory Records (with U.S. distribution through Ryko and Canadian distribution through Sonic Unyon). The North American version of the album features a bonus track — "Come Closer" — which was previously only available on the limited-edition digipack version of the LP.

DELAIN last year parted ways with guitarist Ronald Landa due to musical differences. He has since been replaced by Ewout Pieters.

"April Rain" benefitted from the return of NIGHTWISH bassist/vocalist Marco Hietala who provided male vocals on two tracks, as well as world-renowned cellist Maria Ahn.

Swiss hard rock outfit SIDEBURN has inked a deal with Metal Heaven Records for the European (except Switzerland) and Japanese territories. The band's new album will be released in February 2011 and will be co-produced, mixed and mastered by the legendary producer Beau Hill (WINGER, WARRANT, EUROPE, RATT, ALICE COOPER).

Commented the group: "We have been in contact with Georg at AOR Heaven since the release of [2008's] 'Cherry Red', [and he] has done a great work promoting it and our previous releases. And as we are pretty loyal, it's a quite a logical move for us to collaborate with such a passionate company."

A number of Swedish metal musicians have come together to record and release a song as a way of raising awareness and taking action on the topic of bullying and harrassment in schools. Musicians from such renowned metal bands as MESHUGGAH, NIGHTWISH, SOILWORK, EVERGREY and CLAWFINGER have joined forces in SWEDEN UNITED, a one-off project whose new single, "Open Your Eyes", will be made available on October 11 via Supernova Records.

SWEDEN UNITED is the brainchild of SCARPOINT drummer Erik Thyselius, 33, who launched the project in response to a story he read in 2008 about a three-year-old boy who was repeatedly kicked in the head and violated while at school.

"Many of the people who listen to this kind of music are too young to go to concerts and the idea is to reach out to them by having the people they look up to singing about the subject," Erik tells the Swedish Aftonbladet newspaper.

Another musician involved in the project is 32-year-old SOILWORK singer Björn "Speed" Strid.

"I have worked as a teaching assistant and have seen what happens in our schools," Strid tells Aftonbladet. "It feels really good to put the foot down and speak our minds [on this topic], [because] kids can be cruel."

EVERGREY singer/guitarist Tom S. Englund, 36, had already touched upon this subject before on the band's album "Monday Morning Apocalypse", which was released four years ago.

"When we wrote the songs, I began to examine myself, both as someone who can be seen as a possible bully and as someone who is vulnerable," he tells Aftonbladet. "I concluded that children can be very nasty — simply because they do not understand the consequences of their actions."

Thyselius is hoping to get the message across to students in schools throughout Sweden. SCARPOINT and its management has entered into a partnership with Fryshuset in Stockholm. "We are also planning a campaign in which we will come together and Fryshuset will organize lectures and work actively to reach both the victims and the perpetrators," he says.

"Open Your Eyes" was written by SCARPOINT with Pontus Hjelm, formerly of DEAD BY APRIL, and recorded by CLAWFINGER's Jocke Skog and mixed by Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMON AMARTH, PARADISE LOST). Guest singers laid down their parts in various studios across Sweden and the United States. The cover artwork was created by Carlos Holmberg.

"Open Your Eyes" guest singers (in order of appearance):

* Jens Kidman (MESHUGGAH)
* Jimmie Strimmel (DEAD BY APRIL)
* Anette Olzon (NIGHTWISH)
* Björn "Speed" Strid (SOILWORK)
* Henrik Englund (SCARPOINT)
* Zak Tell (CLAWFINGER)
* Martin Westerstrand (LYLLASYSTER)
* Tom S. Englund (EVERGREY)
* Peter Tägtgren (HYPOCRISY, PAIN)

The following update has been posted on the official web site of the Dutch symphonic metal band EPICA:

"Although EPICA has been touring around the world for months, [guitarist/songwriter] Mark [Jansen] found the time to put another band together, which he takes very seriously: MAYAN.

"Mark founded MAYAN together with Jack Driessen (ex-AFTER FOREVER) and Frank Schiphorst, [and] named [the band] after the wise and rich Mayan culture.

"The release of the [debut MAYAN] album will take place around May 2011 and the CD presentation will [be held] at Paradiso [in] Amsterdam!

"[MAYAN's] music is a mixture of death, black and progressive metal combined with symphonic orchestral arrangements."

Commented Jansen: "There was only one record label we wanted to sign with — Nuclear Blast — so we didn't even look for other companies to work with, and we're very happy that this appreciation is mutual.

"The debut [MAYAN] album will be recorded and mixed at the end of the year 2010 and the beginning of 2011 by Sascha Paeth (who produced the [previous] EPICA records as well). We're also stoked to announce that Jeroen Paul Thesseling (PESTILENCE, OBSCURA), known for his signature six-string fretless playing in progressive death metal, will join as permanent member on bass guitar. Isaac Delahaye [guitar, EPICA] and Ariën van Weesenbeek [drums, EPICA] will complete the lineup!

"We'll work with some very interesting guests and these will be announced very soon!"

DIRGE WITHIN, the metal band featuring ex-SOIL guitarist Shaun Glass, vocalist Jeremy "Jerms" Genske, guitarist Matt Szlachta, bassist James Pezanoski (ex-FROM ALL WITHIN), and drummer Frankie Harchut (ex-THE DOOMSDAY CATALYST), will release a new digital EP on September 14 via iTunes featuring the rare track "Eulogy" as well as a re-recorded version of an old demo song, "Ties That Bind".

In other news, DIRGE WITHIN is currently "knee-deep in writing new music, and the tunes are coming together nice," according to Glass.

DIRGE WITHIN's debut album, "Force Fed Lies", was released on September 1, 2009 via E1 Music (formerly Koch Records). The CD was mixed by Jeff Rose and Martin "Ginge" Ford of Nott-In-Pill studios in Newport, Wales, United Kingdom. Edsel Dope (DOPE) produced the effort alongside Chris Djuricic (Studio One). The album features guest appearances by Corey Beaulieu of TRIVUM and Michael Angelo Batio of NITRO fame. The cover artwork was created by Stephen Jensen from F3 studios.

Contraband Candy's René Ackermann conducted an interview with Trevor Peres and Ralph Santolla of Florida death metal legends OBITUARY at this year's edition of the Hole In The Sky festival (a.k.a. Bergen Metal Fest XI), which was held August 25-28 in Bergen, Norway. You can now watch the chat below.

When asked about the absence of bassist Frank Watkins from OBITUARY's recent tours and whether the band's current touring bassist, Terry Butler (SIX FEET UNDER, ex-MASSACRE), is a permanent addition to the group's lineup, Peres said, "Nothing's permanent. We want [Terry] to be our bass player permanently. Obviously he plays in SIX FEET UNDER, and we're trying to make the schedules work like a puzzle so he can play in both bands. He doesn't really wanna jump ship from SIX FEET, 'cause he has a good situation there, but we want him to play with us, so it's all good. And the reason we don't have Frank Watkins anymore is... just because."

OBITUARY's new concert DVD, "Live Xecution - Party.San 2008", was filmed at 2008's Party.San Open Air festival, which was held in Bad Berka, Germany.

Night Of The Vinyl Dead Records recently released a limited-edition vinyl version of OBITUARY's "Left To Die" EP. Only 500 hand-numbered copies were made available on hand-splattered bloody vinyl, including an insert.

"Left to Die" contains four songs: two new originals ("Forces Realign" and "Left To Die"), a 2008 studio recording of "Slowly We Rot", and a cover of "Dethroned Emperor" by CELTIC FROST.

Austria's longest-running death metal band DARKSIDE has announced its brand new lineup. It is as follows:

* Bernd Brodträger (BLED DRY, PEREAT, DEVANIC) - Guitar
* Janos Murri (DEMOLITION, PRIORITY) - Guitar
* Andrea Rabuini (INFERNAL POETRY, EPHEL DUATH) - Drums
* Wolf - Vocals

DARKSIDE is still looking for a suitable bass player. Interested parties can contact the group at info@darkside.co.at.

In other news, DARKSIDE is currently working on a 20-year anniversary album, "XX-Deca(y)ed – Throne of the Deathgod", featuring re-recorded versions of songs from all of the band's albums as well as a few cover songs, some surprises and a brand new track. The CD artwork will be created by Joachim Luetke, who has previously worked with DIMMU BORGIR, ARCH ENEMY, MESHUGGAH and KREATOR, among others. DARKSIDE is also writing material for a new studio LP, which will be titled "A-E-I-O-U".

Commented Wolf: "After the [canceled] reunion show I was fed up with everything until I got together with Bernd. He is an exciting guitar player, but even more focused on what we intend to do.

"Before we started the whole thing, he wanted me to give him all CDs of DARKSIDE so that he could really get a feel for what we did in the past 20 years. I was stunned!

"Talking about Andreas' abilities would be carrying owls to Athens; everybody can check that on YouTube, haha.

"And finally Janos, he has become a partner in crime for the past years, joining us on the MOONSPELL tour in 2007 and, of course, as a bandmate in DEMOLITION since 2005.

"I'm really excited about this collabouration and looking forward to the recording of the album.

"We have chosen about 20 old songs plus some covers and hopefully a new song is gonna make it to the album, too. Also, the collabouration with Joachim is something very special to me, we have been friends for so many years now.

"To sum it up, this lineup was what made me decide to continue the DARKSIDE story once more. Let's see what the future has still in store for us."

Bernd Brodträger will play session guitarist for Austrian extreme metallers BELPHEGOR on their upcoming European headlining tour.

DARKSIDE released its latest album, "Amber – Skeletal Journeys through the Void", in March 2007 through Austria's Noisehead Records.

The revamped lineup of the Finnish death metal band DE LIRIUM'S ORDER will enter the studio in February 2011 to begin recording its third album for a tentative summer release.

DE LIRIUM'S ORDER's founding guitarist Juha Kupiainen has been composing new material during the past year, and at the same time, seeking new members to complete the group's current lineup. Joining Kupiainen in DE LIRIUM'S ORDER's latest incarnation are guitarist Mika Sundvall, drummer Perttu Kurttila (TRACEDAWN, LITHURIA) and vocalist Jukka Pihlajaniemi (THE UNDIVINE, GHOUL PATROL).

Formed in 1998, DE LIRIUM'S ORDER "embodies unmerciful brutality and insanity put to music," according to a press release. "The band combines grinding blast beats, technical riffs, catchy thrash-lines, obscure melodies and manic guitar leads to create death metal onslaught. In 2003 the band signed a recording contract with Woodcut Records and during the following year the debut album, 'Victim No. 52', featuring Corpse (now DEATHCHAIN) in vocals, was released. This cold-blooded assault received praising response from the critics and death metal fiends worldwide.

"In the beginning of 2007, the band signed with Shadow World Records and the album 'Diagnosis' was released in August, reaching the Finnish charts position #30. This time the vocals were manhandled by Mynni from the leading Finnish death metal act SOTAJUMALA."

Singaporean black/death metallers IMPIETY have set "Worshippers of the Seventh Tyranny" as the title of their seventh full-length album. The follow-up to last year's critically acclaimed "Terroreign" is currently being recorded at Music City Studios in Treviso, Italy for an early 2011 release via Agonia Records. The CD will feature seven songs with a running time of close to 40 minutes.

IMPIETY's current lineup includes founder Shyaithan (bass, vomit) alongside guitarists Guh Lu and Eskathon and drummer Andrea Janko. The band rehearsed in early August in the city of Trieste, Italy and commenced recording at Music City on August 24. The recording, mixing and mastering will be completed in another 7-8 days, and the band is "looking forward to getting this heavy-as-fuck masterpiece unleashed," according to a press release.
