Legacy Recordings has set January 24 as the domestic release date of two essential new titles from the seminal metal band SCORPIONS: "Comeblack", a new album of classic rock covers and fresh performances of signature repertoire recorded earlier this year, and "Get Your Sting And Blackout - Live in 3D", available on Blu-ray disc, an 11-camera 3-D concert film recorded in Saarbrücken, Germany on April 15, 2011 during SCORPIONS' current farewell tour.
Launched by guitarist Rudolf Schenker in 1965, SCORPIONS forged metal, rock and pop into a sound that's come to signify an entire genre through hard rock anthems like "Rock You Like A Hurricane" and hits like "Send Me An Angel", "Wind of Change" and "Still Loving You", selling more than 100 million records in the process.
Last year, SCORPIONS announced that the group's "Get Your Sting And Blackout" tour, an epic ongoing worldwide rock 'n' roll odyssey in support of 2010's "Sting In The Tail", would be the group's last before retirement. The tour is slated to run through 2012 with a string of historic farewell blowouts and festival performances scheduled Europe culminating with shows at the Wacken Open Air festival (August 4, 2012) and Munich's Olympiahalle (October 13, 2012).
Wanting to create a truly memorable concert film to do justice to power of the live show and the high energy emotional impact of the final tour, SCORPIONS chronicled the sold-out concert on April 15, 2011 in Saarbrücken, Germany with a state-of-the-art 3D production. Helmed by director Gerd F. Schultze (who's worked on 3D films with Michael Jackson, Bryan Adams, Joe Cocker, Carlos Santana and German superstar Peter Maffay), "Get Your Sting and Blackout - Live in 3D" puts the viewer into the VIP box at the ultimate SCORPIONS concert. In addition to 100 minutes of pure SCORPIONS music, "Get Your Sting And Blackout - Live In 3D" includes more than half-an-hour of behind-the-scenes bonus material.
"The preview audience was absolutely euphoric and stunned by the intensity and the never-before-witnessed power and intimacy in which they were able to experience the SCORPIONS' fantastic concert," said Gerd Schultze following a theatrical screening of the film. "The people left the screening with a completely new and never-before-seen concert experience and wanted to watch it all over straight away. Part of the reason is that we have managed to create an unbelievable 3D depth with a specially developed method, which is very pleasant to watch. Using the new camera technology, we managed to translate 3D in the cut and montage technique in a style that will meet the expectations of a first class product even in ten years time. It makes you feel like you're sitting in the VIP lounge amidst the audience through this 11 camera 3D concert staging and its monstrous 5.1 surround and stereo sound. At the same time, the SCORPIONS perform their unbelievably powerful and visually unique show with all their hits live in your living room. This is pure dynamite ... fasten seat belts and take off ... into the third dimension."
"Saarbrücken was a very good choice," wrote the band in a press statement, "our fans were simply sensational and gave us the chance to thank them for their many years of support."
At some point during the "Get Your Sting And Blackout" tour ("We can't remember the day, the month or the hour"), SCORPIONS, enjoying the success of "Sting In The Tail" and the emotional rejuvenation of the farewell tour ("Screaming fans everywhere we went!") decided to record one last classic album. "The idea to go back to the studio was born out of pure excitement," said the band who cut an album mixing covers of rock 'n' roll standards that informed and inspired the SCORPIONS alongside new productions and performances of the songs in the band's core catalog that have proved the most meaningful to the members.
The result, "Comeblack", is, according to the band, "an encore for our die-hard fans, to thank them for all the support for so many years. At the same time, this is a tribute to legendary bands from the sixties, like THE BEATLES and THE ROLLING STONES, who have inspired us to follow our dreams. We hope you like it as much as we do... Rock on and ... Comeblack."

METALLICA is one of the top-selling artists since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking album sales in May 1991, with cumulative U.S. sales of more than 53 million copies. The band's 1991 self-titled fifth album, commonly known as "the black album," in 2009 surpassed SHANIA TWAIN's 1997 record, "Come On Over", as the best-selling CD of the SoundScan era. To date, the black album has sold 15,735,000 copies, eclipsing "Come On Over"'s total of 15,513,000.
The Nielsen SoundScan system began compiling sales electronically more than 19 years ago on a weekly basis, providing more accurate sales figures that form the basis for the Billboard music charts.
Although METALLICA had scored their first radio and video airplay with their previous effort, 1988's "...And Justice For All", the black album was the band's biggest commercial breakthrough, producing five singles and making them into one of the most popular rock bands in the world.

METALLICA's self-titled fifth album came out 20 years ago this past August and Gibson.com celebrated by compiling a number of quotes from the band members and others into a brief oral history of the project. According to The Pulse Of Radio, the record made METALLICA into superstars after being cult metal heroes for the first eight years of their career, even as it found the band slowing down and abandoning its thrash metal beginnings for a more mainstream, yet still heavy, style.
Drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone in 1991 about the record's musical shift, "We felt inadequate as musicians and as songwriters (early in our career). That made us go too far, around 'Master Of Puppets' and on '...And Justice For All', in the direction of trying to prove ourselves. We'll do all this weird-ass shit sideways to prove that we are capable musicians and songwriters."
Ulrich added about the eight months it took to make the album, "[Recording] should have gone quicker, in theory, than trying to get everything note-perfect like we have before. But as usual with METALLICA, all those theories and normalities go straight out the window. It took us twice as long to make a record that is twice as loose."
Frontman James Hetfield said, "It was [once] a challenge for us to jam every riff in the universe into one song and make it work. Now we're pretty much doing the opposite. Which is even more of a challenge."
The album was the first of four collaborations with producer Bob Rock, with whom the band clashed throughout the recording of the disc. Rock recalled to Music Radar, "The first three months were difficult. They were all very suspicious of me. It wasn't a fun, easy record to make. I told the guys when we were done that I'd never work with them again. They felt the same way about me."
Ulrich said about Rock in NME, "We'd never really had anybody push us before . . . We've always thought of ourselves as 'Big Bad Metallica,' but Bob taught us a new word none of us had ever heard before: soulful."
METALLICA will perform "the black album" in its entirety at a number of European festivals this summer.

Tom Cruise stars in the upcoming film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical "Rock Of Ages", which showcases popular rock songs from the '70s and '80s. The actor stars as Stacee Jaxx, an aging musician whose glory days are long past. Among the tunes Cruise will perform are DEF LEPPARD's "Pour Some Sugar On Me", SCORPIONS' "Rock You Like A Hurricane", BON JOVI's "Wanted Dead Or Alive" and STYX's "Renegade".
DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen recently told AOL's Noisecreep that he and his bandmates got to meet Cruise and that the actor "did a great job. He's doing my vocal part, Joe's [Elliott] part — all of them! This is someone who has never sung before. He was doing that thing that a lot of method actors do when they take on a role. They get into character completely. He told us he was taking five hours a day, five days a week, for four to five months, just to get the vocal aspect of the role down. That was fantastic to hear."
He added, "I was really pleased with how down-to-earth Tom was. He was very humble and actually told us how he thought 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' was an absolute classic. He said it deserved all of the respect and attention he can give it. So we were definitely honored.
"I had the chance to catch the Broadway version of the ['Rock Of Ages'] musical and it was a lot of fun. It's campy and kitschy, and it captures that time period so well. It's not like a 'Spinal Tap' kind of thing where they're making fun of it, but they do have some fun with it. It has a 'Glee' and 'High School Musical' feel, but set on the Sunset Strip. I guess you can say it's like 'West Side Story' done with songs from the '80s."
It was previously reported that Cruise was preparing for his role by training with Axl Rose's vocal coach. "He's been studying with — seriously — Axl Rose's voice teacher like five hours a day," director Adam Shankman told The Wrap in April of last year. "The prognosis is more than excellent."
The movie is a love story told through the music of PAT BENATAR, BON JOVI, JOURNEY, POISON, TWISTED SISTER and other artists from the 1980s.
"Rock Of Ages" also stars Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, Malin Akerman and many others. It scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 1, 2012.

According to the web site of the Swiss multimedia shop CeDe, VAN HALEN has set "A Different Kind Of Truth" as the title of its new album, which is widely believed to be arriving on February 7.
VAN HALEN will play its first live show since 2008 this Thursday night (January 5) at the tiny Cafe Wha? nightclub in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, according to Rolling Stone. The show at the 250-person venue will be the band's first since it ended its hugely successful 2007/2008 reunion trek with original singer David Lee Roth. The gig will also likely serve to officially kick off the promotional campaign for the new VAN HALEN CD.
Sources said that the group will perform a 45-minute set on Thursday night, although it is not known whether they will debut any new material.
The band has been rehearsing at the Roxy nightclub in Los Angeles for the past two months to prepare for an upcoming world tour, releasing video footage shot at the club over the holidays.
The tour is now scheduled to begin in February in Louisville, Kentucky, with complete dates and venues expected to be announced tomorrow (Friday, January 6). Tickets for the jaunt will go on sale January 10, when the album's first single, reported by the Van Halen News Desk to be called "Tattoo", is also expected to drop.
An image featuring a train and the VAN HALEN logo, along with the February 7 date, was posted online and then flashed on the Times Square electronic billboard on New Year's Eve (December 31). There is speculation that the image could be the album's cover art.
The set will be the group's first all-new collection since "Van Halen 3" was issued 13 years ago, and its first with Roth since 1984.

A photo of the giant billboard situatued high above Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California and advertising MÖTLEY CRÜE's upcoming Las Vegas shows can be seen below.
MÖTLEY CRÜE has become the first hard rock band to sign a short-term residency at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
The CRÜE will play a three-week series of four-night concerts a week at the off-Strip casino starting on February 3 and running through February 19.
2012's Mötley Crüe In Sin City show is sure to leave the loud impression that what happens in Vegas will be heard around the world. Vocalist Vince Neil, guitarist Mick Mars, bassist Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee have big plans for Mötley Crüe In Sin City to create a never-been-done-before and incredibly interactive Vegas experience. Exact details about the show — expected to supersede the band's high standard of production — are being kept under wraps for now to keep an element of surprise for fans. The engagement falls during a holiday-packed time in the calendar year: Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine's Day and President's Day.
Said Vince Neil: "We're the first hard rock band ever to have a residency [in Las Vegas]. There's been bands like SANTANA and ELTON JOHN and these kinds of acts, but for us… MÖTLEY CRÜE, we're all about theater and about over-the-top stage show, so it's a perfect fit for us. So we're really, really excited."
"It's not a traditional concert," Neil said in a recent teleconference with journalists. "There's going to be stuff around the whole venue that's going to come up behind you, the side of you, above you and below you. This is a whole different thing."
Added Tommy Lee, "When you think of The Joint, you see the stage and there's the chairs, and we're really going to change the appearance of that and perform from different areas. We really want the audience to be in the show, not watching the show."
He continued, "We've gone to a lot of the big Vegas shows, and we've all talked about it many times, going, 'Could you imagine if we could only get our hands on this kind of opportunity? What we could with it?' This has been something that we've talked about for a long time."
Neil said that if the run of shows is a success, the CRÜE could return for more dates in the future.
"We are very excited to announce our upcoming partnership with legendary rockers MÖTLEY CRÜE," said Paul Davis, vice president of entertainment at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. "The one-of-a-kind production will be the most unique, interactive, fan-driven concert experience the band has ever created. MÖTLEY CRÜE is a perfect fit for the Hard Rock and we can't wait for this unforgettable residency to begin!"
Added Bobby Reynolds, Vice President of Booking for AEG Live Las Vegas, "We're thrilled that MÖTLEY CRÜE is creating their most notorious show ever and bringing it to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in notorious Las Vegas. This concert experience is going to represent what the fans love most about MÖTLEY CRÜE, the Hard Rock and Las Vegas: good times, rock n' roll and a stage show like no one has ever seen before!"
"I think it'd be nice for it to be as long as possible," he said. "It's easy on everybody, and the production part of it is just going to be so much more fun than the stuff that we have to haul around and build and tear down every single night (on tour). There's much cooler stuff that we can do. I'd hate for it to go by quick."

"Beyond Hell/Above Heaven", the latest album from Danish metal rock 'n' rollers VOLBEAT, was certified platinum by the Bundesverband Musikindustrie (BVMI) (The Federal Association of Music Industry) for sales in excess of 200,000 copies in Germany.
Commented the band: "Together we made it happen. That was something we didn't dare to dream of to begin with. It's tough to sell records nowadays, but your support and dedication proved that it's possible and you cared enough to bring our album into your collection. That's something we are very proud of, and we want to thank you so much for your VOLBEAT support. Can't wait to see you all again and bring you some new VOLBEAT songs. Together we make it stronger than ever."
In an interview with Soundspike, VOLBEAT guitarist/vocalist Michael Poulsen stated about "Beyond Hell/Above Heaven", "It's our new release and style-wise we're doing pretty much the same as we did on the three previous albums, flirting around with a lot of different styles. It's not easy to say what kind of style VOLBEAT actually is. You have so many different elements from punk and metal and rockabilly and country. For us, it's never been important to be 100 percent one genre or one style."
When asked about how VOLBEAT came up with its unique sound — which has been described as a cross between METALLICA and ELVIS PRESLEY — Poulsen said, "Mostly my parents would play all music from the '50s. We were listening to Elvis, Johnny Cash, Fats Domino and Chuck Berry and Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, all the legendary singers from the '50s. They were listening to them all the time. All those kind of melodies, they were always spinning in my head. Even though as a teenager I was really dedicated and hooked on heavy metal, it seems like later on all the melodies form the '50s continually showed up in my mind. So, it was very natural to mix it all up."
VOLBEAT has tapped Hank Shermann of MERCYFUL FATE to play guitar on its upcoming North American tour as part of "Gigantour".
Shermann most recently shared the stage with METALLICA at one of four intimate shows which took place at the Fillmore in San Francisco as part of the week-long celebration of METALLICA's 30th anniversary as a band for fan club members only.
VOLBEAT last year parted ways with guitarist Thomas Bredahl, who had been a member of the band since 2006.
VOLBEAT has released "Live From Beyond Hell/Above Heaven" via Vertigo/Universal on double DVD, Blu-ray, limited double DVD + audio CD, CD, digital download and VOD. The set includes footage from VOLBEAT's sold-out show in front of 10,000 fervent fans at the Forum in Copenhagen, to the House of Blues in Anaheim, California and the Rock Am Ring show in Germany. It's VOLBEAT conquering performance territory Stateside and across Europe, showing fans that the band is just as comfortable, charged and throttled in front of an audience as intimate as 1,100 or as vast as 80,000.

SOULFLY has tapped Thomas Mignone (MEGADETH, SEPULTURA, DANZIG) of Doom Incorporated to direct the video for the band's new song "World Scum". The track comes off the band's eighth album, "Enslaved", which is due on March 13 via Roadrunner Records. The CD was recorded at Tallcat Studios in Phoenix, Arizona and was produced by Chris "Zeuss" Harris, the seasoned knob twiddler behind some of the most notable bands in metal today, such as SHADOWS FALL, HATEBREED, THE RED CHORD and more. SOULFLY vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera also shared production duties.
SOULFLY's current lineup features Max and guitar dynamo Marc Rizzo, with STATIC-X's Tony Campos taking up the bass. The lineup is rounded out by drummer David Kinkade (BORKNAGAR, ARSIS, MALEVOLENT CREATION), a new-school, extreme skinsman whose brutality behind the kit brings a new flavor to the band.
While many groups barely make it to a third album, SOULFLY is still going strong two decades deep. 2012 also marks the band's 15th anniversary of making a tribally-influenced metallic racket and what better way to celebrate than with a new record? The album will be released via longtime label Roadrunner, which has been SOULFLY's home for the course of its career. The label has also been Cavalera's home for the duration of his career, which began in the '80s as a member of SEPULTURA, who essentially rewrote the rules of heavy music when they arrived on the scene; Max continues to do the same today.
As is customary with SOULFLY, the band will introduce some new and unexpected elements into the mix, including a guest violinist. SOULFLY also collaborates with two metal veterans: Dez Fafara of DEVILDRIVER and Travis Ryan of CATTLE DECAPITATION. With Dez and Max sharing a longtime connection through the Roadrunner family, it was only a matter of time before Fafara guested on a SOULFLY album.
Cavalera wrote a song, "Revengeance", about his slain stepson Dana Wells, whose death was the catalyst for the creation of SOULFLY. He partners with his sons Igor and Richie on vocals, while his other son Zyon plays drums. It is the first time Max has performed with three of his sons.
The band tracked 14 songs, 11 of which will be on the record, with the other three being made available for the special edition.
Track titles are as follows:
* Resistance
* World Scum
* Intervention
* Gladiator
* Legions
* American Steel
* Redemption Of Man By God
* Treachery
* Plata O Plomo
* Revengeance
* Chains
* Slave
* Bastards
* Soulfly VIII
Travis Ryan — who was a replacement for SOULFLY's original choice, OCEANO's Adam Warren — recorded his portion of the vocals at Frick'in Studios in San Marcos, California with engineer Dan Frick.
Commented Ryan: "It's an honor to receive a call from someone you had pictures of on your wall as a kid asking you to be on a new album of theirs. I literally had a picture of Max [Cavalera, SOULFLY mainman] and Gloria [Max's wife and manager] holding [Gloria's son] Richie in her arms that I ripped out of a copy of Metal Maniacs on my wall when I was 15 or 16. Now they're asking for my artistic hand in one of their creations; [it] just doesn't get much more surreal than that. Very honored and the song is very 'death metal-ish' and completely crushes. Happy to be a part of it!"
Zeuss stated about Travis' contribution, "The vocals fucking rule!!!! Fits the song perfect… Very refreshing for me to hear these days."
As previously reported, Max Cavalera will take part in a video chat on January 15.
For more information, send an email to mramireztribe@gmail.com and you'll be contacted one hour before the chat is scheduled to take place.

According to The Pulse Of Radio, SALIVA quietly parted ways with singer Josey Scott late last year, with guitarist Wayne Swinny telling Lubbock, Texas radio stations KFMX that Scott left the group after a decade and a half to pursue a career as a solo Christian artist. Although SALIVA's continued existence seemed to be in doubt as 2011 drew to a close, Swinny has revealed that he and the remaining members of SALIVA have recruited Jacksonville, Florida singer/songwriter Bobby Amaru to take over on the mic.
The group has already recorded three new songs which it will begin shopping around for a new record deal.
Amaru fronted his own solo band and played drums for BURN SEASON.
A tour is also in the works for February to introduce fans to the new lineup. It does not seem likely that the band will change its name.
Scott was a founding member of SALIVA, which formed in Memphis in 1996. He sang lead vocals on all seven of the band's albums to date, with the most recent being 2010's "Under Your Skin". The group has compiled 18 rock radio hits.

Regarding the "Requiem For The Indifferent" album title, the band previously said, "This title refers to the end of an era. Mankind can no longer stick their head in the sand for the things that are happening around us. We are facing many challenges. There is an enormous tension between different religions and cultures, wars, natural disasters and a huge financial crisis, which is getting out of control. More than ever we will need each other to overcome these problems. As we are all connected; the universe, earth, nature, animals and human beings, this period in time will be the prelude to the end for those who still don't want to, or simply won't see it. 'A Requiem For The Indifferent', but also a possibility for a new beginning with great new chances!"
A CD-release party for the new EPICA album will be held on March 16 at 013 in Tilburg, Netherlands.

The Signature #4 Jim Root Terror Head is modelled after the dirty channel on the same amp that Jim Root (SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR) plays in the studio and on the road: the Orange Rockerverb 100. This all-tube, 15-watt amp is capable of far more than high gain rock and metal though. With a full 3-band EQ players will find it easy to dial in everything from vintage rock, blues and beyond. The addition of a tube-driven FX loop allows the user to take the tone in any direction they want.
His new Signature #4 Jim Root PPC212 cab has been developed alongside the head to bring you Jim's full tone! The new cab is finished in black vinyl with a specially developed black version of the Orange basket grill cloth and proudly features the signature #4 plate on the front. With a closed back design, the cab has a tight bottom end and delivers Jim's signature Orange tone.
Said Jim of the name on the signature head, "With this amp, simply giving it the number I use in SLIPKNOT seemed logical. I've not been to apt to splash either band logo or artwork all over things, but this will be the beginning of the end of that… maybe."
To complement Jim's own style and image, the Signature #4 Terror Head is formidable and attention grabbing, featuring the vintage "Pics Only" logo in white on a black chassis. The rear of the amp has both the SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR logos.

This is a simply essential tool for any guitarist from any playing background. Quality built for the huge sound, lush tones and high gain necessary for rock and metal music, but versatile enough to be useful in any situation!
Jim Root will be personally launching his signature #4 products on the Orange Booth #4890 Hall C at NAMM at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 21.

The EP is now available for streaming in its entirety using the player below.
ADRENALINE MOB's first-ever headline tour made stops in various markets, including Chicago, Denver and San Francisco. ADRENALINE MOB also opened for GODSMACK on select dates of the Massachusetts act's headlining tour.
ADRENALINE MOB formed in early 2011 when Orlando approached Allen with some material the guitarist had written. Allen and Orlando refined those ideas, at which time Allen reached out to longtime friend Portnoy to see if he had any interest in playing with them. Portnoy jumped on board and soon thereafter DiLeo and Ward were recruited to join the family. From the very first note, the chemistry was apparent and the beast that is known as ADRENALINE MOB was born.

The OhioProg 2012 three-day progressive rock festival — which was scheduled to take place September 7-9, 2012 at the Canton Palace Theatre in Canton, Ohio — has been canceled.
Commented the organizers: "OhioProg 2012 turned to crowd funding platform to make tickets available for the three-day progressive rock festival in an attempt to ensure enough people would attend to cover the costs and expenses of holding such a grand event. The Kickstarter campaign ended on January 2, 2012 with only 60 tickets pledged. A total of around 400-450 tickets pledged at the various levels would have reached the funding goal.
"The festival adopted Kickstarter's project criteria in that, it is all-or-nothing funding. So, since the goal was not reached OhioProg 2012 has been canceled. Also, because funding on Kickstarter is all or nothing, all pledges have been automatically canceled.
"We thank the many that did pledge and committed to attending the festival. The support meant a lot. We'd also like to thank those at the Canton Palace Theatre and those in the Canton area who have been very gracious to our staff and efforts. And, of course, all of the bands who were invited to perform at OhioProg 2012, we thank you for believing in our event!
"To join the OhioProg mailing list to be notified of future related events, please visit the OhioProg web site at www.ohioprog.com."
OhioProg 2012 was slated to include a Friday pre-show, "A Tribute To The Classics," and a Saturday and Sunday full-day main event featuring eleven bands spanning five countries. Scheduled performers included FM, GLASS HAMMER, NIGHTINGALE, ARENA, PERSEPHONE'S DREAM, ORPHAN PROJECT, AFTER THE FALL, CRYPTIC VISION and KINETIC ELEMENT.

Jeremy Wallach, an anthropologist and associate professor in the Bowling Green State University department of popular culture who has served as a consultant on the Sam Dunn films "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" and "Global Metal", has penned a 400-page essay collection entitled "Metal Rules The Globe: Heavy Metal Music Around The World" which explores the identity and meaning behind heavy metal scenes that thrive in cultures around the world.
Wallach and co-author Paul D. Greene will be at The Spiral Bookcase (112 Cotton St.) in Philadelphia Pennsylvania on Thursday, January 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a signing and discussion.
"Metal is an indicator of democratization," Wallach tells Newsworks.org. "The thing that precipitated this country's transition to democracy was heavy metal. Christians and Muslims play in bands together in Indonesia and it's not a big deal."
When asked what heavy metal means in the big picture, Wallach says, "The main argument is that heavy metal is used by musicians and fans as a way to negotiate the dislocations brought about by modernity. It's a way to assert the freedom of the individual without falling into consumerism, but also not falling into the reactionary return of tradition."
Excerpt from the "Metal Rules The Globe" introduction: "Frequently misunderstood and maligned in its countries of origin, heavy metal music has in the last four decades become a potent source of meaning and identity for young and no-longer-so-young people across the planet. These fans have stayed loyal to the music despite societal disapproval, occasional moral panics, censorship, and even government harassment and violence. 'Metal Rules The Globe' is the first academic book to explore the broad swath of metal's worldwide growth and examine why this often devalued, censored, and ridiculed music genre has attracted so many devoted fans in far-flung locales."

Michigan thrash squadron NOCTURNAL FEAR has set "Sadistic Inquisition" as the title of its new sixth studio album, slated for release later this year through Moribund Records. Songtitles set to appear on the CD, which will feature the same band lineup as on last year's critically acclaimed "Excessive Cruelty", include "Invincible Warlord", "Seal Team 666", "Bite The Curb", "Code Name - Trinity", "Blood On The Battle Field", "Cold As Death (Life Of Crime)" and "Invade To Conquer Pt. 2".
NOCTURNAL FEAR guitarist/songwriter Rev. Chris Slavehunter PhD promises that the "Sadistic Inquisition" will be "our heaviest, fastest, and most militant release yet! It will be a surge in which we will burn all bridges behind us, further distancing ourselves in a bid for isolation as America's War Metal Assassins — indeed, WAR METAL SKINHEADS! This ain't Blasphemy, this ain't Revenge, and this ain't Canada. This is NOCTURNAL FEAR, this is Detroit, and THIS IS THE REAL SHIT! Reviewers won't be happy, but true fucking bangers who want their faces ripped off and fed to our PACK OF ROTTWEILERS won't be let down."

BLOOD REDSKIES, the Texas-based power metallers featuring former VICIOUS RUMORS singer Ronnie Stixx, have inked a deal with Pure Steel Records. The band's debut album, "Conquistador", is tentatively due in late March. A European tour will follow the CD release.
BLOOD REDSKIES recently announced the addition of guitarist Dave Watson (ex-DEATHRIDERS, MOTHER MERCY, RESISTANCE) and bassist Sandy K. Vasquez (ex-DEATHRIDERS, BLOOD LUST, LAST RITES) to the group's ranks.
Commented Stixx: "As the BLOOD REDSKIES demo, 'Breaking The Spell', continues to be well received and the debut album being tracked, I felt that having both Dave and Sandy in BLOOD REDSKIES would be a perfect fit for the band, with Sandy's playing intensity and showmanship on bass, as well as Dave's killer playing. I feel that BLOOD REDSKIES can finally press forward with a killer record and great live performances."
BLOOD REDSKIES' music is described in the band's official bio as "a great blend of European and U.S. power metal, with catchy riffs [and] strong vocal melodies . . . in the vein of DIO, TNT, HALFORD, SAXON and PRIMAL FEAR."

Chicago's DIRGE WITHIN has finished recording its sophomore full-length album at Mercenary Studios in Zion, Illinois with engineer Scott Creekmore and producer Ari Mihalopoulos for an April 10 release via Rocket Science Ventures/THC: Music. The 11-song CD is currently being mixed at Inner Light Studios with Ari and DIRGE WITHIN guitarist Shaun Glass.
Guitarist Matt Szlachta recently left DIRGE WITHIN to continue to focus on his passion for teaching guitar to his students and for other personal reasons. He has since been replaced by Chuck Wepfer.
"There's no bad blood at all, man," said vocalist Jeremy "Jerms" Genske. "We're all still good buds and very close. His head and heart just weren't in it anymore, and he wanted to go back to teaching. He really loves it, and that's where he felt he had to be."

Drummer Antony "Antton" Lant has quit M-PIRE OF EVIL (formerly PRIMEVIL) — the band he formed in 2010 with fellow ex-VENOM members Jeff "Mantas" Dunn (guitar) and Tony "The Demolition Man" Dolan (bass, vocals). Antton, who is the brother of VENOM frontman Conrad "Cronos" Lant, tells BLABBERMOUTH.NET, "[It is] a new year and a time to get my priorities right and everything in order. Too much stuff. As from today, I will NO LONGER be playing drums in M-PIRE OF EVIL. My family life and DEF-CON-ONE are more important to me. And something's got to give."
M-PIRE OF EVIL released its debut mini-album, "Creatures Of The Black", on October 21 via Scarlet Records. The CD features cover versions of four songs that influenced the members of M-PIRE OF EVIL ("Exciter" by JUDAS PRIEST, "God Of Thunder" by KISS, "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be" by AC/DC and "Motörhead" by MOTÖRHEAD), plus two new songs, "Hellspawn" and "Reptile", which are available for streaming on the group's Facebook page.
In a 2010 interview with Metality, Dolan stated about the formation of M-PIRE OF EVIL,"Well, I think it came about as Mantas and Antton who were both doing separate music projects (DRYLL and DEF-CON-ONE) came together in DRYLL. Mantas needed a drummer and Antton offered his services. People kept wondering what it would be like if Mantas and Antton played with me and it was kind of, 'Oh, yeah that would be fun perhaps,' but then DRYLL played a show and performed the VENOM track 'Black Metal' [with Antton] and that was kind of it. People started saying I had to come in and play, too. So I got a phone call and had a few chats with Mantas and that was that; we decided we'd see if it worked. It does, very well, but then again myself and Mantas have always been friends and played well together. The addition of a drummer as good as Antton was something too cool to pass up! [M-PIRE OF EVIL] is old school, I guess, melodic, heavy, powerful. [As to how MPIRE OF EVIL is] different from VENOM, [I'm] not sure. We will inevitably be compared, as we are all ex-VENOM [members] and, of course, Mantas was the main songwriter for VENOM, so... But I feel we are more like classic metal. MOTÖRHEAD, BLACK SABBATH.... PRIEST and VENOM."
DIRGE WITHIN's forthcoming album will be the band's first to feature drummer Frankie Harchut and bassist Jeff Paulick (bassist/vocalist of LAZARUS A.D.), who has been filling on bass duties on tour with DIRGE WITHIN.
"I am very excited about the new songs we've written for this new album, and that people will be able to check out my style of playing a little more," stated Harchut. "We worked our asses off writing these new songs, a lot of long nights, and I'm personally stoked to have our fans hear 'em. I really think they're gonna be into it." Jeremy added, "The songs are heavier, smarter, and more melodic in parts. Some are even a little slower! There were no rules when we were writing at all. No holds barred. Whatever came out, came out. And I think it's gonna make a really good, well-rounded metal album."
DIRGE WITHIN's "Absolution" EP was made available on August 16, 2011. The three-song effort gives fans a taste of what's to come from the band's forthcoming sophomore album.
DIRGE WITHIN's debut album, "Force Fed Lies", came out on September 1, 2009 via E1 Music.

The announcement was made today by Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) president Dr. Aida Takia-O'Reilly and Dick Clark Productions (DCP) Executive Vice President, Television, Barry Adelman. The 69th snnual Golden Globe Awards airs internationally in more than 190 countries (please check local listings) and on Sunday, January 15 in the U.S. coast-to-coast on NBC with the pre-show from 4:00 p.m. PST to 5:00 p.m. PST, and main telecast from 5:00 p.m. PST to 8:00 p.m. PST, hosted by Ricky Gervais from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
"Yoshiki is a world-renowned musician and composer of enormous talent and versatility, who in addition to being a rock superstar, has composed for film and television," said Takia-O'Reilly. "As an international organization dedicated to creative achievements, the HFPA is delighted to have a global musical artist of Yoshiki's stature create the theme for the show."
Added Adelman, "We look forward to incorporating Yoshiki's music into the production of the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards."
"The Golden Globe Awards are extremely prestigious, but the show is also edgy," said Yoshiki, who attended the awards presentation for the first time last year. "I'm a classical pianist and a rock drummer, so it was natural to create something beautiful that also has an edge."

LAMB OF GOD frontman Randy Blythe will perform with CANNABIS CORPSE at the upcoming Cory Smoot (GWAR) memorial concert, set to take place on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at The Canal Club in Richmond, Virginia.
Blythe's appearance with CANNABIS CORPSE will be a one-off event following the recent departures of the band's vocalist Andy "Weedgrinder" Horn and guitarist Nick "Nikropolis" Poulos.
Commented Blythe: "Cory was the guitarist in GWAR who passed away recently and was a friend of mine who recorded my guest vocals on the JASTA CD. He leaves a pregnant wife behind (their first child) and a mortgage.
"Cory didn't have life insurance and his wife is going to need every penny she can get with a kid on the way and bills to pay.
"Although GWAR is a relatively large band and are doing all they can for Mrs. Smoot, the fact of the matter nobody is rich and times will be hard.
"My friends in CANNABIS CORPSE were scheduled to play the benefit show, but suddenly are having lineup difficulties (lost the singer). So what the fuck and why not?
"On January 7, CANNABIS CORPSE WILL play — but I will be singing!
"Come check out some brutal death metal for a good cause! I'll be working on my death metal voice 'till then, pretending to smoke weed and getting deeper than fuck.
"I'm quite confident I can properly do the CANNABIS CORPSE tunes justice AND add something new. Now I need a 'weed metal' name!"
A four-and-a-half-minute video clip of Blythe rehearsing with CANNABIS CORPSE for this weekend's concert can be seen below.
Smoot, a.k.a. Flattus Maximus, was found dead as GWAR was about to enter Canada on November 3. He was 34 years old.
CANNABIS CORPSE is currently seeking replacements for Horn and Poulos. Interested parties can contact the group at Landphilbass@hotmail.com.

Legendary San Francisco Bay Area gore grind act AUTOPSY will make its exclusive Midwest appearance — the band's first show in Chicago since 1993 — on Saturday, March 5 at Reggie' Rock Club (2105 South State St., Chicago, IL). Also schedule to appear are BONES, the new group featuring former members of USURPER.
For more information, go to this location.
AUTOPSY's new collection, "All Tomorrow's Funerals", will be released on February 28 via Peaceville Records. This monstrous 22-track effort will contain all of AUTOPSY's EPs remastered by the bandmembers themselves, as well as new cuts. Everything from "Retribution For The Dead" to the now-sold-out "The Tomb Within" will be presented on CD and DLP with all original artworks, liner notes from the band and new cover art from renowned artist Matt Cavotta.
Commented the band: "Well, we've finished recording a few new tracks for the upcoming collection album, 'All Tomorrow's Funerals', and they came out brutal and heavy as hell. Along with the newly written songs, we did a revamped version of 'Mauled To Death', which is the very last of the old songs that needed a proper album quality recording. This album will also contain all four EPs, all of which are out of print, as well as a compilation track from 1991, so the grand total is 22 tracks. It's something we've wanted to do for quite awhile, getting all the loose chunks together in one place rather than having them split up and added on as bonus tracks here and there. Everything has been painstakingly remastered with the band's guidance and sounds better and more crushing than ever. And don't worry, we didn't get carried away and ruin anything! Combine all that with killer new cover art from Matt Cavotta and we've got one hell of release in the works.
"We are now working on all new material for the next album, due out late 2012/early 2013 and we can definitely promise more of what you would expect from AUTOPSY. There will be no compromise and no holding back.
"If you want 100% pure death metal brutality, you will certainly get it."
"Macabre Eternal", the first full-length album from AUTOPSY since 1995's "Shitfun", sold around 600 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 67 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
"Macabre Eternal" was recorded at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California and includes AUTOPSY's first 10-plus minute song "Sadistic Gratification".
AUTOPSY had previously decided to make an official comeback after working together on two songs for the special 20th-anniversary edition of debut album, "Severed Survival", in late 2008; the band having originally split before the release of its fourth album, "Shitfun", in 1995. A five-song EP, "The Tomb Within", came out last September and saw the original trio of Chris Reifert, Danny Coralles and Eric Cutler joined on bass by Joe Trevisano (ex-ABSCESS).

Finnish melodic death metallers ETERNAL TEARS OF SORROW have issued the following update:
"The year 2011 was intriguing for us. We recorded the first half of the forthcoming album. If everything had gone as planned, we would have had our seventh album almost finished by now. However, due to some unfortunate incidents, the second recording session has been rescheduled to next spring. But anyway, 2012 is going to be an exciting year for us — and we're probably going to have some exciting news [this] year!"
"Summon The Wild", the latest video from ETERNAL TEARS OF SORROW, can be viewed below. The performance footage for the clip — which was directed, filmed and edited by Anssi Lautjärvi — was filmed at S-Osis in Turku, Finland on October 16, 2009.
"Summon The Wild" comes off ETERNAL TEARS OF SORROW's sixth album, "Children Of The Dark Waters", which entered the official chart in the group's home country at position No. 19.
"Children Of The Dark Waters" was released in Finland on May 27, 2009 via Suomen Musiikki. As was the case with the band's previous five LPs, the effort was recorded at Tico-Tico Studio in Kemi, Finland. The CD was released in the rest of Europe via Massacre Records and in Asia through Marquee/Avalon.
