Good on ya Gary!
I'm not a snob when it comes to the way anybody listens to their music. After all its the music that counts.
I do recall my first time in a real studio, and quizzing the instructor about the equipment that we were about to muck with. The console was a wee bit intimidating at first, but once you got the hang of it, it was just a very cool tool to play with and adjust the music. Especially during mixdown sessions.
The biggest surprise to me were the studio monitors. I was expecting extremely grand sounding units, but instead they were very flat sounding. I was aware that the purists in the world hated the thought of 'extra' anything (bass, treble, etc) messing with the music. That and the cheap set of car speakers as one of the alternate choices to listen to the playback through. As I learned, many people were only listening to the music in their cars at the time (1980ish).
