When Paul Rodgers formed his second major band after Free broke up, he figured the group needed a theme song. So his new band, Bad Company, recorded a song called, naturally, 'Bad Company.' "I wrote the song with that Western feel -- with an almost biblical, promise-land kind of lawless feel to it," Rodgers tells Spinner. "The name backed it up in a lot of respects."
Rodgers, who has one of the most distinctive voices in rock 'n' roll, is now back on tour with Bad Co., which recently released a concert DVD and a greatest-hits compilation. Staples of classic rock radio, his hits with Bad Company include 'Feel Like Makin' Love,' 'Rock N' Roll Fantasy' and the tragic tale of rock-god excess, 'Shooting Star.' We spoke to him, among other things, about fronting a number of major bands, including his stint as lead singer of a reconstituted Queen, why he turned down an offer to join Aerosmith and what he thinks of Christina Aguilera's cover of the Free classic 'All Right Now.'
You're coming off the Queen + Paul Rodgers thing. What did being with them allow you to do that you hadn't done before?
It was hugely challenging. In the past, I had always formed bands. I formed Free with Paul Kossoff, I formed Bad Company with Mick Ralphs, and I formed the Firm with Jimmy Page. This was a different thing, joining forces with a band with a whole repertoire and a whole reputation.
We played together at an awards show in London, and we played each other's songs. If it hadn't worked for me on a musical level -- from the heart -- I would have never have even gone near it. But it did work. We actually played 'All Right Now,' 'We Are the Champions' and 'We Will Rock You' together, and it was just amazing, And so we thought we can do all of this as a new entity -- Queen and Paul Rodgers -- and we'll make it clear to everybody that it is a new entity. I'm amazed that I actually spent four years with them, which is longer than I was with Free.
Free's label initially suggested the name Heavy Metal Kids, is that right?
I've always had troubles with names and record companies. With Free, it was Island Records. They wanted to call the band Heavy Metal Kids. This was after lots of touring, and they came to see us at the show. And all the audience was freaking out and jumping up and down and going crazy. And they still weren't convinced. So they came to see us at a rehearsal, and finally they said, "OK, we think we want to sign you ... but we want to call you the Heavy Metal Kids."
The rest of the band said, "Well, it's a record contract. Let's put the two names on that far wall, and then we'll sit here and we'll look at them and see which one we like." I said, "Don't even waste your time -- we're not changing our name." So we went back to the record company and said, "You know what? It's Free or we walk." We really had our fingers crossed behind our backs, but we stuck to our guns. And I've learned to do that through the years.
It was similar with Bad Company. I just felt it was the kind of name that would attract attention. I didn't want to change the name. Even [band manager] Peter Grant was very unsure about it. I'm not sure why. But they all came on board eventually.
What made you decide to go with the song ['Bad Company'] of the same name?
I think because it had never really been done, as far as I knew. I thought it was interesting to come out as a brand-new band with its own theme song.
Watch Bad Company's Live 'Bad Company' Video
Is it true that the name came from the Jeff Bridges movie 'Bad Company?'
No. I've never even seen the movie, actually. It came from my childhood days. I saw a book on Victorian morals. They showed this picture of this Victorian punk. He was dressed like a tough, with a top hat and the spats and vests and the watch in the pocket and the tails and all of that. But everything was raggy. The shoes were popped out of the soles, and the top of the hat was popped out. And the guy is leaning on the lamppost with a bottle in his hand and a pipe in his mouth, obviously a dodgy person. And you've got this little choirboy kind of guy -- a little kid, actually -- looking up to him. And underneath it said, "Beware of bad company."
You deliberately sang those songs with an American accent. I'm wondering: What would 'Feel Like Making Love' have sounded like with an English accent?
It would sound like this: [Sings, "Well, I feel like making love" in a soft, cheesy voice]. I think I learned the language of rock 'n' roll listening to lots of blues and soul guys. And I imitated those guys. People like John Lee Hooker, with a very deep American accent. I don't think the language of rock 'n' roll is an English accent; I think it's an American accent.
A couple of years after Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham died a 'Shooting Star' type of death, you left your own band to be with your family. How did his death influence that decision?
It influenced me very much. But I was ready for it, anyway. I was ready to come off the road, and I could sense the feeling that we were just flying a little too high and getting a little too crazy, and something had to give along those lines.
It happened so many times before -- that was really the inspiration for the song 'Shooting Star.' John was such a lovely guy. It was such a sad thing to lose him as a friend and for the world to lose such an amazing talent. Because I do think he was probably one of the greatest rock 'n' roll drummers that ever lived. So it was really a blow. And it was a harsh taste of reality.
So I decided I needed some time to live some life. But I never ever got very far away from music. I built a studio in the house and just continued recording. And before I knew it, Jimmy [Page] was coming around, and we were writing songs, the Firm was born and we were back on the road again.

Were you ever contacted to replace Steven Tyler in Aerosmith?
Well, yes, I was, actually. Joe Perry came up to me at another awards celebration. And he said that Steve was not really interested in touring anymore at the moment, and they were all ready to tour and that they were looking for somebody to take that slot. And I said to him, "You know ... maybe you guys ought to rethink that." And I'm happy to see that they're up and running now because they're a fabulous band.
Did you not want to do that just because you had already done the Queen thing?
I think so. As I said earlier, Queen was an exception -- joining forces with an actual band that existed. Because in the past I've always formed a band and then written a whole catalog of songs for that band.
I saw that Eminem sampled a song of yours ['Reaching Out,' with Queen], and Christina Aguilera covered 'All Right Now.'
I thought Christina Aguilera's version of 'All Right Now' was absolutely rocking. I loved it. I've heard some people do that, and, eh, you know -- it's quite hard to pull off, really. But she gave it some stick. It was good.
It was interesting, the Eminem thing, because it wasn't quite what I had planned. When we were touring, they tossed around a version of that song and how they planned to sample it. And it was very different to the final result. I wasn't actually crazy about the final result, in all honesty. I never use foul language onstage or on records. It's just not my thing. I do like Eminem, and I think he has a very credible point and lots to say, but he does it in a different way than I would ever do.
Weren't you and your wife recently handing out money to fans?
That's something my wife does, and it's dear to her heart. She sees someone she feels something for and she gives them a magic gift. It's called a Random Act of Generosity. I think it's, like, $100. All they have to do in reply is do something nice for someone else.
What's her standard -- does she look for something in particular?
You know what? I'm going to get her to come on and answer that one for you. [Retrieves wife, Cynthia]
Cynthia Rodgers: It's a feel thing. It's been interesting because we're giving away $100,000, and I think right now we're at about $65,000 that we've given away. When people are handed an envelope, the looks on their faces -- some of them look like they're being served. Some of them are very reluctant to take the envelope. But I've been really lucky with feeling who's been most needy.
There was one gentleman, he had his two young girls -- about 9 and 11 -- and he knew all the lyrics to Paul's songs. So I handed him an envelope. He waited after the show when we came out, and he had tears in his eyes. He said, "I'm a single dad, and you don't know how much this means to my family." He'd lost his wife in a car accident. But he said, "More than anything, it teaches my girls there are good people in the world and good things do happen."
Guns N' Roses' Reading Festival set ended in chaos tonight (August 27), when the sound was cut after the band overran by more than an hour.
The band, led by Axl Rose, took to the stage over an hour after schedule, at 10:30pm (BST), to play their headline slot at the festival. Despite earlier warnings from festival organiser Melvin Benn that he would not tolerate the band playing past 11:30pm, they still managed to play the majority of their set until roughly midnight - when they walked offstage after playing 'Night Train'.
However, as the band tried to return for an encore, the sound was cut. Led by Rose, they still tried to launch into 'Paradise City', though only the drums could be heard as all other instruments had been switched off. As the crowd started to sing the track, Rose tried to greet members of the audience while singing through a megaphone - watch fan footage of the incident on the right now.
The band continued in this way for roughly five minutes, before finally coming together on the stage to bow and walk off.
Earlier in the day, Rose had tweeted: "Bkstage at Reading. Tour's ON! Our apologies 4 any inconvenience. Peace!"
However, he failed to apologise to the crowd for being late, and barely spoke to the audience during the gig. He received a hostile reaction from some parts of the crowd throughout the gig, with some booing after every song and repeatedly chanting, "What a twat".
Guns N' Roses played:
'Chinese Democracy'
'Welcome To The Jungle'
'It's So Easy'
'Mr. Brownstone'
'Sorry'
'Richard Fortus Guitar Solo'
'Live And Let Die'
'This I Love'
'Rocket Queen'
'Dizzy Reed Piano Solo'
'Street Of Dreams'
'You Could Be Mine'
'DJ Ashba Guitar Solo'
'Sweet Child O' Mine'
'Instrumental Jam'
'Axl Rose Piano Solo'
'November Rain'
'Night Train'
'Paradise City' (with the sound cut)
GUNS N' ROSES will play U.K.'s Leeds festival tonight (Sunday, August 29) despite singer Axl Rose's previous claim that that the band would pull out of the gig because the group's appearance at the Reading festival on Friday (August 27) was cut short. In two separate message on Twitlonger.com, a related Twitter site where one can post messages longer than 140 characters, Rose wrote, "We are in constant talks to ensure the fans attending Leeds get what they paid for without undue bureaucratic interference. We thank you for your understanding. . . In regard to Reading, we feel at the very least the fans deserve an apology from those responsible for the nonsense. We'd also like to thank the fans for being so great, singing along n' not tearing the place apart!!"
GUNS N' ROSES reportedly started its Reading festival performance at 10:30 p.m. — more than an hour later than scheduled — and was given an extra half hour to play, until roughly midnight.
In a statement to BBC News, the Reading festival organizers said, "GUNS N' ROSES wanted to 'extend' the new agreed curfew but were prevented from doing so in order to comply with the entertainment licence issued by Reading Council."
GUNS N' ROSES played the final song of its set, "Paradise City", with no guitars and the crowd shouting along despite the lack of sound with Axl Rose singing through a megaphone, according to BBC News.
Although GUNS N' ROSES guitarist D.J. Ashba subsequently aplogized for the band hitting the stage "a little late," he accused the organizers of the festival of having "a personal grudge" with GUNS N' ROSES stemming from eight years ago when the band last played the Leeds festival.
Ashba's GN'R bandmate Richard Fortus (guitar) echoed D.J.'s sentiments, writing on his Twitter profile, "I don't think there is another band out right now that has the balls to do what we did last night. Axl insists on doing things his way and not playing by the fucking rules. You can love him or hate him for it, but the fact of the matter is.... he's the real fucking deal. skin, blood and soul. Deal with it or not, but it won't ever change."
GUNS N' ROSES singer Axl Rose has commented on the band's appearances this past weekend at the U.K.'s Leeds and Reading festivals, the latter of which was cut short by the festival organizers due to curfew issues. In a message on Twitlonger.com, a related Twitter site where one can post messages longer than 140 characters, Rose wrote, "Don't know what it is with us or these last two shows. Takes the fun out it for everyone — fans, band and crew alike, but whatever.
"So you know, we allegedly had a deal in place pre-show with the city at least at Leeds to do a bit longer performance that was either miscommunication, someone wasn't informed, changed their mind, didn't care or was a con. Regardless, the nonsense just seems so unnecessary but without real management or industry presence is unfortunately beyond our control. We hope the fans feel they got at least what they could from us under the circumstances as for us all things considered that's the main thing. The rest is filler.
"Anyway, enough rambling. Peace, thanks for understanding and what we did manage to get done out there was a blast! The crowds and fans were amazing!! And in our opinion (not that apparently it means much) you deserved better!! Thanks again!!"
Professionally filmed video footage of the Reading performance (courtesy of the BBC) can be viewed below.

LIVING LOUD , which features legendary bassist Bob Daisley — of OZZY OSBOURNE, URIAH HEEP, GARY MOORE, BLACK SABBATH and RAINBOW fame — alongside Australian superstar Jimmy Barnes, the DEEP PURPLE duo of guitarist Steve Morse and keyboard player Don Airey plus URIAH HEEP drummer Lee Kerslake, is working on material for its long-awaited second album. Barnes tells Australia's Undercover, "Bob Daisley and Steve Morse are actually getting together to write some stuff and then they are going to send it to me to write vocals."
LIVING LOUD's self-titled 2004 debut created a stir as it included re-worked versions of the Daisley/Kerslake co-composed OZZY OSBOURNE "Blizzard of Ozz" staples "Mr. Crowley", "I Don't Know" and "Crazy Train", originally from the "Blizzard Of Ozz" album and "Over The Mountain", "Flying High Again" and "Tonight" from the 1981 album "Diary Of A Madman".
Bob Catley (MAGNUS), Jorn Lande (MASTERPLAN), Amanda Somerville, Olli Hartmann and Michael Kiske (HELLOWEEN) are among the musicians who will tour with AVANTASIA, the project led by EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet, on the group's upcoming tour.
So far the following dates have been announced:
Nov. 30 - Switzerland - Pratteln, Z7
Dec. 01 - Switzerland - Pratteln, Z7
Dec. 03 - Germany - Lichtenfels, Stadthalle *
Dec. 04 - Germany - Kaufbeuren, All Karthalle *
Dec. 10 - Mexico - Mexico City, Circo Volador
Dec. 15 - Argentina - Buenos Aires, [to be announced]
Dec. 18 - Germany - Fulda, Esperantohalle *
Dec. 19 - Germany - Essen, Grugahalle *
* Due to the fact that this is not a regular or annual tour but an extensive AVANTASIA event and experience, these shows will begin promptly at 8:00 p.m.
Tickets for the German dates are available at www.metaltix.com.
"It's gonna be a once-in-a-lifetime affair!" said Sammet when the all-star project first set off on a world tour a few years ago. And although it seemed impossible to bring the project onto the stage after an extensive preparatory time, AVANTASIA headlined some of the biggest summer festivals in 2008. To this day, many fans recall the AVANTASIA live shows as magical, once-in-a-lifetime concert experiences.
Commented Sammet: "There has always been the desire to do it again, but, of course, there is always a risk. It requires a huge amount of time and energy; there are no figures based on experience, because I don't know anybody who has taken an all-star metal opera on the road to play indoor venues. The stage production is abnormally expensive and you must not forget the many people who are involved and who come from different parts of the world. It requires a good timing.
"At some point we sat together and checked if and how we could possibly do it once again and we soon found out that December 2010 would be the right period to do a real tour.
"I admit that four weeks [is] not really a long time frame, but it's better to do a short tour than no tour at all. And if we hadn't taken that chance, it would have never happened because we will come with a lot of musicians and vocalists and it's a nightmare to mind all our individual schedules with our main bands."
Unlike AVANTASIA's festival tour of 2008, the band's upcoming dates will be full-fledged headlining performances, with the group performing longer sets than has been the case in the past.
"It was great to play Wacken and Sweden Rock Festival, but playing a festival you only have so much time," explained Sammet. "You play ten songs and people have a party and everybody's got fun. But doing our own tour, we can really create an atmosphere, we can play a lot longer and take people on a journey through the history of AVANTASIA. We can actually take people to the world of AVANTASIA itself.
"Fans can expect a bombastic concert experience.
"Many so-called 'metal operas' have been released on albums recently, but AVANTASIA will bring it on stage and take fans around the globe with them.
"You can't compare a normal band to what we are going to do. If all your favourite singers appear on one stage at the same night to take you on a musical journey, then this isn't just great, it's über-great!"
AVANTASIA released its new epic masterpiece on April 3 as regular CDs ("The Wicked Symphony" and "Angel Of Babylon"), two separate double picture vinyls, and as a beautiful collector's edition with an AVANTASIA picture book. The deluxe box set features two CDs in two digibooks with impressive booklets, codes for online content (like bonus tracks, etc.) and the AVANTASIA book "The Wicked Trilogy", including many never-before-seen photos from the tour and from photo sessions, etc. An exclusive interview, liner notes, and a biography is also included. All the album versions were released simultaneously on April 3, so no one ise forced to buy everything piece by piece; instead everyone is able to choose a version of his/her choice right from the release date.
"Dying For An Angel", the new video from AVANTASIA, can be viewed below. The clip was shot in late January at the ancient town hall in Hannover, Germany and features a special guest appearance by SCORPIONS singer Klaus Meine.
"The Wicked Symphony" and "Angel Of Babylon" are the continuation of the trilogy that began with the 2008 album "The Scarecrow".
The cover artwork for the two CDs (see below) was created by Thomas Ewerhard, who also worked on EDGUY's "Hellfire Club" and AVANTASIA's "The Scarecrow" albums.
Regarding his decision to release the new AVANTASIA chapter in two separate CDs, Tobias said, "I have always given my very best, but this new chapter in AVANTASIA's history is too much and too ambitious to be just a regular album. I have worked on it for years now, and it has become even more than two albums!
"I knew that story would be spread out over two albums back then when we started working on it in 2006, 'cause we had written a real rock opera of over 20 songs even back then. But since then, we kept composing, and out came even bigger and better material.
"Looking at the music industry today with all the CD burning and downloading, I guess in the near future many of us traditional rock and metal bands won't be able to spend such a production budget. I am afraid I won't be able to afford so many guests and such a big production with orchestration and a choir and all that. That's why this production takes so much time; it may be the last big epic I will be able to afford, and I want it to be the biggest piece I have worked on so far."
Kiske has appeared on every AVANTASIA album so far, including the first two full-length releases, "The Metal Opera" (2001) and "The Metal Opera Pt. II" (2002).
As previously reported, in November the prestigious all-star project AVANTASIA will set off on a world tour, kicking off on the 30th of November at Z7, Pratteln, Switzerland . First guests for the tour have been confirmed. Besides MAGNUM-voice Bob Catley, the infamous Jorn Lande (MASTERPLAN), Amanda Somerville (HDK, KISKE/SOMERVILLE,), Olli Hartmann (AT VANCE) and main-man Tobias Sammet, legendary ex-HELLOWEEN vocalist Michael Kiske will hit the stage this time as well. The first dates have been confirmed below:
November
30 - Pratteln, Switzerland - Z7
December
1 - Pratteln, Switzerland - Z7
3 - Lichtenfels, Germany - Stadthalle *

18 - Fulda, Germany - Esperantohalle *

* Due to the fact that this is not a regular or annual tour but an extensive Avantasia-event and experience, the show start for Avantasia will begin promptly at 8:00PM. Tickets for the German dates are available at Metaltix.com.

PANTERA found its growl and groove on "Cowboys From Hell", a landmark album whose bone-powdering intensity, razor-sharp riffing and pummeling rhythmic assault represented a turning point in modern metal when it was released in 1990. More than just PANTERA's major label debut, many consider this album to be the official debut of the PANTERA lineup with singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul and bassist Rex Brown.
To celebrate the 20-year anniversary of "Cowboys From Hell", Rhino rounds up a three-disc "Ultimate Edition," a three-disc "Deluxe Edition," and a two-disc "Expanded Edition." All three editions include a newly remastered version of the original album along with unreleased and rare live performances from the "Cowboys From Hell" tour. The "Ultimate" and "Deluxe" editions will also feature a disc of unreleased demos for nearly every album track, plus, "The Will To Survive", a previously unreleased song recorded during the album's sessions.
"'The Will To Survive' is a great track. With so many killer songs, it was hard to pick and choose the ones that should make our major label debut," says Vinnie Paul. "After hearing it for the first time in about 20 years, it's a pretty stellar performance and I am definitely proud that it will see the light of day for all the die-hard PANTERA fans around the world! It shows the true musical diversity of the band at that time!"
The "Deluxe" and "Expanded" editions of "Cowboys From Hell" will be released September 14 at all retail outlets, including www.pantera.com and www.rhino.com . The "Deluxe Edition" will be available for a suggested list price of $29.98 (physical) and $17.99 (digital) and the "Expanded Edition" for $19.98 (physical) and $12.99 (digital).
The "Ultimate Edition" will feature all three discs included in the "Deluxe Edition" and will be housed in an intricate box including several replica memorabilia pieces from the "Cowboys" era. The "Ultimate Edition" will be available on November 23 and final pre-order details, as well as the contents, will be unveiled soon on PANTERA's Facebook page.
Along with the remastered version of "Cowboys From Hell", all three sets include a disc of live music recorded during the tour for the album. It begins with seven unreleased performances from PANTERA's September 15, 1990 appearance at the Foundations Forum metal convention in California, a show recorded for radio broadcast but never released commercially. The remainder of the disc contains the five-song EP "Alive And Hostile", a collection of performances recorded in 1991 at the Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow that was previously available only in Australia as part of a 1994 boxed set.
The "Ultimate" and "Deluxe" editions of "Cowboys From Hell" include a third disc that contains the previously unreleased "The Will To Survive", along with demos for 10 of the album's 12 songs, including early versions of the title track "Psycho Holiday", "The Art Of Shredding" and "Cemetery Gates".
After being turned down "twenty-eight times by every major label on the face of the earth," ATCO Records A&R rep Mark Ross saw the band when Hurricane Hugo stranded him in Texas. The rest, as they say, is history, including another seven years and over a million miles of touring for "Cowboys" to be certified platinum (one million album sales) by the RIAA.
The album's liner notes include essays by each of the band's surviving members, producer Terry Date, and the aforementioned Ross. Recalling the first time he saw PANTERA, Ross writes, "By the end of the first song, my jaw was on the floor. The sonic power of it all — the attitude and the musicianship — blew me away. Basically, you had to be an idiot to not think they're amazing. I mean, how could you see these guys and not think, Holy shit!?"

Jason Price of Icon Vs. Icon recently conducted an interview with Philip Anselmo (DOWN, PANTERA, SUPERJOINT RITUAL, ARSON ANTHEM). A few excerpts from the chat follow.
Icon Vs. Icon: We obviously can't talk about PANTERA without talking about Dimebag Darrell's untimely passing. It has been five years and you guys are putting together this commemorative release together. It is clear that his death has had a major impact on you. Is it getting any easier for you as time passes?
Anselmo: No. As a matter of fact, in a strange way, you kinda just took the words out of my mouth and asked the right question. No. Every year gets harder. Every year, when the dates roll by it gets harder and this past year has been the hardest year of all. I think initially, the first year, two years … [pauses] I don't know how long. It was just such a shock. It is very hard to comprehend, but I get it now. I get it now. I understand. Sure, I think about what could be. Yes, I think about Dimebag every day of my life. Every waking day of my life, man. So, no. It doesn't get any easier.
Icon Vs. Icon: You have had a love/hate relationship with the "rock media" for years? What are your thoughts on that part of the industry these days and your relationship with it?
Anselmo: Well, honestly it has a whole lot to do with my attitude. I think for many, many, many years I was a wounded animal lashing out. I was making a lot of mistakes with medication, drugs and alcohol. I was just fucking … [pauses] pardon the F-bomb … but I was just fucking out of my mind and I was really lashing out. After major back surgery, and that is a heck of a struggle, to come back from that both physically and mentally, today I am in a much better place. It is like what I give is what I get back. With the press, when I would fly off at the mouth, the press would eat it alive. Good or bad. I learned that lesson a few different times after being suckered into different confrontational things via different articles or different things in magazines and whatnot. Hence my silence after Dimebag's passing. There was no way I was ready to have a microphone shoved in my face. That is why I shut myself off for a long while. I have had interviewers,
not many, I have definitely had a couple that try to wind me up with questions that are designed to do just that. But hey man, it is tough to fool the ol' fat now. You can't fuck … with me.
Icon Vs. Icon: You have been working on your autobiography. Is that your way of shedding some light on the man behind the person we see in the limelight?
Anselmo: Sure! That is an interesting thing to bring up. Writing a book is a very interesting process because you get to go through and find out for yourself what fueled the man as a youngster and all the little different things that happened in succession where you put one foot in front of the other and the next thing you know, you are doing the 20-year anniversary of your first record, ya know?! So it's like "How the heck did I get to be 42 years old?!" It's a hell of a story.
Icon Vs. Icon: Definitely.
Anselmo: I guess the biggest misconception will be deduced by the people from whatever I put out, because I am going to tell the truth. I'm going to be subjective and I am going to come from the gut and from the heart. Look forward to reading that sucker. I have been working tediously on the thing but I am very particular, so don't look for it next week or anything, but it's coming.
Icon Vs. Icon: There have been rumors of a solo album from you circulating in the fan community. Can you elaborate on that at all and how do you envision a Phil Anselmo solo album sounding?
Anselmo: Well, it's vicious. I have been in so many different side projects, I like to say that not all of them sound alike. With that being said, there is no way I would want to rehash anything traditional, so to speak. I'm gonna touch on tradition, ya know. Tradition is distorted guitar, drums, bass. But yes, I have been writing new stuff. Yes, it is super motherfuckin' aggressive. It's at its beginning points man but I got over 10 things that are close. I can't give you a timeline, but I think, little by little, I might leak some here or there when it is done. I will just let people take it in how they want but, once again, I know heavy music. I see where heavy music is. I want to take heavy music like a ball of clay and reshape it, if you catch me. Reshape it differently than it has been shaped before. That is where I am at right now.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS frontman Scott Weiland has responded to allegations that he is using backing tracks during the band's live shows after he fell off a stage at a recent concert and landed heavily without missing a note.
While performing in Cincinnati, Ohio on August 25, Weiland lost his footing, stumbled and fell clumsily while carrying a microphone in one hand and a megaphone in the other. According to Rock Radio, "despite the tumble, his voice was heard to continue the song — he wasn't singing at the precise moment he fell, but when the moment came to resume he didn't sound short of breath, out of tune or in any way flustered."
At STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' August 28 concert in Pittsburgh, Pensylvania, Weiland addressed the rumors (see video below) before the band launched into the song "Wicked Garden", stating from the stage, "I would like to dispel a rumor swilring its way around the Interwebs that I am not singing these songs that I wrote. There has never been a time in the 25-plus years that I have been singing with these guys or a combination of these guys or with other musicians that I have not sang. So whoever started that bullshit claim, like so many other bullshit claims, which is the problem with modern technology, and there are so many great things about it. But that it such a travesty. We are a rock and roll band, [and] rock and roll bands perform live."
Supporters can often be found in the strangest of places but an e-mail to drummer Steve Grice of U.K. thrashers ONSLAUGHT this week wishing the band luck and enclosing the photograph below certainly rated amongst the more bizarre fan mail the band had ever received. From Lieutenant Huw Jones of 176 Abu Klea Battery based at Camp Bastion in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, the e-mail revealed that ONSLAUGHT's music has inspired more than just the odd iPod playlist amongst the U.K.'s serving forces!
Even with short online times and very limited connections available between the two, Grice was able to learn that Lieutenant Jones' company actually has five unit troops that are called Onslaughts. Grice comments, "Yes, it appears they've got five missile-based 'troops' (the artillery version of a platoon) which carry the call sign 'Onslaught'. This is Onslaught 82 with their GMLRS launchers outside Camp Bastion and apparently, with a range of 70km, they cover all different areas of Helmand Province with these bad boys!! Love the shirts, lads!!" Lieutenant Jones also revealed that the coincidence is further steeped in legend!! "I heard from one of the more senior soldiers actually that the name is no coincidence," Rice adds. "Nige Rockett [ONSLAUGHT guitarist] was apparently the 'inspiration' for using (read as 'stealing'!) the name. And quite frankly, we think it's just awesome!"
Ayden Rose, the three-year-old son of DROWNING POOL/ex-SOIL singer Ryan McCombs, was severely injured in a riding lawn mower accident that left severe damage to his right leg. Ayden will need multiple surgeries and has a long road of recovery ahead of him.
McCombs' family and friends are asking those who can to help raise funds for the astronomical medical bills.
To help lighten the financial burden, a benefit show will be held with auction and raffle items that have been donated by friends in the music and sports industry to aid this cause.

Russell is the singer behind such hits as "Once Bitten Twice Shy", "Rock Me", "Angel" and "Save All Your Love". He faces another operation, but he was in good spirits earlier this month. "I've felt better, but I've felt a hell of a lot worse," he said in a statement. "Nothing is going to keep me down. This whole thing definitely makes me appreciate life more than I ever have."
Russell is expected to recover in four to six weeks.
On September 11 at the Stockholm Rock Out festival in Stockholm, Sweden, GREAT WHITE will play a one-time-only European show with the legendary singer Paul Shortino (QUIET RIOT, ROUGH CUTT and the recently reunited KING KOBRA).
GREAT WHITE released its latest album, "Rising", in North America in April 2009 via Shrapnel Records. The CD was issued in Europe on March 13, 2009 through Frontiers Records.
Since reuniting in January 2007 to perform a benefit concert, GREAT WHITE has moved forward with the successful release in the summer of the same year of their return album "Back To The Rhythm", a record which was hailed by critics and fans as a return to the heydays of the band. After a world tour that celebrated the first 25 years of GREAT WHITE and that brought them for 14 concerts to Europe, bass player Sean McNabb opted out and was replaced by Scott Snyder (ex-RAMOS, ACCOMPLICE).
GREAT WHITE is:
Jack Russell - vocals
Michael Lardie - guitars, keyboards
Mark Kendall - guitars
Scott Snyder - bass
Audie Desbrow – drums
Hard-hitting Danish four-piece THE BURNING has revealed the cover artwork for its new album, "Hail The Horde", due in Europe on October 25 via Massacre Records. The cover art was created by Brent Elliot White, who has previously worked with MEGADETH, DEATH ANGEL and WHITECHAPEL.
"Hail The Horde" was produced by Jacob Bredahl (HATESPHERE, PURIFIED IN BLOOD), while the drum recordings and mastering were handled by Tue Madsen (SUICIDE SILENCE, HEAVEN SHALL BURN, SICK OF IT ALL). The album features guest vocals by Scott and Bjørn Jensen (DAWN OF DEMISE) and Søren "Nico" Adamsen (ARTILLERY).
"Hail The Horde" track listing:
01. Godless
02. Bait The Hook
03. Flames Be Your FriendNihilist Life
04. Nihilist Life
05. Swing The Pendulum
06. Wolf Moon (feat. Søren "Nico" Adamsen)
07. Hail The Horde (feat. Scott and Bjørn Jensen)
08. Inverted Cross Syndrome
09. Metamorphosis
10. Baptized In Bong Water
11. Turn Or Burn
12. Disownment
The song "Bait The Hook" is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page.
Commented THE BURNING frontman Johnny Haven: "We knew that we wanted the Jensen brothers to guest on one of the more rock-oriented songs on the album. And the title track has a simple 'in-your-face' riff that sounds like MÖTLEY CRÜE played on 33 rpm with Grave's guitar sound and their deep growls were a perfect match for that song.
"'Wolf Moon' is the closest thing a band like ours will ever come to a ballad, and Nico's voice goes really well with the DANZIG-inspired chorus. This is also the first THE BURNING song to ever feature acoustic guitar."
THE BURNING previously stated about the new CD: "This is by far the most uncompromising, raw and natural sounding album we have ever done. You can actually tell that it is people playing; we left in small mistakes, and we didn't drum replace or any of that stuff. And the whole thing sounds like you are in the rehearsal room with cabinets and smoking speakers in front of you.
"For the first time ever we wrote more songs than we needed for the album, and out of the 17 we wrote, the 12 best are going on the album.
"Musically, the backbone is heavily inspired by mid-Nineties groove metal, mixed with heavy, dirty rock choruses and crossover thrash. Not unlike the albums released by bands like PANTERA, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, SEPULTURA and HELMET during the mid-Nineties."
THE BURNING will play songs from the new album next month when the band hits road in Denmark as part of the MTV Headbangers Ball Tour with RAUNCHY and INVOCATOR.

Western Australia metallers CHAOS DIVINE have tapped renowned Swedish heavy producer and owner of Fascination Street Studios, Jens Bogren, to mix their second full-length album. Jens has previously worked on records from OPETH, KATATONIA and SYMPHONY X, to name only a few.
CHAOS DIVINE's as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2008's "Avalon" was recorded in June and July of this year at Underground Studio in Perth, with guitarist and producer Simon Mitchell handling engineering duties. An early 2011 release is expected.
The band hopes to release the album nationally in Australia in early 2011.

"Methods To End It All", the debut album from Northern Ireland's melodic melancholy metallers CREATION'S TEARS, will finally see the light of day on October 4 via the Cure For Poison label through Code 7 (via Plastic Head). Initially due to be released in the spring of 2010, the CD saw its release date postponed after frontman Brian Eddie Reynolds contracted serious food poisoning during final recording sessions in Sweden with producers David Castillo and Jens Bogren (OPETH, KATATONIA, SOILWORK).
"Methods To End It All" features a guest appearance by former PARADISE LOST/MARSHALL LAW drummer Lee Morris.
Following his departure from PARADISE LOST in 2004, the sticksman — who appeared on such classics as PARADISE LOST's "Draconian Times" and "One Second" — has been involved in teaching drums to aspiring young musicians as well as keeping active on the session circuit.
Stated Lee Morris: "When I was first contacted by CREATION'S TEARS about playing on their album, I'll be honest and say that I didn't really have any great desire to re-visit this style of playing again, as after nearly a decade of touring and recording with PARADISE LOST, I'd kinda just about exhausted my enthusiasm for this scene. However, after hearing this band's demos and being really impressed by the new fresh ideas they had, plus their incredible ambition, it became a bit of a no-brainer, really, on my involvement on this record."
"Methods To End It All" track listing:
01. Another Collision
02. I Fail
03. Creation's Tears
04. Odyssey (Opus IX)
05. I'm Falling (You'll Never Know)
06. Parody Paradigm
07. The Last Tear Is Cried For Romance
08. No Saviour Here
09. Untimely Reminder
Influential Greensburg, Pennsylvania-based heavy music act ZAO has commenced work on material for its next studio album, which the band plans on releasing through its own label. The group explains, "The music industry has made enough money off of bands and wasted it. Why not put it out ourselves and sink the 'profits' back into future releases?"
Regarding the progress of the songwriting sessions for the next CD, ZAO states, "We are writing, we have been exchanging songs. We have tossed songs that are 'too standard for ZAO,' we are trying new things. It's liberating. We are doing our best to get Russ [Cogdell, guitar] on the album (as we tried with [2009's] 'Awake?'). Needless to say, we are taking our time because we can.
"So as of right now, ZAO is writing, self-managing and planning on self-releasing."
"Awake?", the latest album from ZAO, sold around 2,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD debuted at No. 19 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
Released in May 2009 via Ferret Music, the follow-up to 2006's "The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here" was recorded in Latrobe, Pennsylvania (near Greensburg); Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Encinitas, California; and San Marcos, California. AS I LAY DYING frontman Tim Lambesis and Daniel Castleman headed up the proceedings, along with ZAO's Scott Mellinger.
ZAO's "Where Blood & Fire Bring Rest" was hailed as "one of the most the most influential albums of 1998" by Alternative Press magazine. That album, which introduced frontman Dan Weyandt to the heavy music scene, and follow-up "Liberate te ex Inferis", which introduced guitarist and songwriter Mellinger, continue to be cornerstone albums to a new generation of bands drawing influence from ZAO's dark, passionate and creative music.
British vocalist Tony Mills (ex-SHY), who currently fronts Norway's most famous hard rock sons TNT, suffered a heart attack at Oslo airport Saturday afternoon (August 28) on his way to a gig with the rest of the band. Mills is now in recovery and will be moved out of intensive care today (Monday, August 30).
Mills, 47, wishes to thank all the personnel who helped him at Oslo airport and in the intensive unit at the hospital. He and the rest of TNT also want to express their gratitude to all the fans and friends for their support in the last two days. "I look forward to coming back and singing!" says Mills.
TNT released its latest album, "Atlantis", in September 2008 in Scandinavia (via Bonnier-Amigo). The CD was mixed by Tommy Hansen (HELLOWEEN, PRETTY MAIDS, JORN) and features the bonus track "Substitute".
The band's previous CD, "The New Territory", entered the Norwegian chart at position No. 11 back in May 2007 and was the group's first to feature Mills following the departure of Tony Harnell.

"Reaping Death", the new CD single from WATAIN, which was exclusively distributed in Sweden via Sweden Rock Magazine, was certified gold in the band's home country on April 21 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry for sales in excess of 10,000 copies. (Note: Each copy of the magazine sold in Sweden counted towards the certification.)
"Reaping Death" comes off WATAIN's fourth album, "Lawless Darkness", which entered the official chart in Sweden at position No. 26 and dropped to No. 37 the following week.
"Lawless Darkness" sold around 1,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 42 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
"Lawless Darkness" was released in Europe on June 7 in a limited three-panel digipack edition with die-cut and a cover of DEATH SS' "Chains of Death" as a bonus track.
WATAIN will embark on a European headlining tour in the fall. Support on the trek will come from DESTROYER 666.
Bassist B-Force has left Swedish black metallers DARK FUNERAL. The band's guitarist, Lord Ahriman, said in a statement, "I wish to thank [B-Force] for the six fantastic years he'd been with us on bass. It's been a pleasure indeed working together."
Commented B-Force: "After six awesome and crazy years with DARK FUNERAL, I have decided to leave the band. It's my own decision to leave one of the best band/friends in the world, but I feel that I need to move forward in life and do something else music-wise. There are absolutely NO hard feelings between me and DARK FUNERAL. We are and will continue to be good friends!
"I want to thank the band and all the fans all over the world. You kick ass everywhere I've been playing with the band. I thank you all. May the dark forces be with you."
DARK FUNERAL has already found "a new and totally amazing bassist; a bassist who lives and breathes DARK FUNERAL in its purest form," according to Lord Ahriman. "We will, however, wait until everything is settled before we present him to all of you, so please be patient."
DARK FUNERAL played its final show with vocalist Magnus "Masse" Broberg (a.k.a. Emperor Magus Caligula) on August 21, 2010 at the Summer Breeze festival in Dinkelsbühl, Germany. "Since this was a very special performance in many ways, we not only put on our biggest pyro show ever, we also captured this gig with 10 cameras (including one crane)," said Lord Ahriman. "So you can be sure to expect a DVD release from this killer show in the near future."
Broberg announced his departure from DARK FUNERAL last month, explaining that "my life has taken a new turn lately, and I am also getting married this year, whereof my priorities in life lie somewhere else." Guitarist and founding member Lord Ahriman added, "I understand when people change course and get new priorities in life. And I fully respect that. Life moves on, after all, and so will DARK FUNERAL.
"Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus", the latest album from DARK FUNERAL, was released in North America on January 26, 2010 via Regain Records. The CD, which was made available in most European countries between November 18, 2009 and November 27, 2009, was recorded at Abyss Studio in Grangärde, Sweden with famed engineer and legendary producer Peter Tägtgren (PAIN, HYPOCRISY). Nine songs are featured on the effort, which is being described in a press release as "the band's most technical and varied album to date. And while still being true to their roots, they have taken a great step forward in the evolution of their brand of fine Swedish black metal. 'Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus' is, from the very beginning to the end, a hell ride you simply don't want to miss!"
The "Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus" cover artwork was created by Morbid (Daniel Valeriani).
"Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus" was released in a couple of different formats, including a two-disc limited edition containing one CD and one live DVD. The bonus live DVD features approximately 55 minutes of previously unreleased material professionally filmed with six cameras during the band's 15th anniversary show at the Peace & Love festival on June 28, 2008 in Borlänge, Sweden. The album also includes two versions (soft and hardcore) of the band's brand new video, "My Funeral".
