Subject: [Classic_Rock_Forever] It Struck Me Last Night....
...no, I wasn't in net and taking a puck to the forehead.
I was watching the Juno Awards last night. This was the 40th anniversary of the event, so they brought out alot of retrospective segments. A reasonable amount of old faces were present, some accepting awards, some giving them. I watched as some of these guys and gals spoke about the old days, and about whats going on these days and I noticed something rather obvious...man some of these folks are getting old.
That seems pretty obvious, but it struck me that these tributes are being done to live people, while if the powers that be had decided to wait for the 50th anniversary, some of these artists might not be around, or perhaps in no shape to show up.
Neil Young was there and picked up a humanitarian award for his work with the Bridge School, and Farm Aid. He also got one for best adult contemporary record with 'Le Noise'. He was well spoken, in his style, still saying and doing whatever the heck he felt like.
Some of the others that showed and spoke were Robbie Robertston, Buffy St. Marie, Randy Bachman, Daniel Lanois, Anne Murray etc. There were some younger artists in the legacy league, Shania Twain, Sarah McGlaughlin, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson....
For the first time in a long time, I watched the newer groups with more interest. For the first time I saw Arcade Fire in a new light. They played a rather cool song with a helluvan assortment of instruments. Everyone in that band has a role, violins, cello's, guitars, vocals, you name. I was happy to see a new group that had a passion and a song to play. Broken Social Scene was just fine, Down With Webster may have been my favourite of the evening. Johnny Reid is a name I'd heard but never tried. Chromeo was fun, as was Hedley.
So in the end, the only thing that struck me is that these old favourites are getting old.....and I guess that means I'm getting old too ;)
