quite true, however, both bands (Ramones and Clash) fit the category of punk, as I described it earlier, in my own musical parameters for a "label".

altho the Clash did deviate from the formula fairly often, which is how they got on the radio more often than the Ramones

There was a style to Punk and it still exists.

My question would be a group like the Clash. Huge group, very popular and I'll say I liked them at their peak. For me to listen to them, it still sounded closer to Reggae than what I was thinking of as the definitive Punk music. Even the Ramones, sounded liked a hopped up Beach Boys in many instances. They had lots of the fast and furious tunes, in the style you describe, but quite tame when I liken it to a group like the Sex Pistols.

btw, I'd take the Ramones over the SP's any day.

Sure, labelling was a marketing ploy, but, we all apply our own labels.

to me, "punk" is labelled by serious million-times-a-minute downstroking guitar powerchords and everybody follows the snare, theres no swing whatsoever, its just a fury, usually accompanied by screamed lyrics

this label could apply to all kinds of things, Led Zeppelins Communication Breakdown for example, which was in turn probably ripped off from Eddie Cochrans "Nervous Breakdown" which MIGHT even fall into the punk category I described.

Disco gets described by me, as a rhythm/drum style and there are two styles: the first is the obvious one, a big BOOM BOOM BOOM on EVERY count, this is prevalent today in techno/electronica, and to me, its still disco. Theres another beat often used in disco, harder to describe, its more of a slant with the hihat and a softly detuned snare.. you can hear it all over rock records in the later 70s as they tried to "sound more disco friendly", Fleetwood Mac Rumours, Heart Straight On For You, lots of the Abba stuff, its everywhere, but as soon as I hear that rhythm and that drum recording style, its DISCO.

Neither are inherently bad to me, altho i really dislike the BOOM BOOM BOOM on every count, thats really monotonous and annoying

The problem was with the labels. This is Punk, this is Disco, 10%
lifestyle, 90% marketing ( in my jaded opinion ;)
