I'm not one to dismiss the mp3 as a bad format. 99% of the folks couldn't tell the difference if I put a blindfold on them.

while this is true, it depends on the file and the way its created. From personal experience mixing my own music, when you crunch a huge file down to mp3, the compression involved can do very weird things to the mix... suddenly something becomes louder, like the hi hat, or something gets inexplicably buried.
It can get weird. If I mix down to a lossless format, like pure .wav file, of course they're huge, but, it sounds identical to the mother track.
