The catalog of September's new releases reads like an encyclopedia of classic rock: Eric Clapton, Santana, Phil Collins, Robert Plant, Neil Young, Doobie Brothers. And that's just for starters!

Release date 9/28/10 - Reprise Records

Eric Clapton's first solo album, released in 1970, was titled Eric Clapton. Now, 40 years later, his place in rock history firmly established, his name recognition is such that only his last name serves as the title of his 20th solo release, Clapton. A great believer in collaboration on his albums, Clapton invited his Blind Faith band mate Steve Winwood, frequent Clapton Crossroads Festival participant Sheryl Crow, JJ Cale, Wynton Marsalis, and Allen Toussaint to praticipate in what he describes as "an eclectic collection of songs that weren't really on the map."

Release date 9/14/10, Rounder Records

Before there was Led Zeppelin, there was Band of Joy, a Birmingham, England based blues band co-founded by Robert Plant, and featuring among its alumni, Plant's future Zep band mate, John Bonham. In 2010, Band of Joy is back, with an all new lineup that includes Patty Griffin sharing vocals with Plant on songs like Lightnin' Hopkins' "Central Two-O-Nine", "Harms Swift Way" (written by Townes Van Zandt) and the first single from the album, "Angel Dance", written by Louie Perez and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos.

Neil Young - 'Le Noise' CD, Vinyl

Release date 9/28/10 - Reprise Records

Neil Young apologizes for his "old school" use of the term "album" to describe Le Noise, his 35th solo studio release, which will be available on CD, vinyl, MP3, Blu-ray and as an iPhone/iPad app. Producer Daniel Lanois tells Rolling Stone, "We cut a couple of solo acoustic songs, but the rest is very electric. There's nothing else out there like it."

Phil Collins - 'Going Back' CD

http://0.tqn.com/d/classicrock/1/6/u/d/collins_back.jpgAtlantic Records

Release date 9/28/10 - Atlantic Records

And what is it that Phil Collins is Going Back to with his new album? To Motown, to the soul music roots of his career's work. "'It shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone that I've finally made an album of my favourite Motown songs. These songs ... make up the tapestry, the backdrop, of my teenage years." The album features covers of 18 '60s classics like "Jimmy Mack", "Papa was a Rollin' Stone" and "Uptight (Everything's Alright)".

Doobie Brothers - 'World Gone Crazy' CD, Vinyl, DVD

http://0.tqn.com/d/classicrock/1/6/w/d/doobies_world.jpgHOR Records

Release date 9/28/10 - HOR Records

Doobie Brothers have been a rock institution for 40 years, a fact they (and we) are celebrating with the release of their 13th studio album, World Gone Crazy. Two of the band's original members, guitarists/vocalists Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons are joined by drummer Michael Hossack (who came along in 1971) and guitarist/vocalist John McFee, who joined up in 1979. Producing is Ted Templeman, who produced the band's classic albums through the '70s.

Release date 9/7/10, RBE Music / Fontana

Randy Bachman and Fred Turner shift into overdrive with descriptively named album, Bachman & Turner. The project originally started as a Bachman solo album, but after he invited Turner to provide vocals on one of the songs, Turner sent Bachman some songs he'd been working on, and thus evolved the reunion album and tour from the former BTO band mates.

'Black Country Communion' CD, DVD

http://0.tqn.com/d/classicrock/1/6/x/d/bcc_bcc.jpgJ&R Adventures

The newest classic rock supergroup -- Glenn Hughes (Deep PurpleBlack Sabbath); Joe Bonamassa; Jason Bonham (Foreigner, UFO); Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater) -- reinforces the band's name by using it as the title of their debut album, Black Country Communion. Hughes is so pleased with the project, he recently told Espy Rock that he's already working on material for a second album.

It has been almost 10 years since Wood's last solo project, Not For Beginners

Release date 9/28/10 - Bigger Picture

The final performance of Alice Cooper's 2009 world tour, at London's Hammersmith Apollo, is captured in this multimedia (CD, DVD, Blu-ray) release. The shock rock never stops, as Coop gets "killed" no fewer than four times during the performance, including encounters with a guillotine.

A version of The Beatles' four appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show was released on DVD in 2003. The 2010 version boasts frame-by-frame digital remastering and the addition of nearly 15 minutes of additional footage. As the title suggests, there are four complete shows, not just The Beatles' segments.

'Ghost Blues - The Story of Rory Gallagher & the Beat Club Sessions' DVD / CD

http://0.tqn.com/d/classicrock/1/6/o/d/rory_ghost.jpgEagle Rock Entertainment

Release date 9/14/10 - Eagle Rock Entertainment

Beat Club was a German TV series and when Irish hard blues rock guitarist Rory Gallagher made three appearances in the early '70s, he was on a roll as a solo artist after a strong (but short) start with Taste, the band he had formed in the '60s that disbanded shortly after performing at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970. Previously unreleased performances are being released on CD and a two-DVD set.
