is there a string player in the house?!
my suspicion is that wood, being porous, is going to hold onto the rosin for a while, compared to the horsehair or nylon or such in a bow. the rosin in my twirling "lion's roar" toys has lasted for years -- it's a bit brittle, and cracks and splinters if hit against something, but the "playing" doesn't seem to wear it at all. but we're beyond my real expertise or experience.... anyone?
of course, the most reliable repeatable mechanism would probably be a piezo-electric trigger and a sampled creak. not as much fun, mind you, and almost certainly more expensive unless you already have a sample playback system in place. mind you, with (for example) an old laptop and a used drum pad/trigger interface off of e-bay and some home-made triggers, you could probably add a bunch of effects to your project...
